Hi all,
I've recently moved to lowsec from a life in null. I'm looking into pewing some FW guys running their sites.
So far I've had medium success with a slasher going after small stuff. I'd like to do as much solo as I can, but I have 3 toons in total with me.
I can fly pretty much any subcap, over 100m skillpoints on my main and ~60m each on my alts.
So, I'm in Jita with my JF now trying to decide what to bring. I guess I need some frigs that will win more often than my cheap slasher. Also I need bigger ships to go into the bigger sites. Prefer minmatar but I can do pretty much anything (apart from lasers).
Any suggestions?

There are a few frigs that can effectively make use of a dualprop + scramkite setup. |

The best way to learn the meta is to join a FW corp. There should be plenty of people to share fits with you.
Ironically it is actually better to ask the opposing militias opinion as to which corp to join for quality, as they will know who they regard as a serious threat amongst their enemies. As long as they give you a genuine answer that is.
So if you want to join:
Cal Mil - ask Gal Mils opinion
Amarr Mil -ask Mini Mils opinion
And vice versa.
Hope that helps.
Edit - if you are looking to be a pirate then you will have to chat to pirate groups living in the warzones, but they have little reason to help you. |

I will just the list the T1 and fac frigates I like the most. This is just personal preference, and they might not be the best ships to enter into a defended plex with.
T1: -tristan(brawl, kite and neut) -atron (both rail and blaster) -incursus(double rep, blaster) -breacher(rockets, Dual MASB or Dual MASB/SAAR)
Faction: -comet(hull tanked) -republic fleet firetail(sometimes double web, sometimes not)
I would recommend though to buy one of every frigate you can fly decently and see by trial by fire which ones you like the most. Alternatively you can tell us if you like brawling, scram kiting or pure kiting and it will be easier to guide you towards a ship you might like.
When you feel like you know what you are doing, you can also play around with the pirate frigs. A lot of people will not engage those solo, so beware of the blop.
Then ofc. you would need to learn the engagement profile of each ship. You don't want to jump into a plex where something kitey is sitting in your AB blaster frig.
Other people might have better advice, wish you the best of luck. |

I haven't really pvped much recently so I don't know all the metas. But generally you want to fly stuff that will allow you to engage allot of different ships and at least have a chance. Ideally you can engage allot of ships in your own class and a few ships a class up.
In low sec there traditionally were a few different ranges you wanted to look at. Point blank, edge of scram range, and disruptor range. What range do you want to be with your ship. (your ship will have the most *effective* dps and tank at that range) How are you going to make sure you can get to that range? And what is your plan b if you can't get to the range you want?
One big question from the start is whether you have an ogb alt. Because the fits that can work and what they can do will change drastically depending on if you have one or not.
What I recommend is looking at some of the active faction war or low sec pirate corps and finding the top solo killers. Then look at the ships they get the solo kills with and then look at their lossmails for those fits. Plug them into eft and see if you can understand how they would pilot them to get kills. Some ships like garmurs can be pretty obvious others may have more nuanced theories behind them.
Good luck.
Make faction war occupancy pvp instead of pve

Loaded question....
I'll give you my thoughts for what it's worth. Before you invest 2 much find and area of FW space you want to live in, and scout it for a bit. Learn the groups and the tactics they tend to favor. Certain ships are more win than others, but you also have 2 factor in boosters, etc.
Also, join a FW corp and all those questions you asked will be quickly answered - plus they can give you a good sense of the lay of the land.
TBH - a lot of your fights will probably be against pirate groups and they tend to fly blingy stuff - more faction mods, etc.
Tactics tend to have a certain consistency once a particular ship is successful and until counters begin to catch up in a area. Once your in the war zone it'll start to show itself.
Commit, and the knowledge will fill your brain.

Get an alt set up to run off grid links from a cloaky T3.

Not sure if being hypocrite or ironic. That or you want him to do that and then shout at him for being unfair because OGB!

You don't need links, there's plenty of fights available while avoiding those pilots. Spend a little time in the area and the pilots who use them will be very obvious, you can just add them to contacts and make your own "links offenders register" |

I'm a realist. Until they get nerfed, OGB are the single best trump card money can buy. I fleet with people who have them at every possible opportunity.
I still recognize that they're horrible for the game and argue for them to be nuked from orbit at every possible opportunity. At this point I've become an old hand at keeping track of and avoiding link users, unless I have them myself.
Refusing to use links while waiting for CCP to sort them out properly would be like refusing to use pre-nerf Ishtars, or present day svipuls. It's just futile self-torment. |

Well he was asking about the best tactics for PvP in the FW zone...having a nigh untouchable pet that gives you +25% speed, ehp, lock range and point range is pretty useful.
Also doubles as a nearly uncatchable scout that can run combat probes. |

I am holding you responsible for every liver poisoning related death that happens to an EVE player from now on. I project that 50% of the EVE playerbase will die within the week and level off until only the russian are left.

Pointing out that something is obviously terrible for a game equals crying, who knew?
Does anyone actually want to argue that buying a link alt is not the single best thing you can do to improve your chances in solo and small gang PvP?

The important thing about ensuring you get fights in FW is to bring something people will want to fight. Sounds obvious but so many people overlook it and try taking blatant direct counters. You want to have everything available from the humble rail Incursus to a Rattlesnake (or equivalent) power house for taking on gangs.
EG: 10-20 T1 frigs 10 Navy Faction Frigs 2-3 Pirate Faction Frigs 5 T3 Dessies 10 T1 Cruisers 2 Cloaky/D-Scan immune gankers (Stratios/Curse etc) 2-3 HACs 5+ BCs 2 BS
A good mix such as the above lets you get practically every fight that comes into system with the appropriate ship. Remember the goal is not just to win the fight but get the fight in the first place.
