First, let me define "satisfactorily" as far as I'm concerned: I'd like to be able to change skills and chat with the corp as a bare, bare minimum. Being able to do stuff like fly around and do everything except PVP would be lovely. No real PVP will take place, except maybe use the laptop as a semi-AFK scout / covert ops / gang booster, that kind of stuff, i.e. nothing involving direct combat on my part.
I'm set on getting a laptop with a GeForce chip; I've been looking at a bunch which have a GeForce 7300 or 7400, maybe 7600 in some cases. I'm sure the 7600 would run EVE great (correct me if I'm wrong, though!) -- now how about those 7300s or 7400s? Is the 7300 LE an ok solution for what I'm looking for?
I also want to make sure that no memory is shared between the system and the graphic chip. Do the 7300s ever do that? I've seen stuff like "GeForce 7300 128-256 MB" on the labels in the shops I've been to and that got me worried.
Beyond EVE, the laptop will be used for mobile word processing, Internet browsing, music listening, and playing whichever games the laptop will accomodate. I'm not getting it for gaming, at all, but I'll see what I can throw at it. The priority is EVE under the conditions outlined above. I like old-school emulation anyway, and I'm not worried that won't run on a modern laptop. Thanks! --- High quality pics of ALL EVE ships!

Edited by: ParMizaN on 08/01/2007 21:16:29 WOOOOOOOOW slow down there. You can run eve on the geforce FX 5100 + range.
Anything with a prefix of 7 is overkill atm. Edit: this is because eve currently sucks on your processor more than your graphics card really, but this will be changed with the new graphics engine, trinity. However, you will probably be able to run it perfectly without sacrificing much quality on the geforce 6000 range.

As for this, only the "turbocache" nvidia cards do this, so no, no need to worry.

Parm, are you serious there?
I have atm a 9600 pro (Ati) and get in dual screen ~25fps, so does that mean it will work better or worse when the updated graphics hit?
P.s. Sorry for the hijack but I would also like to know this info as I want to do the same.......... At some point. Lets see if my sig can survive this round of *****ing

Oh, TurboCache sounded good, I guess I should've expected foulplay then... Anyway, if you say a GeForce 7300 will cut it, then that's good enough for me. Like I said I don't need the laptop for 200-man fleet battles, so I should be good? Anyway, the laptop I'm slowly narrowing my choices down to is the Acer 5611 AWLMi, and its specs are as follows: Intel Core Duo T2050 1 GB RAM GeForce 7300 128/256MB etc. So what does this 128/256MB business mean? If I got that right, it means it has 128 MB worth of dedicated memory which can be expanded by "stealing" some of the main RAM up until a total of 256 MB. Is that right and can this be controlled (I expect it can but I might as well make sure and despite my ok knowledge of hardware I know almost nothing of laptop-specific hardware...) ? Thanks again! --- High quality pics of ALL EVE ships!

The bottom-end 7300 might do it decently... but personally I'd never trust an absolute bottom-dollar card of any brand.

I'm not entirely sure on that one: could be that the manufacturers have done something with it do simulate 256, or some or majicks. I'm not sure about this one at all, sorry :P

Edited by: Ortu Konsinni on 08/01/2007 22:20:37 It's not so much a matter of trust as it is a question of whether or not it meets my specific needs; I think it will, but I'm trying to get that confirmed :)

It all depends on how you want to run the new graphics engine: i suspect there will be optimizations to make it run better on low end machines anyway, so if your card is capable, which it seems to be, it should run better (ofc unless you jack all the settings up or something)
That's more speculation now though; what I do know is that they are reducing the amount of cpu usage and dumping it on the gfx cards.

I have a Sony Vaio that can easily handle EVE the way you intend playing it. Can even run missions on it... or mine.
It uses "Mobile Intel(R) 915GM/GMS,910GML Express Chipset Family" for graphics. (No idea how that stacks up against Geoforce or what it means - I just copy/pasted it)

Go for a mid range. If you get a 7300, even though it's only one generation old, it's still slow and it will only beat the 9600 in drawing features, and come to think of it, the only thing it can probably do any better is SM3.0, because it's been standard for a while now. Get a mid-range, they are available, you just need to do some digging.
Infact, the ATI mobility range owns the market in terms of mobile cards, and has done for some time now (not sure about the newer Nvidia 8 series though). ---

anything that can run doom 3 on medium settings is probably way too advanced to support sound AND run eve at the same time.*

Does have anyone a list of proven compatible GFX cards for the new GFX engine?

I used to run EVE and even games like HL2 just fine on my old, old GF4 MX440, so basically anything that comes on a laptop nowadays should be able to cope (I would think) -----

Edited by: MalVortex on 28/11/2007 10:18:28 It should be a bannable offense to ever mention the FX line. There was no Geforce 5. Nvidia went on a 3 year holiday, ok?
That said, a GMA950 will definetley get you into a station, and probably simple tasks like mining or high sec travel. My el-cheapo laptop gets 25fps docked with a 6200Go, and it could def do highsec work if I wasn't on our schools terrible wlan.
Turbocaching is bad, mk? In theory it would be this awesome way to get tons of memory at no cost for your GPU, but in practice it sucks. It sucks up main memory for your gpu, with tons of latency (dedicated GPU ram is *fast*, going through the PCIx bus and into main ram is an eternity for graphics cards). Its definetley better than no dedicated card, but its not what your looking for.
7300gos would probably be too low. Low end cards (X3000, X4000, x5000) have too few pipes, too low clock speeds, and too little dedicated ram to actually run anything. What they do gain is things like SM3.0 and DX9.0 compatibility. They just cant actually execute anything in practice.
I'd shoot for a 7600GO, preferably an 8600GO or better. Those cards will have enough clockspeed and dedicated ram to play all of EVE without a hitch presuming the rest of the system is up to snuff.
Edit: For those who want to run the new models and textures (NOT the new engine):
You need a card with Shader Model 3.0 Compatiblity and Direct X 9.0C support. Any NVidia card 6 and up will have this, as will *probably* 1X000 cards from ATI. ATI older cards, despite having good performance, tended to avoid SM3.0 for some reason. 9800s, for example, wont load the new textures or models.
