You'll need to look at the agent info, every research agent has different skills. You need to have science V to do any research and also match one of their listed skills like "Graviton Physics" or "Caldari Starship Engineering" Prodesse Non Nocere

Also, note that even if their info tab says they need Mechanical Engineering III, for example, you just need Lvl I to start research with them. Also, if they list multiple scientific topics (eg, Mechanical Engineering and Molecular Engineering), you only need one of the skills to work with them.

And a few more details:
Most of the science skills require an additional prereq at level V, such as Mechanic for the Starship Engineering skills.
You can only work with one R&D agent at a time unless you train up Research Project Management (+1 R&D project per level). That skill has additional prerequisites of Research V and Laboratory Operation V.
The agent probably will not offer you a mission immediately. Sometimes it takes a couple of days before they ask for help. If you start a project and the agent does not contact you via Eve Mail after 3 days or so, go and talk to them; sometimes that "jump starts" things.
R&D agent missions provide an extra day's worth of RP rather than money and Loyalty Points as rewards. Also, they evidently do not contribute toward standings gains with their corp (I may be mistaken about that). They do contribute to your mission counter for Important Storyline Missions.

To add, an excellent improvement now is that you can buy "data cores" from the agent with your accumulated reshearch points.
So when you eventually dump the LVL 1 agent and move up, you can cash in and at least get a few data cores out of deal instead of just loosing the RP points, like the old setup was.

I contacted a research agent and he told me to come back later. Then I started to do research with that agent, will he contact me about missions etc. or do I have to finish the research first?

Agents are lazy, though. Sometimes it takes a couple of days before they offer the first mission. If more than three days go by, go and talk to the agent--I had one that either never sent a mail, or it got lost in transit somehow.
