So, I am in the process of mass-training again - 150+ days in my queue, mainly made of exploration, PvP and core skills. I trained up quite a bit, leaving me short of 90 days till I can fly an actual Carrier. I'm still choosing between the Chimera and the Archon. But then, the brutal realization hit me.
What if capitals are not worth it?
I mean, the whole capital ship genocide started last year with the introduction of Phoebe. The jump nerfs were a necessary evil, I admit - they prevent the ability of a quick response force from the big power blocs. This, in theory, is a good idea, it prevents nullsec from stagnating in a Cold War style conflict. However, it's also boring a f*ck and, in general, badly implemented - travel is now slower and more tedious. However, this didn't bother me much. Now, there are new capital changes coming our way, and, of course, Carriers and other caps are getting nerfed once more. Carriers will lose the ability to remote repair and their HP will be lowered, as if they weren't squishy enough.
With all these nerfs, should I still consider buying a Carrier?

Yes.
CCP is committed to making carriers and capitals relevant to the game. Aspirational, as they like to put it. If they don't get it right the first time, they'll iterate until they do.
Picking the "best" racial ship -- ah, that might be a different choice than it is currently. |

You should read those devs logs. It's not nerfs it's role changes. Otherwise too OP for one ship. Chimmy should be a good choice as well as Archon. Keeping in mind they will fix Nid which could makes it interesting. |

can't say as I have very little info on the subject. you however seem to have your mind already made up.
personally I'm wondering about the force auxiliaries, and wondering if I can move my carrier sp over into that as one of my main reasons for picking up carriers was for the remote rep possibility. that said it probably won't hurt me to not transfer and instead train that stuff up later, I do like exploding things so the potential for a dps carrier is still interesting.

I'm actually seeing MORE capitals thrown on grid more often since the Phoebe changes.
Knowing that {major power bloc's} supers are *elsewhere* gives people more confidence to escalate to capitals without having a bored PL or CFC supercap fleet dropped on them from across the other side of the map.

If you don't mind fielding one and possibly losing it, go for it.
Personally, I don't think it is worth the time or isk investment so I will never fly/own one.

I think the BIGGER question is what do you want to do with carriers?
Let's talk about then and then see if it's still worth it. |

If there is one thing i dislike, it's an 'opinion piece' masquerading as a 'question post' lol.
Whether or not something is 'worth it' to you is a matter for you to decide. |

She has a very good point there. Especially when paired with...

Do some soul searching, figure out what sort of supporting role you want to play for your friendly neighborhood fleet, figure out if a capital has such a role, and if it does, train towards that.
Let's discuss overhauling the way we get intel in EvE.

Why wouldn't I like a nano-Chimera with 5 squadrons of doom?
Mwd around the field and let your murder-fighters kill everyone, it will be glorious.

So, to answer why I want a Chimera, I just want a big-ass ship that's capable of leading fleets, slaughtering enemy targets and bringing victory to my friends. That's all, really.

at least not yet.
Anyway I've always wanted to fly a Thanatos, even with the changes and everything else i'll still be training to fly one and buying one to die in glorious combat, because it's on my bucket list.
and for what i expect to be it's short life span i will feel like an eagle soaring brilliantly through the sky. So if it's something you've always wanted to fly, then yes it is still worth training for.
