This week's chronicle is the first in a series of four that describe torture in the Empires. Its title, fittingly, is "Methods of Torture - The Amarr".
The story is a farce, a pastiche, and a fairly twisted piece altogether. It's obviously part of canon, but more importantly, it's fun and doesn't take itself too seriously. I wrote the torture stories so that they could play off one another; thus, the Amarr story is light-hearted and the upcoming Minmatar one dead serious, and the Gallente story will be extremely physical while the Caldari one will be far more cerebral.
And those of you who remember a recent post about a hamster may be distressed when you read the story and find no such animal. Instead, a furrier briefly crops up, much to its own displeasure. Do not be misled. It is a hamster.

I've thought of writing something like that. I've had bits and pieces floating in my mind, but I've been afraid to put them on paper. I believe law enforcement calls writings like that "evidence" or some such.
Gosh I wish I could get a job like yours.

How delightfully Amarrian; I await the Gallente one with breathless anticipation. FYI though, there's currently no link to this in the Backstory-Chrons section of the website, or on the front page. --- What good are actions if there's no one to tell the tale afterward?...

You know those bits and pieces floating in your mind? Write them down. Accept that they won't come to anything near what you want them to be. Repeat this process for as long as it takes. Use half of your remaining spare time to study how others did it and the other half to do anything you like.
If there's a better formula for success than this, I've not found it.

Yeah, the pic got delayed a tad. We're working on it as we speak. Until we have the picture ready, we can't put up a thumbnail for it either.
Believe me, the wait is worth it.

There weren't any torture devices described in the story, just a few excessively complicated ways to execute someone, plus the 1,000th joke about Barney the Dinosaur I've encountered. There was no rising tension in the story, nor any particular enigma -- the spy is shown some execution methods, then executed. There's no characterization. There was pretty much no story at all.
If you wanted to describe how the Amarr would torture someone, you'd be better off with a variant of Franz Kafka's The Penal Colony.

Very sick and twisted and well-written too. And rather disturbing that these thoughts roil to life in your mind...
The forest scene reminds me of the "enclosed raptors" bit from Jurassic Park--nice.
So how does one get to write for CCP anyway?

The detached banter(a mask representing civility)and the cruel barbarity at play here are morbidly juxtaposed. This is the most frightening element of the tale because it contains shards of truth. Civilization is a hoax. It's a masquerade which allows us to conceal our thirst for hot blood.

And people say I'm scary.
Originally by: Kell Atorr It makes for good narrative: [...]
What you described was your ideal torture story, which is far from the only type there is. Personally, I dislike the ones that have any sort of clever interplay between the torturer and the victim. It's a situation that's somewhat believable if the interrogation is taking place under legal, controlled circumstances such as at a police station, but the instant that real torture is introduced, all coolness and calculation on the victim's part goes right out the window. A torturer doesn't succeed because of clever misdirection; it would be an utter waste of time for him to play the victim's game. He succeeds because he is a torturer, and will continue to ply his trade until the victim is too broken to resist him.
Originally by: Kell Atorr the 10,000th weak joke about Barney the Dinosaur, then the spy is killed. There's no rising tension, no characterization, no story to speak of.
Note the mention of the word "pastiche" in my first post. It means that for this story characterization is drawn from a different well, as is the story model itself. As for Barney, that's your imagination. The reference is to carebears, and to an old quote by Oveur.
Originally by: Majaraw Awalabas Most disappointing. I kept waiting for the Amarr to pick up a white cat, stroke it and say "and here Mr. Bond, we have the table with the laser, mwahaha".
I was very tempted to give him a Slaver hound. Thank heavens good taste prevailed. *coughs*

Yeah, I don't know where this stuff comes from, either...

Nice catch. As for writing for CCP, same way as I did: Catch our attention through good submissions, and be prepared to be very patient.

Something tells me you're going to really enjoy either the Gallente or the Caldari story, depending on which way your twistedness pendulum swings.
And by the way, as this Monday falls on Jan 1 there'll undoubtedly be a couple days' delay in the publication of the next story.

Definately a nice twisted bit of writing. I kinda feel the first bits of the forest, etc. were a bit weak for torture methods, but it does have a nice build to it. I remember some of the descriptions of caldari torture methods from one of the short stories awhile back, where instead of physical torture, the caldari methods involve exploiting a pod pilot's neurological links, which makes for on the surface a more humain method of torture, but one that I would find all the more unnerving to have someone poking around in my head. ----

I have a feeling I'll be rather enjoying the Caldari one; I've always thought that screwing with someone's head was far better than anything physical. Still a very good read Abraxas, looking forward to the rest.

when I got to the 'holy star' part I was confused for a sec what exactly was happening, but then I got it, its an evil ammaran sieve!
and yea it was pretty twisted, also left me wondering how the hell the previous spy got out of that 'sin eater' machine, which seems to resemble those iron maiden medieval torture devices.
