Heavy missiles have fairly decent damage application (100% against anything cruiser sized or larger), and this is further enhanced with a pair of MGEs (basically the equivalent of a T2 rigor or flare). Even elite frigates disappear in 2-3 volleys (especially with target painters). Missile velocity is in excess of 28k m/sec, so with a rate of fire of around 2.5 seconds anything inside a 70km radius just melts. As distance increases you'll start to see the occasional lost volley, but the MWD is used to maneuver to keep range under 100km (the 140km range is just incidental, as I'm primarily after missile velocity). Paper missile damage is just shy of 900 DPS, so with drones this is around 3000 applied DPS (nearly 100%), and it clears most mission rooms in a single volley. I rarely (if ever) have to reload more than twice per room in multi-room missions (exceptions are Damsel, the second room in Assault and fourth room in Scarlet). As for the lengthy reload time, yes - 35 seconds seems like an eternity, but it's really an illusion. It's equivalent to 4 cruise volleys, so I'm basically giving up an NPC battleship to reload at which point anything left gets removed in short order. And you can often reload while you're jumping to the next gate, system or mission. And this is with auto-targeting missiles. For tougher missions like Assault or Guristas Extravaganza where you're facing lots of NPC battleships, simply switch out to Fury ammunition. I've tried an auto-targeting setup with cruise missiles and it takes twice as long. You lose way to many volleys in-transit and NPCs have a nasty habit of swapping positions to mitigate damage.

The missile velocity is high enough such that I'm not sure I'll really see a lot of benefit staggering them (unlike say cruise missiles, where losing one quarter or half a volley is a far better prospect than an entire volley).
