So I bought myself a MJD, but the restrictions on them I do not understand. Surely I should be able to fit them on any ship above frigate, am I missing some in game reason as to why i can't?.
I mean any ship that is able to handle the stresses of warp should be able to handle an MJD, both the ships warp drive and the MJD takes a bit of time to spool up so that can't be the reason why.
So please enlighten me as to why the restrictions are as they are.. |

Because it's too big and/or needs certain systems that some ships simply don't have?
E.g. you could probably fit a standard toilet bowl into your car but it certainly won't be functional since your car is missing some vitals systems for operating the toilet. (well, ok you could probably "use" it, but the result wouldn't be very pretty) |

Gameplay reasons.
Small ships (frigates) get huge speed bonuses from afterburner and mwd, they can cover the 100km distance fast.
Big ships, because of their mass, barely get any speed out of afterburner and mwd, and thus can't escape a situation where they're swarmed by small frigates that their guns can't hit. So the MJD was introduced as an escape mechanism. You jump away, and you have a few seconds to try to align and warp out before the frigates (after- or MWD-) burn to you and catch you again.
From CCP's point of view it's the perfect escape mechanism. Not 100% guaranteed, and you maybe get a chance to get out of a hopeless 0% situation.
EDIT: The spool-up delay (and rather obvious visuals that are displayed around your ship as you activate the MJD) are there to warn your attackers that you're about to jump, give them a chance to wipe out your capacitor with energy neutralizers and keep you from going. |

As said, balance and usefulness reasons. Both ship classes that can use them are relatively cumbersome and benefit the most from the module. |

Medium MJD's can only be fitted to BC's and DST's, large MJD's can only be fitted to battleships. MJD field generators can only be fitted to command destroyers.

I liked the toilet analogy , so bigger more cumbersome ships. I gather cruisers are considerd to small and fall under the frigate rule.
But by that rule i should be able to fit an MJD to say a mammoth or an orca, even a freighter could benefit. I feel it's some odd balancing, three ships alone can use it.
Thank you for laying it out for me, it is a little bit clearer now as to why CCP took that in my opinion odd decision.. |

But more than three ships can use it - There are 4 Deep Space Transports, 20 Battlecruisers and 35 battleships that can use MJDs. Don't forget the 4 command destroyers with their Micro Jump Field Generator and that the Mobile Microjump Unit exists as a deployable.
As for what can't use it, it really does come to a balancing issue. T1 industrials don't need the help from an MJD - the technique to use on them is the MWD + Cloak trick.
Apart from the Bowhead, freighters don't have mid slots, so can't fit mid-slot modules. It would also be an interesting ballancing issues - having an MJD-fit freighter would be a significant nerf to suicide ganking. You can also possibly assume that capitals are too massive to use MJDs as the Command Dessies can't jump them.
The orca is an odd one. It is an industrial command ship but this is different to a battlecruiser command ship in that the Orca is BS mass and sometimes classed as a Capital by CCP and sometimes not. Again it would be a balancing issue if an Orca could jump 100km from a gank squad...

It's probably more like "if a cruiser is surrounded by frigates, its weapons can hit frigates quite well (maybe with a bit of help from a stasis webifier or target painter), so why jump out-of-range?"
Freighters won't be able to align fast enough; even cruisers can probably speed across the 100km range and catch them before they align.
Other ships and capitals... well, the MJD is an escape mechanism, and ultimately CCP retains the right to decide what ships should escape and what ships should not.
Also, it's a relatively new module; first they introduced it, then after a while they added to the list of ships that could use it. So maybe they'll add capitals to the list in the future. Esp. since they're planning to change the doomsday weapon gameplay to allow the possibility of evading the weapon's beam; MJD would be useful for this.

There are Intie fits that can cover 100km in less time than a MJD takes to spoolup. |
