So I've spent a few of months skilling up and farming ISK, learning pvp tactics etc. But the more I play the less excited I get. I'm basically wondering if eve really is a game for me.
All pvp I have seen so far, has been all about veterans in more expensive faction/T2 ships ganging up on lone new players in cheaper ships. I thought perhaps I could find somewhat balanced and fun pvp in FW by going into novice/small plexes, but all I get are veterans checking out what I fly, and then they bring counters to my ship and ofc 3-4 friends. I have no other choices but to warp out and get no LP/pvp, or fight a fight where I at most can bring down one other guy with me. To me thats not fun in any way tbh.
Is there really any fun pvp in eve to be found? Am I looking at the wrong places? (And by fun I mean, somewhat balanced, where you stand the risk of loosing and chance of winning). I'm not interested at all in joining a corp where you just gang up on ppl who stand no chance either. So far I think I have had one single fair/fun fight that was not 1v5, out of, idk 30-50 fights. So at the moment I'm spending countless hours grinding and having pretty much no fun pvp at all. |

While fair fights do happen, to be real the majority of PVP in EVE is definitely like you described. Not so much the 'veterans', but in general eve PVP is pretty much about countering.

picking fights you can win and running from everything else is the most important skill in eve (small scale/solo) pvp. Thats what you need to learn first, meaning a lot of lost ships in process. Once you figured it out, the success is rewarding as in no other game by far. |

i just saw your kb and most of your deaths are 1v1 and not much enemy blobing, so i don't know what your op is on about. EVE is an MMORPG, your enjoyment will increase when you have friends to play/blob with. even a veteran will die if he is outnumbered.
my point is, this game is much enjoyed when playing with others, so find and join player corp.

whats the point of this post ?
This is a sandbox game, where limited rules of engagement apply, when it concerns destroying other players ships.
War has always been, & will always be about counter & who has the most units on the battlefield. This applies to how pvp works in EVE online. If you decide to play like Rambo... thats your choice, you have then choosen to limit the odds against you.
EVEBoard ...Just over 30million skill points, each skill was chosen for a reason. I closed my eyes & clicked another skill to train... "BINGO...!!!" ... "This time i got something usefull"

Hey all!
First off, thanks for all replies! Didnt expect any responses so fast! =)
SKINE DMZ Ahh that was my fear. But when you go fleet vs fleet, are those fights less onesided? I dont want to know beforehand that my fleet are guaranteed to win or vice versa. I want the excitement from close fights where any side can win.
Mark Hadden That is pretty much what I do, for ever fight I fight, I have probably warped away from 10 or so fights where I most likely would stand no chance at all. So that part Ive got the hang of! Warping out from certain death or fighting with close to zero chance of winning is pretty much all i've seen so far though! :P
Nat Silverguard Yes that is true, I have quite a few 1v1 as well, but in almost every case they are coming at me with T2 or faction frigate or destoyers if im flying a T1 frigate. So 9 times out of 10 I just warp out. Perhaps it is possible to win despite the odds but considering I'm a noob I dont see that happening! :P And also in alot of those fights, they have had backup, it's just that I dont survive long enough vs T2/faction ships in my T1 for their backup to arrive. It's allways the same group of players who try to bait me into 1v1 and once im tackled it turns into a 1v4 instead.
Big Lynx Not sure what you mean there? :P
Celise Katelo The point of the post was me wondering if the majority of pvp in eve are fights where one side really have a huge advantage all the time. So far thats pretty much all I've seen. I don't get really excited about being on the other side either, for me there is no fun if I'm almost guarateed to win. I dont have to go rambo as you put it. :P My plan was to join a corp but if the pvp is to gang up on easy targets I might not put more time and effort into eve tbh.
Negasonic Teenage Thats what I'm doing at the moment, or well, atleast the skulking around in something cheap part. But regarding the suprise butt relations, I'm allways on the reciving end lol. :D Is it possible to take down T2/faction frigates in a T1?
Sneaky Little Bastard Well I have gotten a few kills, but not all of them where too exciting tbh. :P Had a condor vs condor fight once though that was really fun though! I want the fights to be able to go either way!
Thanks again for all info guys, Im not going to give up just yet! |

Eve PVP regardless of the theater in which it occurs (space, market trading etc.) , - but in your case ship based pvp is generally about premeditated, outright murder. Through what ever means possible trying to outsmart and out maneuver your prey. If you find yourself in a 'fair fight' with equal numbers, odds are very likely someone has made a horrible (or funny) mistake.
As a result, you're unfortunately coming to eve with the wrong expectations. Set within a cold, harsh, unfair universe, the ship based pvp here isn't about fun or lol-esport but survival by almost (within bounds of the eula) any means at your disposal. Now IF you find that kind of pvp 'fun' too?! That's great. Particularly if you enjoy the rush of surviving a fight where the odds were not in your favor and you survived with only a few points of hull and some burned out modules.
To be fair, there is / are exceptions to this general state of ship based pvp. At least once yearly there are the alliance tournaments in which players engage in structured pvp matches. You can watch them via youtube. |

The trick to having a good fight in EVE is almost always having a "surprise factor" to even the scales. It can be a whole range of things - unusually large tank, extra high DPS, surprise ewar/neuts, unexpected friends, etc. etc. This can be contained within your solo ship or spread among the fleet. But you have to have something unexpected, or the enemy will just counter you easily.
Just yesterday I had a very fun small gang fight where we outnumbered the enemy 3:1 and still got stomped. It was very close and we nearly walked away with an ISK-win but ended up without a kill at all. Out of about 10 minutes we were fighting it was really decided in a crucial 10 second window where my reship was slightly too late.
Both sides had several surprises up their sleeves so it was never clear who would win until the very end. Even after losing I had a smile on my face since it was such a good fight. That doesn't always happen in EVE pvp, it's true. But if you're willing to wade through the boring engagements you will find some very fun ones hidden about. And like others said, you're much more likely to find them flying with others.
That's not to say that solo can't be fun, but it's basically EVE on hard-mode. With a little bit of planning you can actually take on veteran players and come out on top sometimes. Nothing feels better than killing a 2003 player flying something shiny in a cheap ship with a trick they weren't expecting. IMO FW isn't as good for this as it used to be because it seems like everyone and their mother has a link ship boosting their "solo" frigate these days. But that will be done away with soon which will be a wonderful day for FW pilots everywhere...

To follow up, there definitely are corps out there that enjoy fighting out numbered and go out their way to find fights in which they are the disadvantage, and turn it around with some clever thinking. This kind of goes with the countering mindset of EVE PVP as well.
In regards to big fleets, I'm not too sure I've only gone on a couple of larger fleets and I personally do not enjoy those. I think what I said above happens both in small and large gang though.

when you escape a gank, that is a win for you in my book. and no, even the best will still follow the order of things, there's no ship that can tank a fleet indefinitely, if caught he might kill some but he'll die eventually.
so as per your experience most of the time they have back-up, because as i've said, this is an MMORPG, playing with others should be the norm.
i'm not saying you can't solo because you can. me, i don't because i suck. i suck because i'm crap at selecting my opponents. knowing your target based on your ship and your fit is vital at winning 1v1. and this skill can only be acquired through experience. i also prefer EWAR and logi over dps.

PvP in Eve is fun on a different layer. It's not so much the shooting part, it's finding or creating a situation you can win in. This takes more time and experience to do well than Orbit -> F1. So in short - it's the hunt that matters, not the kill.
If that's not your thing, then no, you won't. Eve doesn't spoonfeed you interesting encounters. |

Great group to get into PVP with. This. Fleet fights are so intense, and usually all but one sided as there is more time for tactical maneuvers and surprises than during a 30s solo fight.
Regarding solo, the important point is to engage only on your terms, never just sit in a plex waiting for players engaging you ... 90% of the players entering an occupied plex know what they are doing, means they know the trick to win. With killboards, everybody knows what you are usually flying ... except if you do not .
Once I saw a veteran player with a PvP Astero cloaking near a plex. I knew his fit and therefore refitted my Svipul as a counter, and entered the plex ... the Astero took the bait engaging me and was toast. Afterwards, the pilot told me he checked my killboard and thought to give it a try because I lost a couple of Autocannon-Svipuls with MWD fit, which are vulnerable to scram-kiting.

Awesome!! Tons of people giving me info! Thank you everyone!
Reading about your experiences makes me feel a bit more hope again! Perhaps I can get more exciting fights when I've joined a good corp!
It seems I have been a bit misinterpreted though, for starters I have already set my eyes on a corp, just not got around to contacting them yet! So my plan is not to look for 1v1 fights and flying solo only. Secondly I also love the thrill of the hunt as Neuntausend mentioned earlier. I definitely agree it can be more fun than the fight it self!
Mishra San Thanks for the hint about "Spectre Fleet", I'll be sure to check that out asap! Sounds like a good place to hang around til I'm setup in a new corp!
I'll check out alliance tournaments and red vs blue as well, sounds like there could be some exciting fighting going on there! And perhaps a great place to learn pvp from.
All in all, judging from your info, it seems the main reason I'm having a bit of a bad time is because I'm flying solo. Sounds like smaller fleet battles can be really fun! I'm gonna have to swap into that pvpcorp asap!
Huge thanks everyone for sharing your experience with me, I really appreciate it! And I'm definitely not giving up yet. I've got a strong urge to try out fighting in fleets with a corp, that sounds like great fun!
Thanks everyone once again! o7 |

One of my best PVP memories was a random war against Eve University. Over 4 billion ISK exploded on each side, we had many different fights against different targets, from newbies to veterans. From easy ganks to getting our ***** handed to us by a squad of veterans. It's silly... but a single hisec war turned out to be more fun then we had in FW space in a looooong time. |

There are times you are PvPing for the fun of it, don't caring if you lose or win, taking any reasonable fight. Of course there are also times where you PvP for the win, to grab the loot, defend your space, take others space, or wave your e-peen. The different groups in EvE weight those categories differently.
