the recent post on eve reddit about apple trees in null sec apple trees got me thinking of what I believe would be a very interesting mechanic around mining outposts involving stealing the ore inside. I was never a fan of the siphon units because I feel they were to easily mitigated and also required the thief to return to the scene to collect his goodies.
Like all new structures I have no doubts that mining outposts will get vulnerability timers to be destroyed/conquered whatever. I propose they have a smaller timer within that timer when they can be hacked using the data analyzer and playing a beefed up version of the existing hacking mini game. Unlike the current version where iirc you have three chances before your loot blows up, against a mining outpost you only get one shot. Success and you can loot up to 30% of the silo, and no one ever knows you were there. Failure however is where it gets interesting.
Should you fail the hack the outpost defends itself by applying the Venus Fly Trap, a hic scram and a 99% web effect on the offending ship that lasts for 10 minutes. It also sends the owning Corp a mail allowing them to investigate and blap the hapless thief, if they can form in 10 minutes. And if the thief has friends well then PVP happens.
The system encourages occupancy because repeated failures to respond to hacking attempts on your mining outpost will seriously dent if not eliminate your profits nothing to stop you from getting hacked three times in an hour. To compensate that though the hacking needs to be hard as balls for example with max skills and optimal play hacking an XL outpost should have a MAX 50% success rate. 60% large 70% medium 80% small.
EDIT: I'm sure there is a butter zone that balanced it being trivial to hack and there being significant risk of being caught as well as an incentive to not use throwaway frigs. The hacking difficulty as well as the success yield can be tinkered with as needed. |

10 minutes is a very long time, and the absolute immobilizing seems too overpowered. |

I would love for there to be a module that immobilises threads from Reddit and prevents them from jumping into the EVE Online forums

I dunno, I'd probably go for it. Cyno is 15. You're hacking and swiping someone's stuffs. 10 min is reasonable. I'd be OK w/ 15minutes. |

I'm not even the OP of the thread I linked. Some people use Reddit, others don't, I simply linked the thread so anyone else that was curious could check it out, as it's relevant to my topic.
If anyone has any holes they can poke through my idea if love to hear them |

Cyno is 10...
CCP should add more NPC 0.0 space to open it up and liven things up: the Stepping Stones project.

since you guys mention the cyno i wouldnt be terribly adverse to the venus fly trap effect also producing a cyno, but not sure many people would be foolish enough to blind jump caps just to gank a random pos thief, and even if they had eyes in the system would want to burn the fatigue. However The thought of some nullbear blind jumping dreads onto a mining outpost to gank someone stealing thier moongoo and getting counter dropped is extremely amusing. |
