The most troubling quote I have read from CCP Fozzie regarding capitals was this: GÇ£WeGÇÖve been thinking for a while about what we want to do with them. What I can say safely is that weGÇÖve been moving in a direction of wanting to shift them towards active on-grid but non-damaging effects. To have the kind of things that act as force multipliers that you really want to have in your fleet but that donGÇÖt just blap people.GÇ¥ (http://www.lowseclifestyle.com/2015/03/csm9-ccp-fozzie-on-supers-on-eve.html)
I donGÇÖt like this idea from CCP Fozzie. It sounds and feels like a capital ship nerf. People love capital ships, so I donGÇÖt think this is the way to go. Capital ships are about to get a rebalance and I hope they did not go this way. I have another solution to rebalancing capital ships. My solution is to actually buff capitals and provide counterplay in different ways. So I actually have three solutions for this that go hand in hand. The first one is mandatory the other two are some cool ideas to spice things up.
1# Raison-d'+¬tre
2# Buff Capitals
3# Counterplay
GÇöGÇöGÇö 1# Raison-dGÇÖ+¬tre First and foremost people need reasons to use their capitals. I don't really care how you do it, but I do have some suggestions. I would have liked to talk about Japanese WW2 ship design versus American WW2 ship design and how that all influenced the way commanders thought about naval battles. But I figured that would be long and boring so I am just going to forget about nuance and say: Final Showdown!
The idea of a apocalyptic final battle where everything is on the line, when it is do or die, when we separate the men from the boys, etc. etc. You have all heard the metaphors. Truth is, this is an idea that appeals to many people. The Japanese during WW2 believed that one day the two opposed pacific fleets would clash in a huge battle and the one to win that battle, would go on to win the war. (It was called Kantai Kessen) Basically B-R5RB in EVE terms.
We love B-R5RB battles, we make monuments for them, because they are so cool. These are the fights that attract people to EVE and motivates people to keep playing. So there need to be mechanics in place that can force these sorts of engagements to take place. The key to this is commitment. Both sides need to be committed to obtaining the objective and they need to have incentive to risk assets to achieve that objective. To prove my point: How disappointed are you when I tell you that the Japanese and Americans never had their all-out warship brawl?
Capitals need to be useful, there need to be reasons to field them and to fight over them. If we can find a way to get capital ships fighting again, then we can start talking about the next points.
2# Buff Capitals Capitals need a buff. The more I think about it myself, the more I agree with that statement. Now when I say GÇ£buffGÇ¥, I don't mean, tweak their numbers, double their damage and be done with it. I mean give them more options. Like make them able to be Subcapital killers, while that offsets their ability to fight other capitals, and not just by swapping out drones. They need to be able to do more things that are useful.
Think about it, what are capitals used for now that Aegis Sov is here? Shooting POS towers and POCO's are about the only thing they are used for. CCP has announced during Fanfest 2015 that they will be overhauling ALL structures. So in the foreseeable future POS towers will be changed and you probably won't even be able to use your capitals for that anymore. So if they become useless, why not give them a new role? If they become more useful, people will start to use them more and there will be more opportunities to do things with them in general, but most of all: fight with them and against them. So by buffing I mean, give them things to do. I would love to see some unique modules that can be fitted only to capitals like the Remote ECM burst or the triage module. More of that. Give them a GÇ£murder subcapitals moduleGÇ¥. Give them a GÇ£on grid mining boosterGÇ¥ module. Give them a decloack shockwave. I don't care, just get these beauties on field and doing things. We need to fight over them and against them. Either by themselves or by calling in vast amounts of support.
ADDENDUM: CCP has recently released a dev blog with new info on future structure reinforcement timers, I am liking the new approach over the older entosis link approach. This is off-topic however.
But If we make capitals able to fight subcaps effectively, then we will right back to where we started. Capitals are again top dog and the meta will be: GÇ£bring a carrier or go homeGÇ¥. This is absolutely NOT what I want. So I have another suggestion.

How about 'No.' and '-1'?
http://community.eveonline.com/news/dev-blogs/citadels-sieges-and-you-v2/ says Citadels will be destroyed by DPS, so the only capital change I can get behind at the moment is a +1 for if only battleships and above are able to do DPS to the new structures. That would give several largely unused ship classes a reason to be fielded regularly. |

Capitals and more specifically supercaps are useful, in fact, they used to be so useful that nobody flew anything else!
I would rather see them removed from the game than to go back to capitals online.
I believe that moving capitals to a support role is a fantastic idea, they ought to support your main fleet, not be a fleet unto themselves.
Also, I dont think you understand the concept of counter play... Counter play means that the players have mechanics and abilities which increase their choices when X mechanic happens, not that they actually have a counter that you have specifically designed to be the counter to X mechanic. Having 1 specific "this is the counter I designed so use it" option is idiotic. |

When I think of capital ships and their proper place in this game the modern aircraft carrier in all it's shapes and sizes come to mind. Stripped of the combat equipment and the personnel the carriers themselves are nearly worthless. The combat equipment and personnel they carry can be effective without the carrier bt they are even more so when they have the ship to support them.
Applying that to EvE the capital class ships should become like the modern carriers and offer different sizes and different capabilities so they can fil a variety of roles in supporting the rest of the fleet. this would make the various cap ships a critical component of a fleet while removing any direct (meaning DPS) contribution to the fleet. And yet if they were properly balanced they would not be a "requirement" to have on filed as other ships could fill the vast majority of the roles normally filled by the caps. |
