Tranquility will undergo an extended downtime for database maintenance on Tuesday, 16 January. The extended downtime will occur from 1100 through 1500 GMT.
While the extended downtime is underway, we are asking for the community's assistance. As part of the ongoing effort to improve EVE's performance, we will be holding a stress test on Singularity and would like for as many members of the EVE community as possible to log into the test server. Once logged in, just play EVE as normal.
The test server will be running on the same version as Tranquility, so it will not be necessary to install a second client. We hope the server load during the stress test will help us troubleshoot some of the recent node issues.
It will not be necessary to set a long skill training for the extended downtime, but please ensure your skill training does not complete during the downtime.

New CCP policy: How do we make the paying customers into beta testers for us? Shut down the main server.

Ever defragmented your hard drive?
Similar thing. Every time you destroy an item (god kills a kitten) there is a 'hole' left in the database.
Soon all these holes add up.

Edited by: Radix Salvilines on 13/01/2007 23:12:00 Small suggestion to CCP. If u really want to attract dozens of players to EVE give each one on SISI for the time of the stress test all skills in EVE. Everyone will be able to fly a titan (while its cost will be only 100ISK). This way u will have more than enough peoples there :)
Besides... players would be able to anything, test anything. Sounds nice imho :)

New CCP policy: when the main server has to go down, give the players an event on the test server so they can still get their fix of Eve.

The problem with that is that they wouldn't test anything and everything. They'd all pile on there and test titans and other outrageous setups that they'd never usually be able to access, and not give any attention to anything else. Then they'd realize that titan vs titan combat gets very boring very quickly, and all leave again without testing anything else.
Besides, piling a thousand players on sisi to shoot something is very useful during a stress test, but would render sisi useless the rest of the time when the more routine testing needed to happen. ------- There is no magic Wand of Fixing, and it is not powered by forum whines. |

Bull. I pay to play, not be CCP's helper. When CCP wants me to waste my time on their tests, they can pay me for it. ________________

I want a better game, that's why I pay. It's not my job to fix the game, my job is to pay my monthly bill. It is CCP's job to do whatever it takes to provide me with the product I pay for.
Edit: By 'better game' I mean 'fix the bugs', I do not mean 'get new barely working content to attract even more lag producers'. ________________

Ya know, you don't have to log into Sisi to test.
Otherwise I'll say what everyone else is thinking...

I don't even play at that time, it is during my work hours. But that does not change the fact that shutting down the main server to force people to the test server is as low as CCP has gone so far (and one wonders how lower they will get). Your attempt at an argument would only be valid if the server did not coincidentally need "database maintenance' at the same time as CCP is looking for free beta testers.
And you don't have to read my posts, if you don't like them; ignore them, it's not very hard for any person with at least minimal intellect. It is well known among anyone with brains that 'STFU' is the universal equivalent of 'I don't like what you are saying but I don't have the ability to actually counter it'. ________________

Please don't take m$ retarded technologies as 'state of the art'. Serious filesystems & databases use Garbage Collectors and never ever need to 'defragment'.
As for the original topic : Pretty please add some hotfix for the mail bug, and I'm sure we'll be more than happy to come and help with stress-testing. |

This is just wrong. Oracle, probably the most production capable and used database system in the world for serious business applications can be affected by becoming too fragmented. I'm all for a little light hearted flame where flame is due, but at least do it when you know what you're talking about.
While I'm in the mode - I've said it before and I'll say it again - the biggest problem affecting people's enjoyment or ability to play the game is lag. Staying on top of that and more importantly focusing on one element at a time is what is and should be being done. Yes the mail bug is annoying, but it's not stopping you play the game once you clear your mail after logon.
EDIT: Missed a word...

A patch will not be published during the downtime tomorrow, a patch for remaining issues from the Revelations deployment, including the mail notification bug, will be released before the end of January.

You Sir are clueless. I'd be pleased to learn how the 'fortune 500' customers I had for the past 15 years (banks, insurance companies, telco/ISPs, manufacturers, ...) managed to achieve 5+ figures availability (i.e. 99.999%+ in other words, less than 8hrs average downtime/year) with their business critical application/databases if they had to stop their services regularly to 'defragment'. For the record, these backend DBs are not even used by a mere 35k concurrent users, but rather by millions of them daily. Guess what: none of them used m$ products for these applications, none of them complained about fragmentation.
Please, dont make the average JohnDoe believe it comes from technological limitations. Were CCP to be paid solely on effective game time, they'll implement high-availability policies and self-healing storage management. As you said yourself : Oracle _can_ be affected, but properly used, it is not.
BTW, I have no problem with CCP having daily maintenances as it's just a game: High availability comes at a price, and I'd rather see CCP make $$$ for their effort than give it all away. OTOH, I'll be glad to see them move to more robust backends if we want to enjoy our beloved game with more than 50-100k pilots at peak times, and let CCP leverage their effective clustering architecture without it beeing crippled with desktop/workgroup-class DB software. |
