I have a pretty big ISK pool so yes, I can pay the collateral. I actually have enough money to get myself a Charon and still be able to pay it up. Hell, I could even get a Rhea if I wished. However, I'm hearing all this sh*t about CODE ganking freighters out of nowhere, scam contracts that suck up all your money etc etc. So should I consider being a space trucker? |

Sure, if you want. You don't even need a slow expensive hauler, you can do it with any ship you want.

Passing on the risk to the next guy is a good way of not losing a lot of money ... ... and you save the money wasted for the freighter.
If you haul it yourself, I hope not on this char.
About how much are we talking here anyway?

I wouldn't.
hauling for yourself or your corp is one thing. hauling for the public for peanuts is well probably not worth it. Although I have heard of people placing very low collateral on things so you might make some isk that way.
if you are going to sink that much in collateral you are probably better off hauling something and selling it yourself in the target system.

if you have the isk, millions or billion its usualy better to invest it in something with good returns, trading is definatly better with stuff people commonly sell. and if you moving stuff around (like say moving stuff from small hub to jita, or inter regional) you get to haul thing anway, which isn't realy fun.
Also if you have money for expensive collateral it would be best to use that for a freighter or fancy industrial, some of the specialized ones realy good at carrying allot real fast. |

Yes, please use an untanked t1 industrial and fill it to the brim with as much as you can.

Consider the following: Hauler fee for good "indie" contract is 400k per jump. Hauler fee for good "freighter" contract is 1,6m per jump. You can't get stable flow of good contracts. Your average contract will have collateral more than 200m. Freighter cost speaks for itself. |

Seems like a useless game mechanic then.

it is a very useful mechanic. I use courier contracts somewhat often and it is nice to get stuff delivered and typically not pay a lot to get it. However in the public courier realm there just aren't enough good contracts to really be worth it most of the time. I also usually pay a good rate so they get done quickly. Most of the ones that stick around are the scams or just not worth doing. Corp/alliance courier contracts are great, and then groups like red-frog which require you to pay a certain amount and limit collateral to make it worthwhile for their pilots.
imo there are too many costs and not enough rewards to make it an attractive offer, but plenty of people seem to do it.

Contracts are full of scams and bad deals partly because a lot of the legitimate, higher paying contacts are opened privately to haulers in game, picked up very rapidly after being advertised in a haulers channel or to services like red frog.
So just work with them or something. |

Ok serious reply now, hauling like most things in this game seems very simple on the surface but is actually somewhat complicated, assuming you want to make a decent profit.
Also like most things in this game, if you want to do a thing you should talk to the corps that are good at doing that thing. You don't need to join them if you aren't feeling it but just chatting in their recruitment channel is a good place to start learning and understanding what that thing you want to do is all about. The most appealing reason to try to join them, is the access you will receive to the knowledge and resources they have collected and or created.
The two largest would be a good place to start : Red Frog PushX

OP, with a name like yours, I would've thought hauling would be far too mundane for the likes of you. Wouldn't you be more comfortable shooting Nazis and monsters?

I don't know about shooting Nazis and mosters, but I think he'll tank ANYTHING by applying a lot of turkey on his ships. |

I generally consider hauling something of a chore.
There's many ways to make ISK in EVE and even more ways to be subsequently parted from it.
I know some space truckers who do logistics work for a major alliance. Keeping a great many Jump Bridge Towers fuelled and online takes considerable amounts of *effort* and the alliance rewards them well for their time spent doing such a mind-numbingly dull, repetitive activity.
Public Courier Contracts through HiSec are perhaps best thought of as an exceedingly high risk activity with, at best, meager rewards.

If you find you actually like flying a freighter... sure. For me -- and seemingly for most people -- it's an incredible chore.
Also, keep a webbing account up. Even then, be very careful. |
