I sometimes see wrecks with items in them. I've thought of looting them but don't want Concord to kill me. Is it illegal to loot another's kill? Thanks. |

If the wreck is blue you are free of consequence to grab it, if it is yellow you can grab it but you will go suspect (yellow). Suspect means players can shoot you but Concord will not attack. Concord only attacks if you go Criminal (Red). As long as you are quick about it, you should be fine. The suspect timer (as well as the criminal timer) is 15 minutes so you should make sure it is worth it to you to hide in the station or stay cloaked for that amount of time.
This explains the mechanics in detail and this explains the different timers you should be aware of.
It should be noted the safety comes into play here. You need to turn it to yellow to be able to grab from yellow containers. As long as you don't change your safety to red, the game won't let you do anything that will get you Concorded.

If you want to steal loot, remember to turn the green button to yellow ... ... and move toward a celestial to warp out ASAP once you clicked LOOT ALL.
I apologize for CCPs horrible idea of making stealing a profession that gives you a global flag.

The only ways you can get a criminal flag and subsequently get shot by CONCORD is to attack someone or something illegaly or remotely assist some who already has a criminal flag. You will never gain a criminal flag by looting.
If you have your safety set to anything but red (you should never have your safety set red in high security space unless you specifically intend to intentionally shoot somebody illegally and subsequently get blown up) the game won't let you do anything that will result in you gaining a criminal flag.
Wrecks and other containers are color coded. White containers or wrecks can be legally looted by you, blue ones are abandoned and may be looted by anyone, yellow wrecks are owned by others and looting them will result in you gaining a suspect flag, which will allow anyone to shoot at you for 15 minutes.
You can loot yellow wrecks all you want, just be aware of the other players around you when you do it as they may (it's not actually that likely) for them to shoot you. |

Op , don't travel with a suspect timer, any border mercs in the area will nab you and completely ruin your day.

I am not denying that, but discouraging lesser experienced players from stealing is - unquestionably - bad.
An LE towards the owner and his corp would be pretty fine in comparison.
But, in the end, it's all tied to that horrible security button.
Should I make a thread about it? :/

Sure, the wet dream of all gankers and can flippers. Well, maybe just shooting rights for them, then. :p
It would definitely be less discouraging.

OP first thing that you should know is that you have a safety and as far as I understand it if it is set to green you will not be allowed to do anything that would get you any kind of timer that would allow people to shoot at you. If you have it set at yellow you will be allow to get timers that would allow other players to shoot at you but you won't be able to do anything that would get you concorded. If you set it to red you can do anything including things that will get you concorded.
Also worth noting is that if you scan down other players in their level 4 missions and loot their wrecks you can easily loot more isk value than the ship that you are flying if you fly cheap ships. You could even do it in free noob ships thus risking nothing. I think that with level 4 mission intrusion there really is just not very much risk and a lot of potential reward. At least for very new players. More experienced players with some skill points under their belt could probably make more isk doing other things. |

Theft will give you a 'Crimewatch yellow card' (suspect flag).
This removes all of the unique protections highsec offers you for 15 minutes - basically making highsec into lowsec for you for 15 minutes.

Just an error in that - aggressing a pod unlawfully in lowsec is a red card, even if you fail to kill the pod.

It says if you kill the pod.
Aggression that fails to kill counts too.
