I started a new character since I haven't played in quite sometime and am working through the opportunities and have come up to the one called To Boldly go where it wants you to fit a probe launcher and find a signature.
First, I don't think it gives enough information to new players (for example it doesn't specify that you should have 8 probes) but for the life of me I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. There were four signatures in the area I was in and I tried setting them to narrow over one of the signatures. I kept shrinking the bubbles but they won't go any smaller and yet I can't locate a location.
What the heck am I doing wrong? Is there a suggested video to watch for launching probes? I was hoping this one was going to be clearer as this is the part of the game that made my wife lose interest last time she went through the tutorials as well.
Here is a screenshot I took of my probes over a green location before I quit and went back to work: http://imgur.com/g5rWzkb |

Isn't "green location" = "you've found it"?
Red dot = the actual site is vaguely around here somewhere. Yellow dot = it's nearby, but you haven't pinned it down enough to warp to it Green dot = right-click and warp to it already. Oh, recall your probes too.
EDIT: I guess not. Video from last year, they likely changed the map / interface since that time. |

Ok, your comment got exactly what it was. When I first opened the probe scanner it was showing four green entries (and I was trying to scan on a green location). Just tried now and there was one that didn't have a percentage or the arrows so I scanned around that and got it. Thanks for the point in the right direction and for the video link! |

what probes are you using? if you are using combat probes they don't go as small as core probes. Also there are modules and rigs that you can use to increase your probe strength, as well as sister's probes and even a faction launcher if you are feeling exceptionally free with the isk.
You did not need to abandon your old character to try opportunities. You can do them on your old character. The new opportunities are intentionally vague. They want you to have to learn how to figure stuff out on your own. The old way of holding people's hands through tutorials and then unleashing them into a game that was not at all structured like that lost a lot of trials. The new system works better at converting trials to players as there is more consistency.
As far as videos go there is nothing in this game that is "suggested". There are plenty of videos out there as well as communities, blogs, ingame channels etc... dedicated to exploration. You'll have to watch some of the videos on your own and figure out which work best for you with some trial and error. If you don't like playing around with something until you figure it out then you probably won't like Eve because that is most of what this game is.
If your wife didn't like having to figure stuff out then she probably won't like this game.
I can't see the scanning UI in your picture so what percentage do you have it to because like Memphis said it looks like you have it. |

I was using Core Probe Launcher I and Core Scanner Probe I.
"If your wife didn't like having to figure stuff out then she probably won't like this game. "
Thankfully the game isn't just about scanning! She was fine with everything else though at the time, but thank you. |

I was not trying to be critical of your wife. I was just pointing out that this game is not for everyone. There is a reason that it is populated with mostly IT department geeks and has a very high percentage of males. It's a game for people that like to blow stuff up and poke at things to figure out how they work. |

Yeah some sites are already pre-found for you, and appear in the window already. I guess you can think of them as public.
For finding the hidden sites that require probes, the probing skills (Astrometrics etc.) make a big difference, and also if the ship you're flying has a bonus to scan strength, and finally, using Sisters of EVE probes (they're more expensive, but if you remember to recall your probes you never lose them, so most people go for them). You won't be able to get the green dot "lock" on some of the more difficult sites unless you improve your chances by having a higher scan strength.
EDIT: the "must have 8 probes" is I guess overlooked; they assumed you'd figure it out since the probe launcher has room for 8. |

Had the same issue yesterday, you get to a high percentage 90%+ but cannot seem to get that last couple of %'s
Well if you hold SHIFT while in probe scanner you can move individual probes to a new location that helped me. Just when you move move more then one(ex. opposite side probes left, right,up,down etc.)
Hope it helps. |

When wormholes first came out back in 2009 I recall devs saying that certain sites in game required near perfect skills in a bonused ship with mods and / or rigs to increase probe strength. I'm not sure if this is still the case but it is worth pointing out that there are sites sufficiently difficult that with low skills and no special modules and / or in a ship with no bonues that you will not be able to get to 100%
Most, if not all, of the sites in high sec are not of the extra specially difficult to scan down variety. I believe most of these exist in C5 and C6 wormholes. I've had sites in null sec that were difficult for me to scan down even with level 4 skills across the board. However I have yet to come across a site that I could not scan to 100% in a T2 scanning frig with rigs and sister's probes. I have not scanned much since the modules like the rangefinding and pinpointing arrays have been introduced so that should make things easier. The implants can be helpful also but they are more expensive.
If you enjoy scanning and want to do it alot I suggest that you get any skills that effect probe strength or deviation up to 4. Don't forget about relevant ship skills like racial frig or cov ops frig. You also might want to keep some gravity capacitor rigs around as well as the array mods mentioned above and maybe a flight of sister's probes. If you are getting a signal to >90% then any one of those should do the trick.
Certainly there are enough things to increase your scanning ability that I doubt all level 4 skills are even necessary and all level 5 skills I can only see being useful in combat situations like when you are trying to scan down a worm hole faster than the opposing fleet in wormhole exit rolling exercises.
That being said just because you can find a site every once-in-a-while that you can't get to 100% with level 3 skills doesn't mean that you can't have a successful career in exploration. |

if you hold ALT instead of shift you can move the whole cluster in one go, making it a lot easier and faster. |

Anomalies show as green on the sensor overlay, and don't require probing to warp to. Same for mining and gas sites.
Only stuff in red on the sensor overlay requires probing. |
