Hello, I'm planning to buy a new PC and I need some advice from the pro or experienced users here whether I can take real advantage of the following components in EVE or not.
Core2 Duo Processor (E6400) - I know I've read many posts about dual core processors, but can someone actually having this CPU enlighten me whether it's worth the money, or should I stick with a single core unit? (I only play EVE Online, I don't care about FPS stuff).
NVIDIA 8800GTX or 8800GTS - question is the same, will it make a BIG difference in EVE, or should I stick with one of the 7xxx series (price/performance ratio)?
2x1GB Corsair DDR800 (twin kit)
Just to let you know, I'm upgrading from this: AMD Athlon64 3000+ (S939) NVIDIA 6600GT 128MB (AGP) 2x1GB Kingston DDR400 Note: graphics card is dead actually as of today, so replacing the core peripherals of the machine (i.e. motherboard, CPU, graphics card) is a must to keep up with technology and future upgradability (PCI-E graphics, DDR2 memory, etc).
If you can, please give me advice on choosing the right motherboard for the setup above.
Thank you.

A dual-core processor is very much worth the money. It won't help your maximum fram-rate or anything like that, but it does make the whole system run smoother.
Eve isn't graphics-card dependant at all really, so an 8800 is massive overkill. A cheap 7300 would do the job just as well. TBH, I wouldn't buy an 8800. They're big, expensive, hot, power-thirsty monsters. I'd get a 7300 or 7600 card and wait six months for the second generation DX10 cards to come out. |

Thanks for the input m8 so I drop the 8800 line of NVIDIA. I myself also considered this a bit too powerful for EVE.
Besides going for the dual core CPU setup will I have to play around with the "set-affinity-to-0" thing or is there a fix already I may not know of? Can EVE actually benefit from the "doubled" processing power?

Edited by: Daemon Jax on 26/12/2006 14:22:26 Hardly anything benefits from having dual cores, really.
I'd go for the E6600 cpu instead of the e6400... it's worth the price difference, and will last you longer.
EDIT: E6600 is 299 USD while E6400 is 214 USD

I haven't had to do any of that on my AMD dual-core. I just installed the MS and AMD patches and Eve runs perfectly. Fast, smooth and not a CTD to be seen. I can't vouch for the Intel dual-cores, though.
Eve benefits a bit from dual-core. The client isn't multi-threaded itself, but the graphics drivers and a few parts of DirectX are so there's a small performance gain. The second core is mainly useful in preventing background tasks like virus checkers and firewalls from slowing Eve down.
I love dual-cores because they mean I can take fraps footage without grinding the machine to a halt
To be honest, the whole single-core/dual-core debate is pointless given the minescule price difference. |

Please Bombcrater tell me what graphics card do you have? Also do you use FSAA while playing EVE? I want to play EVE at 1280x1024 resolution and I expect a nice framerate with all quality settings maxed.

the 8800 series is designed to run on dx10, running it on dx9 wont make hardly any differnce

OK, I've made the upgrade. Specs are the following:
Intel Core2 Duo E6600 (2,4 GHz) 2x1GB Corsair XMS DDR2 800 ASUS 7600GS 256MB Silent...
Framerate increased by 70% at least while docked (about 200 fps at the moment). Still need to check when doing some mission with heavy aggro and massive target locking.
