Hi All, I was wondering if I could get some suggestions or thoughts on a progression path. Started about a week ago and am at a cross-roads - newbie SP = 475k.
What level mastery of BattleCruisers for level3 Security??? I understand Drake is probably lower
Remainig training time for Mastery Certifications --> Moa (Tier2) = 2 days
Ferox (Tier1) = 14 hours Ferox (Tier2) = 9.5 days
Drake (Tier1) - 21 hours Drake (Tier2) = 11 days
Naga (Tier1) = 3.7 days Naga (Tier2) = 6 days
Notes: 1. I'd like to practice "cheap" frigate and destroyer PVP in a Corp to improve and get comfortable with null-sec. 2. I'd like to Grind lvl3 and lvl4 security missions "for fun" and isk on the side 3. Rails seem to fit my playstyle, but haven't tried rapid missiles and have had limited exposure to light missiles early game 4. Would likely eventually train up rails/missiles/drones to be versatile 5. Primarily caldari, but would eventually train up Gallente if they are that much better in rails

Don't bother with mastery, it's a VERY rough guide on what skills are relevant to a ship.
As always I suggest just getting a reasonable fitting together and just going for it.
As far as I'm aware, no level 3 mission has warp disrupting rats in it so if you feel uncomfortable just warp out. |

Just go for it.
If your skills are on the low side look the missions up -> here <- and make sure they are not beyond your level before accepting them. |

AE lvl 3 is described as scramming but no idea if it actually does.

I know nothing about PVE really so I'll cover the cheap frigate and destroyer PVP part of the question.
The Kestrel is a pretty cool ship to use when starting frigate PVP. It's bonus to range means that even with very low SP you'll be able to reach out and hit targets out to scram range (9km). On top of that, rockets, and missiles in general are easier to use. In most instances, all you need to ask yourself is whether the target is within range. If yes, fire. If not, get in range. Missile damage can be mitigated, but not entirely avoided (with a few exceptions).
Turrets generally have more 'moving parts' so to speak. On top of keeping two different ranges in mind (Optimal and Falloff), you also have to worry about tracking. A small target orbiting very close to a turret ship (this is especially true with Rails) is extremely difficult to hit. The close range variant turrets have much better tracking than their long range counterparts to deal with this reality. So Blasters are great, high damage, high tracking. **** for range though, anything further than your nose is laughing at you. Rails get ridiculous ranges, but awful tracking (although, the further you are from what you're shooting at, the better the tracking).
You like rails, well you're in luck. One of the most popular cheapo fleet compositions is the "Longbow Doctrine" which relies on large numbers of Rail Cormorant hitting up to 100km away. They don't have to worry about tracking at that kind of range. I haven't personally used a Kestrel much, or maybe at all, but I can see a lot of potential with it. My friends also recommend it. Here is a popular EVE youtuber/and pvper taking out a 2million SP character in a Kestrel. You can start even earlier of course, he has videos in other frigates with even younger characters. I recommend watching the full video, he goes over many important aspects of PVP.
Because sometimes you die. And sometimes we are why. GSLLC is Recruiting.
Grrr I tell you. Grrr.

t1 frig pvp with corp mates is some of the most fun you can have in eve. I fondly remember doing it as a newb.
mastery levels are somewhat like guide lines, some skills are more important than others. I like to focus on damage, especially for pve. that said it is pretty easy to do a lot of skills to level 2 or 3, so spreading out isn't always a bad thing. tank skills need to be high enough that you can stay in missions without warping out. A little help in support skills is nice to lock extra targets, and to be able to lock faster. And of course fitting skills so you can actually put stuff on your ship.
I think the ferox is about to get a nice buff, so it might become better, although the drake is the more classic choice.
I think learning some basics on rails, missiles, and drones is a good idea. Drones are useful on almost every ship bigger than a frigate, I did a bit of drone training when I was pretty new and working on level 3s. eventually training gallente is a decent idea as well. the gurista pirate ships are pretty strong and will use missiles, drones, shield, caldari, and gallente skills.

Thanks again for everyone's input and advice! Yeah i decided early on to round out a bit by training all the combat skills that take less than 3-4 hours or level 3ish so that I'd have a decent core....I've been using the mastery levels to look for the skills in the tree that i haven't injected yet or need a prerequisite for...
I learned the hard way when I bumped up to cruiser that the tracking speed (even with only 200mm guns) becomes an issue, though the drones + a tracking mod helped a tad.....Definitely makes me lean away a bit from the Naga if I'm having this much trouble with frigates with cruiser guns...I've given up on blasters in PVE - could not tank the damage long enough to blow things away (though this was before I learned about grouping the guns...)
Definitely appreciative of that Kestrel tip - first google search brought up "Eve is Easy - New Player Low SP 0.0 Kestrel PVP guide" =)....I guess I'll have vids to keep me company while grinding some 3s
Eve survival is definitely nice and I've been browsing it for a few missions to try to figure out if I would take a faction hit. Though I think my main concern with doing these in a cruiser is it just takes too damn long! (200mm guns + the tracking issue against frigates). I timed my first one - took me about 1 hour to kill 21 mediums and 23 small ships. Though the warp out in which I bought 20 more cap booster 200s to survive...All for 1M isk
I think I've settled on: 1.. Getting a bit comfort with missiles using a Kestrel / Corax to grind level1s until I have all the prereqs for at least level2-3 on all the missile skills 2. Using a ferox and continuing medium turret skills since the Naga's large glass cannon will drive me nuts killing frigates on level 3 missions. 3. Holding off on doing too many 3s if a ferox is too slow until I get a drake 4. Playing around with the same Kestrel in low sec =)
Thanks Again! |

Both. On some ships, you have a limit of gunnery slots and and an extra missile slot, or vice versa. But to pick one first, blasters or rails if focusing on pvp, and missiles if focusing on pve. Not set in stone though, there is some crossover. For Caldari ships, yes missiles are going to be the better choice imo as most of the others are slightly irrelevant compared to other racial ships... well have their uses but not as popular as the missile ships. And in that, Kestrel or hookbill -> Caracal -> Drake is the common path. Yet Drake isn't an end goal, but just another stepping stone to whatever direction you are headed which by that point usually becomes more specialized. But Drake is a good ship to be in for a while while you work up your SP.
I'm in it for the money

Missiles work fine in PVP in solo or smaller engagements, it's only in big fleet fights where missiles tend to be shunned (unless it's a doctrine). It's really just personal preference but I would say that if you're new to it all, with the complexity and stress of pvp, it would probably help if you make it a bit easier on yourself by using missiles and a buffer fit. That way you'll have less variables to deal with and can focus more on the fight itself. Once you got the hang of it and, to some extend, stop freaking out then you can still decide what you want to be doing and which ships you want to be flying.
On the whole: don't try to rush things, you can't powerlevel and there's no point in trying to force stuff (as you already found out). There is no level 100 nor are there purples to be farmed, what you need is knowledge and experience (more so than skill points or isk). A PVP fit frigate will cost you some 1-5 mil realistically, if you find a way to make 10 mil isk in an enjoyable manner then you can buy yourself a bunch of ships to get blown up in.
Don't look too far ahead but find to making it interesting right now. |
