Billboards at gates, CTDs and graphics. What do these three items have in common and why have Tech 2 Auxillary Power Cores been installed in the office? Redundancy explains all this and more in his latest Dev Blog. There's even a new ship render for the Matari capsuleers out there.

Originally by: Redundancy One has involved our attempts to sort out forum portrait rendering, and the other was a nasty surprise with billboards flipping out and causing hideous lag.
Hope they show up in time though :) Would be good to see faces for a change.

I may be missing something but if billboards are causing more than one or two crashes and initial attempts to fix this didn't work, why not remove billboards entirely until it is fixed instead of having a select group of people being affected until it gets fixed?
Odd problem though and the mini stuff looks awsome

They shoot people, too!
Anyways, the render looks nice, but the totally dark background is a wee bit irritating... any chance of getting a more lit version, or one with brighter background? :) Glad to hear all the ships are done... can't wait for the new engine :D *likes pretty things bery buch* --- WTS: Forum Signatures, 30mil a piece. Hmm, rust on rust in a rendering. Looks VERY nice. I wonder how this new graphics engine will effect min system requirements...

Pretty weird bugs you're getting... good job finding it so fast. :) Maybe you can even find the mail bug in time for next patch as well, its driving us up the wall...
Or hmm, maybe not, seems the patch is tomorrow. Well, SoonÖ then. --- Eve Wiki | Eve Tribune | Eve Pirate |

Love the new ship designs. I really hope that Raven gets her share of new design. Even if it doesn't even look like the old Raven anymore, I'm completely fine with it.

From what I understand Asgeir has re-conceptualised a lot of the pre-existing minmatar ships to take more advantage of the new engine - would it be possible for us to see some more of the re-conceptualised minmatar ships in the near future? (such as the typhoon)
For the record, asgeir's online portfolio contains several sketches of re-conceptualised minmatar ships (including the said scythe and burst) - one of the issues of EON magazine contains a revised Tempest, although typhoon has been missing in action :)

I'm surprised the client disn't have something to try and catch an exception so we could all finally move on. When anything is downloaded there is a chance it might be bad. |

So why don't you just have a CCP machine verify jpg links before mass distribution, or host all the advertisement jpgs at CCP after verifying them?

When Redundancy says these jpg's are "ones we were downloading from the internet", I don't think he means that they're on some random non-CCP host. Given these images are ads for in-game NPC entities, and bounty portraits, that would make no sense.
Instead, I think what he means is that these images are downloaded from CCP's servers on demand, rather than being pre-distributed in the client download or rendered directly by the client.
If the images were corrupt on the server, then replacing them would have been an easier fix than the one described of removing them. It's far more likely that the corruption was happening during the transmission from server to client. This is backed up by his mention of:
Originally by: Redundancy the change that messed up how http downloads work which was causing it.
So basically, it seems the sequence was:
1) Change made that broke http downloads 2) jpg files downloaded via http, resulting in corrupted copies in the local cache 3) billboard attempts to load corrupted local copy and falls over. 4) Patch released to fix http downloads, and ensure billboards handle broken jpg's gracefully. ------- There is no magic Wand of Fixing, and it is not powered by forum whines. |

because it would most likey take more work and patches to turn them off then fix and then turn them on again.

One thing I did like about Mini ships was the almost 'Solar Sail' designs they had to them.
Everybody disses the Mini ships because they look like the 80's VW of the E-Verse, but the Sails make the Mini ships.
Now it just looks like another slap of metal that really serves no purpose, at least with the old sail design it was like:
"Hey, the Minnie's being resource strapped have decided to tap the one resource that is in abundance. Solar Energy. Which also explains the low Capacitors of the ships, as Solar Energy doesn't quite stack up to the other Racial Power Plants" Sig nerfz0rd. Remember kids, it's 400x120 and less than 24,000 bytes (not kbytes) -Conuion Meow

*Sigh Not the solar sails again. It just doesn¦t make any sense whatsoever to have solar sails when you have a fusion or even nuclear powersource onboard. Thats like mounting a bicycle dynamo on a racingcar. The only thing that makes remotely sense, from a low-tech approach to starship building, is that theses sails are either heatsinks or part of the sensorsuite.
BTW. ASGEIR I fricken hope you backed up all your pics cause the damn homepage E X P I R E D 111!!!!evelen

Here might be a decent answer for the billboard solution:
When downloading jpg's from somewhere, load the client first, then display them as they come in. Maybe have them be covered by white noise until they get there. And maybe consider putting a check in the client of 'is this a valid jpg'?
I see you have a solution already, but this is what I would do.
