Yeah I don't think many of us who use drones a lot are really laughing at this point. 3-year old bug, please spend some time on it. I'd rather see this bug fixed then more ships / content at this point, seriously.

Edited by: MrTripps on 21/01/2007 05:11:34 I expect that most drone complaints are based on the way users expect drones to work compared to how they actually work. Just like a mod in a high slot they have to be told what to attack. When I tell my drones to do something they do it. Left to their own devices...they try their best (bitting tongue). Drones have gotten better in the last few months. My biggest complaint with them now is getting them back in a hurry. Why is Scoop a command along with Return? Often you tell a group to Return only to have to Scoop the ones that were close. Why should there be two different commands to get a pack of drones back in bay? For example, I've been out with a pack of mining drones and had to call them in when NPCs show up. If I command them to Return only the ones at a distance will actually come back. The ones within range of Scoop just sit there like morons and have to be recalled with another command. There should be one command to get a group of drones back in their bay.

What is it that drones are supposedly doing or not doing? Granted, I have only been here 2 months, but I do not fit guns on my ship, I just use drones.
I have commited the double sin of Drone Nav V and I use a Drone Navigation Computer. I have the Link Augmenter fitted. I would fit the Omnidirectional if I could... I am still working out the details. All i have heard since I joined EVE was how aweful drones are, and how everything makes them worse. To date, I have yet to have a problem. Not a single problem... and I don;t fit guns, just use drones.
Maybe the Devs think you are funny because you don't have a clue what you are talking about.
For the OP, the behavior you describe sounds very much like you sent in your drones from one range, but then the target moved beyond your control range. Usually, mine will continue to follow the target, but occasionally, the will return home instead.
Having the drones fly past your ship and keep going after a recall order was issued is obviously lag. If it did not autocorrect after the lag passed, then the server never recieved your recall order, despite what your client may have shown. Otherwise, when it cleared, the drone that zipped past you would be in your hold.
Drones change target. They may or may not change target on at least the following conditions, there may be more. When you are first fired upon by another, when you begin firing upon another, when something fires upon them.
Please note they will evenly spread themselves, 3 and 2... then 2, 2 and 1... then 1,1,1, and 2... and finally, then 1,1,1,1, and 1. I have not noticed any target shifting after the final split without a target destruction.
After their target is destroyed, they seem to proceed along the above target change lines for a new target, splitting as above if more than 1 case exists.
Please note, this activity has nothing to do with your currently targeted foes, current active target, maxiumum target limit, or maximum targeting range.
My drones also have no trouble hitting targets, even hopped up medium drones with nav V and a nav computer firing on a frigate. They can hit them when they are chasing, and they can hit them when they orbit. heavy drones aren't very good at it when orbiting, but I have to figure that is probably designed that way, given that light drones are not very good at breaking a battleship by themselves.
As I said, I have seen a fair number of drone whines on the forum, and I have no idea why. They seem to function in a very controlled and predictable fashion. What problems are you claiming?

"Charge!"
.....10km before reaching target they all stop and look at each other and go "Joe, what are we supposed to be doing again?" "Gee Bob, I can't remember." "Hey guys, there's a frigate over here!" "Kill it!!!" "Charge!"
Now the battleship you were intending them to originally attack sits, laughs, finishes breaking your tank, and you get to buy a new ship (with more drones who get alzheimers regularly)

As a matter of fact, no.
This isnt the 1st time, 2nd time or 20th time I m experienceing this with my drones - and other issues. More like hundreds upon hundres of times have I seen this happen and quietly accepted their unruly behaviour through the years, but now it s enough - for sure.
This partcular sitation had the target at 60 clicks from my Dominix, equipped with 5x Drone Link Augmentors so they werent by a long shot outside their control range.
You know, coming back to this thread after seeing the yellow dev post marking at it only to find some yadda yadda we are funneh yadda yadda, really didnt suprise me much.
If you re going to comment to this thread, I expect you to have at some experience from the broad range of drones available to you and not the 6 month old caldari noob fielding light or med drones as a sidekick to take out frigs with.
And yes, this is an alt of my main. Unfortunately it got assigned as poster when I wrote the original post. My main started playing back in august '04 and have been relying on drones as primary dmg dealer since then basically.
I have 7m sp's in gunnery and 4m in drones and n e v e r use rails or blasters due to their ineptness to deal any substantial amount of damage. However, I ve arrived at the end of the road with drones now, my patience is over with them and I have started training for missiles instead, going for a Raven.

Edited by: Spenz on 21/01/2007 07:41:05 Ugh Im a drone user and all that is so ANNOYING! I tell them to attack a target 30km...THIRTY KILOMETERS...away. Of course they change targets just before they get there (its even more fun when your T2 ogres do it), and go after the weakest target. Of course you dont want them to attack the weakest target, but they do it anyways.
Even better are the hobgoblins and warriors, which decide on many occasions that they just do not want to go into their dronebay like good drones. Like naughty children, they stay 56 meters away from scoop range while your under attack. Why not just leave them? Well I use T2 drones, and at 500k a pop (for the lights...god help me when the hammerhead II's do it), I dont want to fling them around like they are nothing.
It was bad enough when they would stay out of scoop range, but now that they dont even attack what you want them too (could be worse I guess, like when in RMR they attacked your gang mate, or in exodus where they attacked YOU for remote repping them). ugh annoying.
[sarcasm] I bet the caldari dont have problems with their missiles switching targets or chasing after their own ship [/sarcasm]

Ok let me reiterate...Im a DRONE SPEC user (can use all drones including sentrys and Tech 2 heavies). Ive used drones ever since I discovered the light scouts and how cool they were. I ALWAYS have issues with disobedient drones. Ive used them all (including fighters...and they do the same things). Im lucky that at least regular combat drones actually MWD back to you. Logistics, EWAR, and fighter drones dont. Thats another bug that is really annoying.
After using all drones extensively, I have come to the conclusion that they are near hopelessly bugged and I would appreciate if they were debugged. I mean what good is a weapon system if you cannot rely on it in 99.99% of the situations your in 100% of the time?

Trust me... just because you didn't notice any problems, doesn't mean there aren't any. I envy you the fact, that your drones act accordingly.
The most annoying issues: - drones forgetting their order (like I wrote before, I think it happens when it takes too long for them to start executing it; ie. target's too far) - drones getting stuck together (happens when recalling) - last drone following the ship at a very slow and not recalling
The other thing that annoys me about drones is how they tend to aggro things in a mission. But I understand where that's coming from, so my complaint here is more of general philosophy design flaw, rather than a bug. A gun / missile user can pick targets off one by one (assuming they're not linked, and won't aggro all at once). A drone user 90% of times has to get full aggro before sedning in the drones.

To add a little point:
I have lost a Dominix because one of the drones didn't liked the aggroed target at 5 Km and decided that the other group at 20 Km was more interesting.
As that was word collide stage 2, I was happily killing the last angel at about 50% armor when a swarm of gistii (if I recall right) with webbing and scrambling frigates attaccked me.
Scratch a dominix.
This selecting targets that haven't attaccked you is decidely annoying.

Also Drone specialist, also brought a raven, with less than a million skill points in missiles its still easier and almost just as fast, while being considerably more safe, than the domnix that I spent years training to use. Ok, tier one and tier two BS I accept, but I can barley use the raven and its still more efficient. Please take some time to sit down and look at the drone boats, us drone reliant pilots could use some loving, in the time we have waited Caldari have had their weapon systems overhauled, Mimitar have been tweaked. We'd love something more than, you cause lag, and taking away half of our drone swarm.

To those of you saying "there is no problem, my drones are fine" can I point out that this problem is something that only affects certain people at certain times.
I never used to have any problems with drones, they always did what they were told, they used MWD to return, they stayed on target, they behaved themselves. Conversely my brother had huge drone problems. His drones would randomly change targets, they would refuse to return to bay, they would generally act like delinquent youths on drugs.
Then suddenly, about 2 months ago my drones started doing exactly the same annoying things. Nothing changed in terms of my skills, my ships, my drones or my PC yet now my drones will NOT do what I tell them to. I now have to repeatedly tell them what target to attack. Every 20 seconds I have to re-tell them or they wander off and attack something else. I have to order them to attack something near me and then return to bay to get them to come home. I have to wait ages for them to return because the WILL NOT use their MWD to return any more.
I have been a drone user for 3 years now, I know how drones work, I'm experienced in using them, it's not something I'm doing wrong, it's a collection of highly annoying bugs.
So yeah, *you* may not have any trouble with them, but don't be certain that it will always be that way or that others don't have real problems.

Poor poor misunderstood drones. Support the drone uprising TODAY!
Considering that we pwned you in the war, you live next door to us and that most of our navy is just drones, what do you think would happen to caldari space if we totaly lost control of the drones?
If they overran you we'd ally with them :-). Besides that war was ages ago, militarily things have changed big time. We have the majority of the pod pilots after all.
Yeah... caldari got fat and soft... dont ever ever ever ever pretend that the caldari pilots of eve flying caldari crap could win now.... ever... missles hit always which is bull**** but other than that caldari get owned always.
Being the noob/carebear race is good in high sec or for 0.0 carebearing but it will bite you like a ***** come time for a fight. Some pilots shake this off with good specialized skills... but then again most good pilots arent caldari...

Why would you need 5 drone link augs for a Dominix, BTW? I must be missing something. Even with lower drone skills and some extenders to targeting range, I cannot think you would need more than 2. Maybe there is an issue in stacking the link augs? I have never had need for more than one.
My race is obvious, and my exact weapon useage was stated.
------
Switching targets is , also, obvious and previously stated. Even exaggerated, it is a poor example, as if the ~10 seconds the drones spend chasing down and destroying a frigate decide the battle, then you should have warped away already. Even a medium ammount of attention would allow you to reissue the order to attack the Battleship.
------
Are we discussing PvP or PvE? Drones are listed everywhere I have ever looked as very short ranged weapon systems for local ship defense. That we can rat using them at long range as our primary weapons systems says more to the general weakness of rats than the abilities of drones. In PvP, this sounds like something akin to loading Iron Ammo into some blasters and complaining about the results. The examples seem... odd... is the polite word to use for it. Clueless Noob |

Ok, so maybe every other type of ship should have to fit a mod that makes their weapons usable too.
We don't want a OMG I win button, but the Dominix, the Vexor, the Ishtar, Ishkur and carriers main offensive systems fixed, to a point where they feel viable, if they were never intended to be viable why create ships which rely on drones?
Can I **** around with your weapon systems so you cant hit anything further than 45km from you without sacrificing a high slot, so that you are constantly losing them whenever you warp out, and they randomly decide what they are going to attack, agroing entire pockets in missions, or spreading their damage over half a dozen targets in PvP?

painnnnnnnnnnnfully stupid.
"oh by the way guys, your guns will randomly swap targets at the least opportune moment, FPS lag will mean you dont see they have swapped target for at least 3 seconds, then a further 7 seconds is spent before your guns even start moving back to target what you asked. and anyone within 40km of who you shoot will come thump you too. oh, and you need to fit this module which may make them behave properly. if youre lucky."

I have a temporary solution.
Turrets and Missile Launchers, even though activated on proper target, will have a 10% chance to switch targets. It will also take anywhere from 1-4 taps on the F1-F8 buttons before the corrisponding module is activated.
Yup, think that should even things out a bit...

The "Engage Target" command has a relatively short duration. If the drones can't close range and commit before that time expires, they revert to their default uncommanded behavior, which is to pick a random target from their list of targets that have done bad things to the drone itself or their owner and go from there.
If you are sending slow drones far away, repeat the command when they are about halfway there.

hmm if only drones could be commanded with a button tap (or shoot command) but nooo we have to work with right-click menu's to get our drones to do anything. compulsory right-click menu's ftl However, I still think EvE needs more and better tactical warning sounds.
