Dear CCP and every other pilot who knows what's up...Login screens.
People have yelled and cried about them for years now with little effect. True, the launcher solves a bundle of tech issues that hampered players and devs alike, but in the process of fixing that, something immense was lost - Liminality
Liminality - as per Merriam-Webster: "of, relating to, or being an intermediate state, phase, or condition: in-between, transitional"
The old login screens were mental primers that we were crossing into something - donning the robes, so to speak. The liminal period is something that's been burned into the human psyche, and in the case of something like EVE that is so closely parallel to one's identity, where we become a character and a name not our own, the playerbase needs that liminal period where we know we're crossing into something other-than, and not just 'logging in' to a computer application. Even without fully logging into the game, if you let the old launcher idle in the background, it was there reminding you that at any moment you could cross-over and establish otherness.
The launcher was a perfect virtual representation of that transitional period from 'normal' life to 'other', and served the purpose of immersion that the current launcher simply cannot achieve. Being able to identify with the game in such a way was highly important to achieving the old magic of EVE that got so many of us elegantly hooked back in the beginning. The magic was there, guys. The people are asking for it again. Perhaps there is a middle path. Bring back the old mind control. o7 |

Civilized behaviour is knowing that violence is barbaric, but paying other people to do it is business.

What the login needs is a three pronged attack: Subliminal, Liminal, and Superliminal.
Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

Make it three, Loyd. It's been one of those weeks.

If he made it a double, then he would still come in over the three.. unless you are talking about three doubles.. in which case you might be starting to wander into Ralph territory....

I'm there. Or, am heading into the process of being there....or, to put in terms related to this topic:
I'm currently Subliminal, heading toward Liminal, with an end-state goal of Superliminal.

I think once you click on a character, they should animate it so it turns its back towards you, and then your point of view passes through its brain so you start looking through its eyes, and you see... your ship. Liminally. |

EDIT: And for super-liminality, they can slow-motion the passage through the brain, and attach chat bubbles to the various areas of your grey matter with the login screen hints and tips that we used to have... "You I can double-click in space to move in that direction. The autopilot can take me to another solar system, making travel easy." and so on.
When I first read this, made me chuckle. However after thinking about it, definitely something to consider.

Login screens are the gateway between you and the virtual world you're about to enter. Done well, they do add a sense of immersion and a feeling of "Here we go!" Clicking play on the launcher just doesn't feel the same |

Imagine twelve years of dealing with us...plus however many more are to come. We can't start being nice now; way too late for that! |
