CCPlease: Would be nice to (eg. Ctrl+) click a point on the tactical overlay and ship to head there, keeping the Z coordinate. Or ideally, similar to the new DD weapons, where you first have the X,Y then you set the Z coordinate. Double-clicking in space can be dificult when you want to go a certain distance too.
At least as pointing direction. Creating paths would be awesome...
Thank you. |

Only horizontally? My only concern is selecting where you want to go in 3D space |

3D would be easy, you press the waypoint hotkey on the tactical overlay and it creates a waypoint at your cursor, then you adjust its height/depth and click to finalize. When next you tell your ship to accelerate by clicking on the throttle in the HUD, it moves toward the waypoint. If you double-click in space it will ignore the waypoint and you'll have to re-acquire it as a heading by opening the tactical overlay and right-clicking the waypoint to open a menu.

Frostys Virpio: "We have to give it to him that he does put more effort than the vast majority in his idea but damn does it sometime come out of nowhere."

The tactical overlay actually becoming a real tactical overlay would be amazing. Especially with the larger grids. Though we have to consider that under the current engine, if you can align to it, you can warp to it if you are far enough away. And ask if easy on grid warping is a good or bad thing for tactics. Obviously minimum warp distance could be changed, & these could also be just visual points that you would have to use manual piloting to direct yourselves towards rather than points you could approach/orbit/align on also. |

By this point its too complicated to be used in battle. I guess the next question is why this would be necessary? |

Play Homeworld. A 3d waypoint setting system is easy and intuitive in how it works when done well. As for necessary. Why is anything past rookie ships and civilian guns 'necessary'.
A real tactical overlay however gives FC's far more options, and involves individual players a lot more if instead of FC's being able to take control of the fleet they instead can designate waypoints for their fleet. Especially if you can pass information down the tree therefore involving the WC's and SC's as well in this command structure.
Allowing for more significant on grid tactics rather than just blobbing even in a large fight. Planning a pincer movement while keeping the enemy fleet bubbled to catch kiters by using a waypoint on the far side to warp half your fleet to for example (Though obviously, minimum warp distance would need a large increase to avoid this becoming too easy to do if you could warp to waypoints).
We have huge grids now, lets actually make systems that allow us to take advantage of that easily without needing snaked boosted kiters. |
