Hi,
I just finished the Agony Unleashed PvP Basics class (amazing). Is anyone interested in a public non-bloody roam in Hisec? I was totally lost (and literally lost, also) when it came to following the FC instructions (ie, keeping up with the fast-talk, reading my overview- I didn't realize it could be set for alphabetical- yes, I was sucking). Here's my idea:
An experienced FC, a bunch of rookies, some asteroids to lock onto/scram/etc, maybe some experienced support, practice joining a fleet, using TS push to talk, reading the overview, aligning at a gate, holding at gate, remaining cloaked etc (the Agony Unleashed forum has such good reading material- and Jester made an amazing Fleet Communication guide,
Review appropriate fleet parlance, broadcast, and TS in general.
This might even be a good way to train for FC.
If this is already happening, please let me know how to join this activity. If you are in an Alliance, it would be a great way to recruit raw talent~

GUIZE WHATS A TITAN AND HOW DO I TAKE THE BRIDGE!
being an fc is a bit different to being in a fleet, calling primaries and making sure the fleet is not dying while also controlling your own ship requires a crazy amount of skill and focus.
Good news that you are trying pvp fleets can be very daunting the first time, you will mess up quite alot and different areas of space require a different style of fc'ing.
Good luck and hope you enjoy fleet fights in the future :)
There is alot of corps that offer this to rookies, some of the merc alliances can help you with this as i know they do like to help rookies getting into pvp and im sure they will show up here soon, most of them will supply ships aswell for you to die in

I don't know that anyone is really doing these sorts of "dry run" roams. They seem kind of pointless - if you are going to form up a PvP fleet, why not use it to PvP? The worst thing that could happen is you get killed and lose some imaginary spaceships, but even then you will have a better learning experience than you would from locking up asteroids and ****.
If you look into it, you will see that all of the large newbie friendly organizations in the game (Pandemic Horde, EVE University, Brave Newbies Inc, Karmafleet) run training fleets. These are typically for their own members (join one of them), but often you will see public roams for newbros advertised in this forum too. Usually these sorts of fleets do actually go out and try to kill things, in addition to training and practicing fleet behavior. Another thing worth clarifying is that any of these organizations will be fine with one of their members forming up their own fleets for whatever purpose regardless of whether you actually know what you're doing or not.

Thanks to all for the feedback. I suppose keeping it non-bloody (at least to start) helps with the primary task at hand and limits the pod death, reship, find fleet thing (good lessons, yeah).
Transitioning to null or losec after getting a feel for the timing and fleet comm faux pas would be ideal. But yeah, nothing like eating excrement to bring home a lesson.
I'll check out the suggestions. PvP is so fun, so complicated, so humbling, so humiliating... Etc
Thnx again. |

I like your idea but eve is game not real life,in real life you train in safe enviroment then go to dangerous but in eve its try after try death after death until perfection. If you like fleet warfare go to null especialy there you can find anything from 5 man fleets to 500 man fleets, "a good way to train for FC" actually good way to train fc is to give him fleet of 10 people with 8 dps t1 cruisers and 2 t1 logi cruisers and let him roam he will probably get his fleet killed few times but after some time he will get hang of it |

Pretty much just listen to a FC, pick the right gate, practice proper fleet comm. I don't mind going to nullsec or lowsec- I'm getting pretty good at being podded.
Contact me in game if you want to roam around.
Thanks!

If you wanted to try your hand out at a large scale fleet operation without the fighting you could try a large mining OP.
To successfully run a large mining fleet can be difficult and dangerous even in high sec. When you get a lot of mining ships in one system it tends to draw attention. Also trying to coordinate boosts and hauling ore effectively to get max yield is not easy if done right.
Then there is the whole issue of getting the ore sorted and payed out to everyone.
It could be challenging, profitable and a good learning experience. |

personally id try and learn how to fly a ship solo before jumping into fleets, learning to function a ship without anyone telling you will make it easier when people tell you, if you know what i mean

why bother with a dry-run?
Just get a bunch of mates together, jump in the T1 frigates of your choice and head to low or null sec.
The only way to learn PvP in EVE is to go out and PvP.
You will die. You will die A LOT. Accept that the ship you undock in is already lost and suddenly it becomes a lot more fun.

Telling people to align to a gate, hitting the fleet warp button then telling them to jump is easy, it doesn't actually require practice.
The things that actually matter are the ability of a fleet to form up properly, in a timely manner and in appropriate ships and then to go out and accomplish an objective against some kind of opposition. To that end fleeting up and flying around aimlessly won't actually accomplish much.
Like I said, if you're dead set on doing it in highsec you could go shoot suspects, or suspect bait yourselves. Other people in the thread suggested lowsec roaming, which is fine too but a bit more unpredictable. |

If you want to join a fleet to learn PvP, then join the "Spectre Fleet" channel in game, we run NPSI (Not Purple Shoot It) roams through Low Sec and Null Sec, and depending on the FC running the fleet you might get different bonus's, like me, I run SRP's for my Frigates roams, and sometimes on Cruiser roams depending on numbers and the like. We have lots of fun, get some kills and die as well, but it is always fun, especially learning to be a full FC.
So I get what you asking for in the OP, but it just isn't as effective as learning hands on, like last night, I did a 5 hour roam via Low Sec, and we had 2 newer players in fleet, one was one of our Tackle ships, and the other was a DPS ship, and they did great, they listened, and I didn't get them whelped! Which is always a plus, trust me, join the channel, it is where I learnt to PvP and where I spend most of my time now. You will learn faster, plus, having a fleet with 20 regulars, and 2-5 newer players, is better for everyone, means there isn't people yelling at the FC to teach them to do things, questions get answered faster, and you learn hands on in a fun and awesome environment.
Hope to see you in Spectre!

sounds like typical new player friendly corp stuff. If that isn't what your corp is into and it is what you want to do, maybe time for a new corp. Hell it should probably just be part of any group activity, and if you aren't ever flying with your corp mates why be in the corp

Yes , and I agree ^
Re the where of a "dream roam"- I meant a few jumps in High sec just to hear the instructions and act on them without much consequence- then to any sec.
Eve has been very much a "do to learn" experience for me - no shortcuts.
Re PvP ideas (Ace) , I'll check out the suggestions. Thank you, guys.
