Hello there,
I've been casually running distribution missions in an attempt to increase faction standing. Currently working on Caldari standing but will move on to Amarr and the other two at some point down the road. However, frustratingly, for the second time in a row now I've received a storyline mission for a corporation that isn't the one i'm running missions for (And is also a security mission to boot, which i've had to decline,) and i'm considering doing the Data Center missions now to speed up the process.
I'm aware of Data Centers and what is required to run them. I've done them a few times in the past on other characters. What I don't know but have always been curious about and what i'd like to learn, is exactly how the Data Centers increase your standing.
Does it matter what my current faction standing is (Is it a fixed gain regardless of my standings?), or would I see better results with a higher faction standing?
Should I run them now with 1.45 Caldari standing or wait a few weeks until my faction standing is (Hopefully) significantly higher? |

Those missions are like any other storyline, so it's all about diminishing returns.
The standings increase is a function of how much you have remaining to 10.0, so the higher your standing the lower your absolute improvement. In other words, do 'em sooner rather than later. |

Everything is true until your last line. That, I'm afraid, is not how diminishing returns work.
Let's say you have a single 50% increase available and an infinite supply of 5% increases.
Case the first. You take the 50% increase right off, raising a 0 standing to 5. How many 5% increases would it take to get you to 9.9? Well, 77 as it turns out. For standing of 9.903686401, more or less.
Let's flip it. Do 77 5% increases first, leaving you at 9.807372802. Then you take the 50% increase. Where do you get? 9.903686401.
Order doesn't matter one bit.
Edit: have a spreadsheet model. |

I believe the point may have been that doing it sooner gives you a bigger initial boost, so you have high rating sooner, even if the end result is exactly the same. |

That's what I meant but thanks to Zhilia anyway for the maths. I suck at maths. I shall endeavour to refrain from using big maths terms like "diminishing returns" in the future! |

You may need to move to a different regular agent if you want a different storyline agent (Dotlan is your friend along with some of the agent lookup 3rd party websites).
Be sure to read Faction Standing Repair Plan.
P.S. You're aware that raising standings with one faction will lower standings with opposing faction, right?

So to summarize, i'll see the biggest results if I do the Data Centers immediately...I'll probably do them as soon as I've got Social trained to V.

Yes I am aware of all of that, but this corp seems to be a bit weird. Usually I get Storyline missions from an agent with the corp i'm running missions for (Expert housing) and then occasionally i'll get them for Expert Distribution, even though I haven't changed the system or the corp since I started with level 1's...I'll double check Dotlan to see whats going on, because it's quite annoying.
Thanks for all the help everyone o7

Just a quick update after running both Amarr and Caldari Data Centers last night, for anyone that may be interested...
4 days ago this character had no standings whatsoever.
Day 1
Made the decision to get him to 5.0 + faction standing with Amarr and Caldari.
Trained Connections up to level 3.
Completed a single level 1 distribution mission for Expert Housing > Connections raised my standing with that corp to ~1.20 so that I no longer had to grind through level 1's.
Moved straight into level 2's.
Proceeded to run level 2's until a storyline mission was offered.
Completed storyline mission, gained a small amount of faction standing > Connections raised that faction standing to ~1.20.
Day 2
Continued missioning for Expert Housing. Completed multiple storylines. Gained more faction standing.
Day 3
Still grinding away. Got 2 storylines in a row from a different corp (One of which was a security mission,) which I declined. Caldari/Amarr faction standing was at ~1.70 at this point. Felt like I wasn`t getting anywhere so I started to consider doing the Data Centers early and came here for advice.
Was advised by you fine folks to run the Data Centers sooner than later.
Day 4
Went to Jita
Spent ~800 mil on the necessary pirate tags.
Went to Data Center systems. Completed missions. (This took all night, as some extra missioning was required.)
Amarr and Caldari standings jumped from approximately 1.70/1.80 to 4.99 and 4.87 respectively.
The 1-5 exploration career agents in Deepari and Uitra were enough to push standings up to 5.10 and 5.02.
The Data Centers were slightly more finicky this time than they were in the past. I did have to run about 20 more level 3 distribution missions for Ministry of War and Home Guard because I didn't have high enough standing to access the level 4 Data Center agents after completing the level 3 agents.
Otherwise, I'm very impressed. Even having done the Data Centers before on other characters, I dont think I've ever seen such a large standings increase before...but maybe I say that every time.
Regardless, my objective has been completed in record time.
Thanks again for all your advice o7 |
