I'm about to step into assault frigs tomorrow, and want to use them as additional firepower support for small 5-7man frig/cruiser gangs in 0.0, possibly with a secondary role as a heavy tackler.
What would be most appropriate? My missile and gun skills are roughly equal, in terms of frigate sized weapons.
Rail Harpy? Blaster Harpy? Missile Hawk? Rocket Hawk?

Hawk and Harpy with T2 gear are both very good gang support ships - it's really up to your own preference.
Blaster Harpy = very good DPS, limited on fitting (with neutrons) Rail Harpy = long range frig sniper (so not really suitable)
Rocket Hawk = even better DPS, easier fit Missile Hawk = longer range, better versus cruisers

I bought a Hawk last week (easy choice, no real gunnery skills, plenty in missles), and am quite happy with it. I've messed with both rocket and missle setups, both are viable but which you should choose really depends on the situation. More DPS off rockets but the range is a major pain in the ass. Rockets also make fitting easier, although the Hawk isn't a particularly hard ship to fit.

IMO both of these ships have specialized roles in a gang of that size and neither makes a good tackler. Either can do ok as a tackler with a close range setup but since neither is particularly fast there are certainly better options for tackling. Close range setups can be very frustrating as well since you can miss out on kills due to range and when you're close you're subject to all manner of nasty modules that a slow AF is poorly equipped to deal with.
I personally have found the Hawk to be a extraordinarily effective counter to hostile interceptors but the setup requires T2 standard missiles with bloodclaw precisions. With a sensor booster this ship can kill interceptors pretty much regardless of their velocity out to 50km (with good skills ofc). Also with a Small shield booster II and a passive EM hardner, this ship really tanks hard for it's size.
The Harpy is a decent light sniper. With the right skills, T2 rails and sensor boosters it can hit out to 100km and no pod is ever safe as it pretty much insta-locks anything. I don't have much experience flying this ship though, just been around them at gate camps a lot.
The secret to AF's IMO is T2 weaponry. Neither T2 rails or T2 standard missiles take long to achieve and I suggest you go for whichever one suits the ship you decide upon.

actually fitting a neutron harpy is easyer than fitting a 150 rail harpy and you can get 10km range and stay out of web range if you must with long range blaster ammo.
