So I've moved to low-sec ratting. I've heard of faction spawns, but it's hard to find good information on ratting NPCs. Some of the wikis seem out of date. How do I determine if an NPC is a faction spawn or not? Also, upon killing it, how do I identify its wreck among all the other? |

I've only ever had luck with Commanders. I've not had the opportunity of officers (seen them, but just in systems where I wasn't willing to risk dealing with them).

I've read that wiki, but maybe I'm missing something, but asteroid NPCs don't seem to go by those naming conventions. I've seen those names in missions, but not on asteroid belts. For example, at this belt I'm currently observing, I see Serpentis Chief Defender, Serpentis Chief Guardian, and Serpentis Port Admiral for both the Name and Type. Two cruisers and a battleship. According to that wiki, I'm supposed to see Corelum and Core. |

Mind you, it has been ages since I destroyed a commander. I remember I was disappointed that it only dropped faction ammo.
I'll do some digging. |

This is a good listing of NPC ship types and stats : http://eveinfo.com/npcships/
The ships are Asteroid NPC's.

http://eveinfo.com/npcships/i/11919/serpentis-chief-defender/
http://eveinfo.com/npcships/i/11917/serpentis-chief-guard/
Not sure about the last one but it shows it does EWAR. If I remember correctly Guardian is an Elite - Escort NPC that does EWAR.
Since CCP has been doing name changes to just about everything in the game, it's probably the same NPC.

I believe those show up in anoms rather than belts. Edit: although you could occasionally see them n belts too I suppose.

Alright, thanks. So it does still look like they use the commander prefix in the wiki Tau linked, just with different ship names. |

So far what I've been able to find agrees with much of what I remember.
Deadspace spawns use the designations linked previously, and otherwise faction spawns use their proper name.
i.e. Serpentis.
I would suggest that you should be looking for Shadow Serpentis if you want to get a decent drop. [Similarly, Dread Gurista is what I used to look for.]
I've not found more detailed info yet, so I can't say what "port admiral" represents for example. |

Most of my recent experience is with Sansha. With them I know that they have a different name. For the Faction / Commander spawns it is "True Sansha xxxxxxx" where as the normal spawns are just "Sansha xxxxxxx" There are also the hauler spawns which have a name noticably different like trucker or hauler or something but I don't recall.
Another dead give away is a higher than normal bounty but that only works before you have kill them obviously. |

Faction spawns are the Commander column in that Rat Nomenclature table. |

IIRC faction spawns have the same green symbol in their upper left corner when targeted as faction ships have in their picture. https://image.eveonline.com/Type/29337_64.png |

Ok I think this is the answer your looking for. Faction spawns look pretty much the same as other rats but will be named differantly. So an NPC will be named as "sansha whatever" or "guristas wherever", but if it is a faction spawn then a title will be added before the name. Pirate faction spawns are named:
"dread guristas..." "True sansha..." "Dark blood..." "Shadow serpintus..."
That's how you know you've found one! The wreak will also be named the same way and hopefully some Good loot. |

Looks like the question has been answered. Here is another good source.
