So is this movie as good as all the rave implies? I've been waiting for movies about the new world that hasn't got cowboys in it.
Or is it just as lousy as the movie called New World with the no talent assclown Colin Farrell?

From what I've heard it's a brutally nasty as Passion of the Christ was and, as much as I enjoy a good violent film, Passion was just too relentlessly nasty for even moi __________________________________

One of the best movies I have seen in a while...total change of pace. Very witty in parts and the last part of the movie is just great...it is quite nasty tho

I'm guessing it's transmitting 'family' rays then.
Don't say it's anything like Passion of the Christ!

As an action movie, it is outstanding. Lots of chases and sudden impalements. Special effects, all the blood sprays and an arrow headshot that will make you wince (OUCH!), etc are really cool.
Plus you get to see an atlantl in action. Not many movies can boast that!
Historically however, it fails - the writers obviously didn't care in what order the Mayan collapse, arrival of the Conquistadors and smallpox took place, and the full-screen full moon on the night after the solar eclipse just made me want to throw popcorn at the screen. Not to mention the solar eclipse unfolding in a matter of minutes - takes hours, you nubs (although the scene in question wouldn't work without that distortion), but at least they got the illumination spot on.
There are sooo many comic moments early on. It opens like a comedy.
And an important note - contrary to rumour, the movie has nothing to do with the actual collapse of the Maya.
To sum up, it is worth seeing, the same way that a Mad Max or Blade movie is worth seeing. The actors, camera crews and SFX guys did a great job, but the editors need to be sacrificed.

not historically accurate. but a good movie. some native American groups were mad about it. but that is because they like to avoid the we killed each other too type deals.

Personally I didnt like it at all. The story really wasn't too interesting, the violence didnt really have too much point (in most cases I found it to be borderline comedy). That, and the key moments were just way too cheesy.
To put it simply, my friend and I were apologising to each other for suggesting the film as we went out. --

The interesting thing is that it's about human sacrifice in the Mayan Empire during the sixteenth century, especially when you realise that the Mayans went into terminal decline in the twelfth century, and weren't all that big on human sacrifice.

Im pretty sure it was about the Aztecs. They were the dudes that sacrificed like 1000 people (seriously) per day, and one of the reasons going into decline was the rapid population lowering... Go figure
I liked the movie btw, I founded it brilliant.

I think the aztecs sacrificed their captured enemies en masse and not so much their own people. They did sacrifice their own people on special occasions, say harvest time but they werenŠt queuing them up for it.
When I was younger I read every book on aztec culture but I havenŠt kept up with the latest discoveries
I enjoyed the movie, itŠs visually stunning and I liked the storyline. It makes little sense if you know a bit more about the culture though (example an eclipse wouldnŠt have come as a surprise to them as their calander was rather advanced).
The main character is pretty cute too.
Why is this signature pink?
It is a mystery

I think it was on IMDB that I read that the movie is in the language of some group on the Yucatan Peninsula. But it is subtitled.
Don't let that put you off though, it's a decent action movie. Just ignore the noob astronomy and the fact that the writers cherry-picked all the sensationalist societal characteristics from the whole continent and placed it in the wrong century with cause and effect screwed up.

I liked it, as long as you don't take it too seriously like some people in this thread did its enjoyable.
Violence was ok but the jaguar bit added nothing to the plot and was over done for no apparent reason.
As for historical accuracy, when the hell as a hollywood movie been historically accurate??

Tbh, i thought it was a top notch edge of your seat action movie. very well done, i pity the people that had to pick up on the eclipse mistake and other tiny errors. your life truely must have no meaning for you to put down a good film becuase it isnt perfectly to the facts.
The violence was very well done and realistic, a refreshing change from the simplified violence in some films and the retarded slashfest of others. it was used only when necessery and alot of it was implied.
The Only gripe i had about the movie was i feel the scene with the wierd girl with the pox chatting rubbish about some prophecy, necessery and didnt fit totally in.

Having pursued an interest in amateur astronomy for a number of years, owned a telescope, seen a few eclipses, and been drawn to EVE because of my love of spacy stuff, I think you are missing the point.
And if I don't notice the historical errors, why did I bother showing up to history class for 7 years?
Not to mention the fact that I said I liked the movie in spite of the numerous errors.

Is it really necessery to say "good film, but this, this and this is not historicly or scientificly accurate" no one really gives a ****. i honestly read IMDB forums and i wince, it seems everyone is now a film critic or a expert in whatever, these people are thieving my oxygen.

Imagine you were watching a film about baseball that played in the 1950s and instead of 4 bases they have 5 bases. Would that bother you?
If not, good for you. But if it does, then that wouldn't be any different from what you are complaining about. --- The Advanced Drone Control Panel. |

Because I know those things, and have experienced some of them. In the same way that Field of Dreams would have attracted a bit of comment if it had turned the baseball diamond into a hexagon - ask anyone who has ever played baseball to keep quiet about it. Or a pilot saying no way in hell can you perform a certain manoeuvre in a given type of aircraft. I do not set aside my education and cultural background as though unplugging an implant when I am sitting down to watch a movie.
Alas, this is the industry's expectation these days.
Well too bad for the bosses - Apocalypto has good SFX but they got the astronomy and the chronology wrong. It didn't diminish my enjoyment of the movie, it probably won't diminish yours, but as an astronomy enthusiast and someone who was awake in history class, I will comment.
