When to use sentry drones? I have never used them.
How is their tracking? Can I bring them into L4's to shoot down frigates and cruisers instead of using light/medium drones? They are also stationary so how do they track if something comes close to them? I'm training my drone skills right now to supplement my Hyperion damage in L4's (getting bored with Tengu, want to make use of a BS) which can field a full flight of sentries.
So basically; why choose sentry drones over the other drones?
Thanks!

Sentry drones are basically heavy drones that trade all mobility for range.
At extremely close ranges, they are really only good against battlecruiser and battleship NPCs (due to poor tracking).
At range though (we are talking 30+ km out) they can nuke almost anything making a beeline towards you.
The general tactic behind sentry use in missions is to grab aggro and Microjumpdrive away... deploy sentries then pick off the NPCs (starting with frigates).
Gardes (thermal) deal the most raw damage and have the best tracking. Wardens (kinetic) have the highest range. Bouncers (explosive) and Curators (EM) fall somewhere between the above two.

Sentry drones are exactly that, heavy drones. They do move, but approx one half a meter a second. They abide by all the same rules as normal heavy drones. But because their range is so much higher they will start shooting as soon as you give the command rather than flying to the target; and they will miss if their relative angular is too high. But unlike normal drones, with sentries, tracking problems are usually due to the target moving too fast around the drone rather than the drone moving too fast around the target.
Drone stats are a bit of a ****, to get reliable figures you need to open the info window for one that is still in your drone bay whilst undocked and any modules you plan to use with them running. Anywhere else will give unreliable/inaccurate figures.
If brute force isn't working, you're just not using enough.
Please Note: Any advice given comes with the caveat that nothing will be suitable for every situation.

To answer the question about missions. Yes, the Sentry Drone battleship is extremely common for L4's. The Rattlesnake with an MJD is very good. Sentries will usually knock down frigates as they burn directly at you. If they get too close recall/abandon the Sentries, deploy lights till the small things are dead, then go back to the Sentries. You could also use an Ishtar. They aren't the almighty hammer of god that they were for awhile, but properly fit they will chew thru L4's. |

Sentry drones are great for any level 4 mission. And it is not just the typical drone boats, like the Domi kind [Domi and Navy Domi], but also some ships you might not consider like the Hyperion, Phoon, and Fleet Phoon. On the former they are are the main damage dealing weapon so you will want to fit DDAs and Omnidirectionals along with a couple DLAs. On the latter they are supplemental and good for blapping small stuff as your main weapons take care of the heavy ships. For this a painter can help, but it doesn't make sense to fit the drone damage or tracking mods. Still it is advisable to fit a DLA if you have a utility high because the extra range helps you blap the small stuff before the sentries have trouble tracking them.
Heavy drones are excruciatingly slow. They plod from one target to the next. With sentries you can micro jump drive away, deploy them, and snipe the rats burning toward you. Becomes almost boringly easy. Time to not care about triggers in the blockade just to make it interesting and have to rep.
In pvp sentries have utility as well. However, I have been on an extended break from pvp due to the ever present possibility of wife agro. Cant be on comms anymore, so back to missions. Thus I really cant speak to whether the sentry Ishtar is still a thing even after the series of nerfs. But sentries have other pvp uses like gate camping or whatever.
Long and short of it is train them before heavy drones. Unless and until CCP makes heavies less of the cows that they currently are. Or unless you somehow have found a theatre of pvp where they make sense. |
