Well folks I've decided to cancel my Eve subscription.
I'm making this post for no other reason than to explain to some really great friends why.
I'm a 35 year old married man with a 9yr old son and a beautiful wife. I'm also unable to do anything by halves, so when I play an MMO I really really play it. 4 hours a night (plus) nonstop to the exclusion of everything else. I'm not able to play from time to time, and dip in as a light hearted passtime - it becomes a huge part of my life.
MMOs provide an escape from reality, and the danger for me is that the more I play an MMO, the more appealing it becomes. Who cares if I can't get up for work (and when I get there my brain is fried) because I'm up every night till 2am, my career may suffer, but my career as a merc is going great! Who cares if my wife has to look at the back of my head all night while I ignore her with a headset on, we have a contract to negotiate and 30 corp members relying on me to do the right thing (so who needs a sex life!). Basically (due to my addictive nature, not blaming anything else here) the escape becomes more appealing and important than the reality, and when you're playing to escape, the problems you are trying to escape from get worse. It's a vicious cycle.
This year, something has clicked in my brain.
It's time for me to stop investing so much time and effort into a pixellated escapism avatar, and to put some of that effort and time into me and the people around me who deserve it - friends, family, my wife and son. This wasn't a conscious decision - I didn't wake up and think "I'll quit Eve and EQ2". I just realised it wasn't what I wanted anymore.
Some of you have been flying with me for nearly four years, and I've really, sincerely enjoyed the ride. I'm glad we could meet, join together and create some brilliant times. I've made friends (and enemies) all over the world, something I would never get the chance to do without Eve, and I am eternally grateful for that.
From the bottom of my heart - thankyou CCP. You have made the game that (if I had any skill, talent or ability) I'd have made myself. Your relationship with the community and your passion make this an incredible experience. I have loved it for 4 years longer than any other game I have played. I can't stress enough what a good job you do. Absolute top drawer stuff.
I've mothballed my personal fleet (you can't have my stuff!) but I have named a corp Nidhoggur the TNS Tyto. I'd be honoured if that name was to continue causing terror and inflicting defeat on those that oppose my brothers-in-arms. Don't be over-protective of her chaps, I envisage dents and scrapes and burns - let the name Tyto reap a bloody harvest long after I've gone.
I'm still going to be on the TNT forums register there if any of you should want to stay in touch.
Take care everyone, fly well and die hard.

I still remember huola so very well. I actually laugh when I think of you and the rest of PFM killing that amarr guy and directing him to me :)
You guy's were a class act and in you they are no doubt losing an important member of their corp.
Would have been nice to shoot at you again though... -----------------------------------------------

Ah Huola, that was a lot of fun. It was named the 'Breacher 100', we built 100 breachers and we decided we weren't going anywhere till we'd lost the lot. The dry runs with gangs of 4 or 5 breachers all armed with rockets with good rocket skills... god the noise alone was terrifying. The outrage on the forums was great Linkage.
That, and the mails I received when the PFM laid mines at the gates in Amarr and started making announcements in local... the best times for me in a RP sense. We were just trying to kick start some of the amarr/minnie RP as it got a little stale imo, the length of that thread says we had some success :).
I can't tell you how pleased I am to know that I had some small part in making your Eve experience richer and more fun Bokudo, I know you and all the amarrian RPers had a huge part to play in mine - please pass on my thanks to Gaius, Golan, Solusar, Sid and the lads (in case they don't see this thread).
As for coming back, never say never, but it doesn't feel likely this time. I've taken breaks before, and have been semi-inactive the last month or so, but this feels different.

Sorry to hear your leaving the game mate. But RL must take priority. I've played Eve now for nearly 3 years and at times i get bored with it. Spending a few days or several weeks break though changes my mind and a come back, time permitting, cos it is addictive.
Been a pleasure Tyto, didn't get to know you as well as i might, but i'll still see you and the guys on the forums and Vent, take care.

Edited by: Tyto on 28/01/2007 17:42:01 Solusar, we're arranging a get together and I know you're not a million miles from us. There are some fellas coming down from your neck of the woods, so get on our forums and get your bad self down. Hmmm, would you feel safe with the ex-PFM pilots in a pub... seriously, it'd be great to see you.
Get on the forum here.

PS that goes for anyone who fancies it to be honest, we've got some folks coming from Sweden, curry a few beers and a night of eve-talk!

I thought about quitting when my fiance started making noise about my time spent playing Eve. But in the end, I just decided to get her playing, too. There's nothing like upping the dosage. _
