Howdy all! I'm a brand new player, as in hours old. Post title refers to my status of looking for a new game to play. I'm fleeing horrible communities and game-play, and am looking for a new safe haven. I do not know much about Eve other than much of the game is player influenced. I'm an older gamer, retired, and will spend time and money gaming if the game is right. My question for now involves asking for suggestions on reading material and videos geared toward the new player, preferably ones that are very basic. I dropped into Eve yesterday for the first time and was really overwhelmed. I tried to play the tutorial but I don't have enough info to understand what I'm doing. I'm afraid most Eve players have a knowledge base far surpassing mine so I need basically the "How to play Eve for idiots" version. I really want to do my research and learn as much as possible before I start playing so I can grasp the reasons for doing whatever I do in Eve.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Ulysses |

Eve uni is pretty good for reading material.
YouTube videos in my opinion are the best way to learn core mechanics, as you can actually see what people are talking about.
Join a newbee friendly corp ASAP.
I wanna join up. I think I got what it takes to be a Citizen.

eveiseasy is a good channel. Go to your career agents. The agent finder is on the right side of your hud when you're docked in station. They're walk through missions that will teach the basics. From there, well, its up to you. Eve is the most rewarding, and punishing, games out there. Mind the learning cliff. |

Hello and welcome to Eve.
You'll find nothing here is really self-explanatory and there's no real easy way to learn the game. Eve is not for the faint of heart, but as a new player you have little to lose and is the best time to look around what this place has to offer. Eve is an open world, and there's no real railroad you have to follow.
The best way to move forward, is to join a corporation, as having someone teach you will make a world of difference. The type of corporation you'll want will depend on what you want to do in eve, be that screwing around with other players, blowing up other players or stealing other player's property. Or if you're absolutely out of your mind, you can become a target of one of the aforementioned activities (i.e. become a miner or go around shooting NPC pirates).
If you have something in particular in mind, I'm sure people here will be able to help you. If not, you can probably join a general newbie corporation such as the player run Eve University and go your own path later on.

The newer one is undirected and takes the form of achievements/opportunities, it can be a little confusing and is still being worked on by CCP. The older tutorial is directed and IMHO easier to work with, you can access it by hitting F12 in game and selecting show tutorial agents.

Welcome to New Eden .
Remember EvE is unlike any other game on good old Earth. You alone are the master of your fun in New Eden, everything what is in the wide boundaries of game mechanics and interaction between players is possible. We all love exploding pixel space ships, so in New Eden Killing is just a means of communication http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSxNW5dDYEY

EVE is a mostly-unrestricted, anything-goes PVP game. The developers spend quite a bit of time designing and tuning up ships that we can use for combat, and otherwise, PVE content such as voice-acted lines of quests, boss raids, etc., aren't as developed as what you can find in other games (MMO or single player).
EVE's PVP appears to be from a first person point of view: you fly your own ship, and you shoot at other people flying their own ships. However, EVE is designed as a large scale strategy game, where groups of players such as the large Alliances in the game with thousands of players each, can act like in a strategy game, basically building units (ships) and focusing their firepower during wars to actually conquer space, deploy stations, and basically build (or destroy) their own space empires.
And that's where this game excels. The rules for combat are complex, there are many ships for many roles, and if you try to play solo you will miss the majority of the game. So be social, make friends, and try to participate in the corporation and alliance wars and drama and high level strategy gameplay. |

Well, EVE is anything but that... For your ships at least!
That said, the community is nice, and tends to be a bit older and less filled with bawling four year olds than most games. I hope you like it here. |

the old tutorials got abandoned because apparently the average new player doesn't want to read that much. When I started eve I wanted to read EVERYTHING, and I think that worked out pretty well.
over all I think many parts of eve are pretty easy, the problem is there is so much noise it can be hard to quickly pick stuff up. Once you get past most of that noise, most things get much easier. For instance many ship fits go by general guidelines, and once you pick those up you can figure out a fit for nearly every ship in game. Most of my pve ships focus on damage and projection. My pvp ships want that too, but sometimes it is worth taking a trade off on one to improve the other, plus I'm usually looking at improving my HP/resists so I live longer, Sometimes this means improving buffer, other times improving my active tank. Also mobility is huge so I can position myself to get as much performance out of my ship, while at the same time taking less damage from the enemy.
the hardest part of eve is the people, but that seems more or less true for everything. In PVE getting people to organize and do their jobs, or in pvp where you still have organizational problems plus the enemy can adapt and throw something completely different at you.
For PvP I like the eve-is-easy videos https://www.youtube.com/user/eveiseasy/videos He usually discusses the fits fairly well, and shows some combat footage to show the ship in action. Many videos focus on smaller ships, and there are a few that focus on new player friendly ships.
for pve there are tons of guides and resources, for missions I use this: eve-survival.org/wikka.php?wakka=missionreports
for industry and exploration I'm not 100% sure I don't do a lot of either, and I have a pretty simple spreadsheet for industry.

Just remember that Eve-Uni actually acts and operates like a real uni. So be prepared for 1~2 hour lectures on certain game mechanics.
Some people like that while some/most players go for the learn as you go/play. Just remember that EVE is not fair in a sense that if you actually want to win you better stack your hand with as many cards as you can get.
Oh and actually talk to people. EVE gameplay at its core is boring if you have no one to talk to. So join chat channels that pique your interest or chat channels that will help you in doing what you're doing in EVE atm(hauling channel if you're a hauler, anti-gank, gank intel channels if you're a miner/hauler).

I was very confused. It wasn't what I was expecting. Not even for GD.
Then I realized I had accidentally clicked on C&P instead of MD. Everything then made sense.

Welcome to Eve.
Eve players have a much higher average age than most if not all other MMOs so you will probably fit right in.
Don't worry about feeling lost we all did at your point in the game. The game is deep and it will take you a while to get the hang of it.
Others have posted some links. You'll find a lot more on your own as well. Google and youtube will help you a lot. You'll be googling a lot of stuff in this game to the point that if you are not currently running multiple monitors you will likely want to so you can have google or youtube on one screen and eve on the other.
My best advice is make friends. Either join a new player friendly corp or find some new player friendly chat channels but learning this game is almost impossible without some experienced friends to hold your hand early on. I'm not saying you can't loan wolf it I'm just saying that will be the hard way. |
