Hello.
I am interested in setting up a small control tower in null for ratting. Are there any systems which don't require me to be a renter to set up a poco? I feel like null is blocked off to me because everything is already owned by huge alliances and coalitions which are asking for obscene fees to rent a moon, etc. I don't want to do wormholes. Any suggestions?
Best,

A couple of options:
First would be to look at NPC Null instead of sov space. It's possible to take R16 and even the odd R32 moon with little risk of anyone bothering you even if you have to kill an existing POS. These can be put up close to sov if you are hoping to day trip for anom running or something and also give you access to stations as well.
Secondly, sov null has some areas that really are easy to sneak into as a small entity if you aren't looking for a valuable moon. Sov owners will receive a notification when you put a tower up, but parts of the map have quite a few unowned systems where you can put up a POS quietly and without much risk of being attacked. The main problem in that approach is the logistics of moving things in and out, which gives an additional advantage to NPC Null where you can use freight services like Black Frog or your own jump freighter.

Oh. I forgot about the pirate owned areas. But don't I need >5.0 standing to set up a POS there? |

I was going to ask 'what for' but I see you edited your post to say you want to rat. You don't have to live out of a tower to rat in null. I did when I first left empire but that was a corp with 20 or so active people. If you're solo you might be better off looking at NPC null. There are good level 4 pirate agents in some stations - although obviously those are usually more populated, and a few tucked away in quieter pockets. Or you can try find a quiet station system with no agents to base out of for ratting.
Alternatively it might be worth joining a corp in CVA, or basing in Providence. The area has a long history as new player friendly, lots of stations, and the residents operate a NRDS policy [Not Red Don't Shoot]. As long as you don't aggress them they won't engage you - although passing gangs might. And afaik their stations are accessible to people they haven't set red.
Some null alliances will recruit you if you let them know you just want to rat - it's always worth talking to a recruiter. It might be worth putting up a looking for corp post in the Recruitment forum. Obviously it depends on preference, and if you prefer to play solo that's fair enough. Joining a player group for a taster is sometimes worthwhile just to familiarise yourself with an area and the mechanics before trying it on your own.
Knowing they have more SP than I do isnGÇÖt going to stop me from taking the fight if I was going to take it.

Control Towers will no longer require faction standings to be anchored in high-security space. Moreover, Control Towers will now be anchorable in previously restricted solar systems like 0.8 and above. |

I would liek to be able to dock in the pirate stations but I think my standing is way too low from doing l4s in highsec.
EDIT: I am going to contact some alliances in null to see if I can join for ratting. |

I know this isn't what you asked, but, have you considered setting up in a C1/null WH? They're very, very empty, it would be much harder for someone to take down your tower, and given the chance of a HS roaming hole every once in a while, it might make logistics to trade hubs easier.
I lived in a C1 with just myself and my alts, and it worked out pretty well. You would want at least a medium for this though, smalls are bad. |

You can dock in any NPC station regardless of standing, but yeh sometimes having run a lot of missions in highsec makes it hard to start running pirate missions. I ran the Angel arc in Curse after corpies boosted my standings so I could accept it. It offers a huge standings boost that opens up higher level agents. Only thing is the Angel arc mission is in a busy system with an active corp (Appetite for Destruction I think) so the missions can be tricky to run for a new player - although they are relatively low level, so you can try do them during quiet periods.
There is also a standings service boost somewhere on the sell forums that occasionally offers standing boost services for pirate factions.
But tbh, if you're really not sure, I would recommend looking for a corp willing to help you. As long as you're honest about what you're looking to do, recruiters who can help will contact you. Nullsec corps aren't all CTA fascists and they will leave you to your own devices if that's your preference. Putting up a tower is a pain solo, plus the logistics of refueling/moving stuff. I'd lean towards trying it through a corp first then do the POS thing if it doesn't work out.
01101989 wrote:EDIT: I am going to contact some alliances in null to see if I can join for ratting Have a look through the recruitment forum I linked earlier to find some posts from people looking for a corp to get an idea of how to format/what to expect people to reply with. Good luck :)

You always have docking rights, irrespective of your standings.

As a side issue to this topic CCP needs to sort out the control tower management settings if they are staying for a while longer. Unfortunately without realizing I had the box ticked for attack if at war which in empire may be fine but as I also had the box ticked saying use alliance standings I was surprised to log on this morning to find our tower in null sec had been reinforced on top of this it also hadn't fired a single missile.
To top this off I was under the impression, clearly wrongly, they had fixed the issue of missile batteries going off line when the pos is reinforced this obviously is an issue for caldari towers as this is the weapon it receives bonus's to and the others weapons stay online so something seems a bit biased here clearly if pos's are staying they need to look at this issue and maybe remove cpu dependance of missile batteries maybe.
Hopefully you don't make these errors as I did but I wouldn't hold my breath for this to be fixed esp as towers may be removed soon. |

im interested to find out why alot of people dont actually know npc nullsec exists, is someone hanging out in highsec telling everyone that nullsec is just owned sov space?
Yeah npc null is your best bet but watch you dont put it somewhere you shouldnt otherwise people will shoot it with those big ships and if you have big ships like them then they will probably get even bigger ships for shooting your big ships.
