After a couple years looking at the stars, I finally took the plunge. I just wanted to drop in and say hi. I'll be mostly lurking in the forums trying to absorb some information and running amuck in game for the next couple months (longer if it sticks). I've been watching this from a distance for a while since it was first brought to my attention, but didn't really start looking more in depth at it until recently. I've never been much of a PvP fan, which is the biggest factor that has kept me away. The fact there is a whole side to it other than just ship vs ship battles was enough to finally pull me in.
Looking forward to exploring the science/industry path.
I may thoroughly enjoy this, I may not. Only time will tell. But at least now I will finally know for sure one way or the other. |

It will probably depend on how much of a "not a fan" you are; even if you focus on industry and try to stay away from PVP, everyone is logging into the same "server" so at some point you'll bump into others. |

Oh, I know it's going to happen now & again...and probably a fairly common occurrence. I don't mind a bit, hell it can be fun now and again if running with the right group of people (ie: having fun, not necessarily having to win every time). I've never been able to get into FPS games where it's nothing but PVP. I tend to bore of them pretty quickly...and get annoyed/frustrated when you get put in a match against spawn campers and there is nothing else in the game to do. There appears to be quite a lot to this game beyond just the ship vs ship battles, which is what I find intriguing. If you run into a spawn camper, you can go and do something else for a while.
I'm coming from Guild Wars 2 as my primary MMO experience (been playing that pretty much since launch), where I tend to bounce around between both the PvP & PvE aspects of the game. Having options to work on/towards depending on what kind of mood I'm in is nice and can likely keep me around for a while. And before you say it...yes I'm aware this isn't GW2. |

As long as you realize (and it seems that you do) that this is very different from GW2 and similar MMOs, that it requires a different approach. You should be fine. A lot of the 'rage' and disappointment one can sometimes see from newbies regarding EVE I think stems from not realizing exactly what one is getting into. I can sympathize on some level considering there are few, if any other MMOs like this so one might not be prepared for it. However, EVE marketing doesn't exactly hide what it is, so that sympathy has hard limits from me.
Obviously I'm generalizing for simplicity's sake, but it's a trend that's not hard to notice.
Keep an open mind, have a thick skin, band-aids at the ready, a smile in your back pocket and you'll be fine. EVE is 'serious business', not serious business.
Feel free to mail me if you have any questions, If I am unable to help, I can refer you to those who know better.
Welcome, and have fun !

Focus on fun. Explore as many of the different aspects of the game as you can before deciding what is "good" or "bad" as both are really subjective and depend on you!
Remember there are many groups in the game that will happily help newer players out. Look them up when you feel you need to.
Remember this is a game designed to be played with other people. Take that as given.
Good hunting!

Do yourself a favor and do a little research!
By research, I mean reading, specifically the links in this forum post.
Even if you're not looking for a life of pvp, knowing a thing or two about how the pvp crowd operates will enhance your survivability a thousandfold, for free!

Azda Ja's post was right on the money. If you understand that Eve is nothing like all those other MMOs and come to it with an open mind you'll probably like it. If you try to play Eve as if it were those other MMO's you'll have a rough time with Eve. I'm willing to be that Eve has a much higher retention rate with people who have played few or no other MMOs than those that have played many or most others.
I also can't play FPS games and am not a fan of PvP. I'm been playing Eve on and off but mostly on since 2009. While I admit I don't know any other players as averse to PvP as myself I've met others that don't care for it all that much or are indifferent to it. So while we may be the minority here you can play this game and have fun as a non-PvP type.
I actually think this game has a lot for the non-competitive types. The stuff that you build in this game is actually needed and gets used. There are also plenty of activites for cooperative group efforts in this game.
Just keep in mind that the vast majority of the conent in this game is player created. If you are looking for some awesome solo PvE game with lots of solo PvE content and some challenging well balanced, structured group PvE then Eve is not the game for you.
My playstyle is very different than yours but feel free to drop me an in game mail if you have any questions, even if it's a while down the road. |

I have an science/industry alt and one thing I can share is how very passive and click-intensive it is.
Once you have the necessary skills and materials, you just click and set the invention queue, click and set the manufacturing queue, then log in again later when both are finished to sell your products at the market and start the process all over again.
I'd advise having another career that you can do alongside it as your main form of activity when actually logged in like mining, mission running, exploring or pvp.
Maybe even station or region trading, since part of making a profit in invention/manufacturing is doing lots and lots of market research. Might as well benefit from all the legwork you'll need to do. |
