Many are like me, we are still around.
We just don't feel like supporting some of the new things like we used to do in the past.
I dislike the new forums. Slow and with functionality removed. Granted there is some new functionality but yet another example of CCP forcing things upon us that they know better about it than we do.
Too little, too late.
Another reason to just not bother much is CCP's recent fiascos. To be honest I would not say they were any worse than others in the past. They were just quite literally the final straw for many. I've lost a lot of in game friends (though we still game together where) to the point that I find little reason to log in most weeks. Sadly, I hear that a few more of my friends' accounts are closing down in the next couple of weeks.
This is not to be dismissive or critical of the community that has grown up into the void left by many old timers leaving. The flavor here has become ... more bland. Not very often do I see anything worth interacting upon. However I do still read, treasuring those gems that pop up with much delight.
Edit Note: A fine example is how clicking "post" somehow inserted coding into my post from nowhere. |

One of the considerations that brought us to these new forums, which adds some awkwardness that CCP needs to work on, is the need to make Eve Gate fully compatible with whatever Playstation 3 interface Dust 514 is going to have.
It goes a long way towards explaining the... almost console-like design.
Eve is in a transition period right now. I have high hopes for Dust and console-PC integration, and fully expect it all to be well-worth it in the long run. |

People cycle in and out of games. Back when I started the average player lasts less than a year.
And really it's fine, people move on, new people move in and take their place.
Also a lot of people enjoy one or two things about eve and just never adapted to other games styles, if all you like to do is trade how long before you get bored with it, and therefor the entire game the entire game?
Also can I have your stuff. I mean that seriously, to anyone planning on leaving, even just a little of your stuff. I don't care if it's in 0.0 I really need stuff. This character is for Sale, pure trade skills.-á https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=517979#post517979

1a: How often is this asked on the forums? 1b: How often does it yield results?
As an added bonus: I've never asked people for their stuff and I've often had people dump stuff on me as they've quit.

I'm actually kind of surprised and happy to come back after a few months off and see that many of the "elite" types have vanished. There were too many supposed truisms floating around, which led to a rather unwelcoming atmosphere for anybody trying to float new ideas or challenge old ones. |

I haven't seen any new idea on MD for a very long time.... just poorly thought-out rehashes of old ideas that were already discussed in much more detail years ago. |

I think part of the problem with Market Discussion is there is rarely a good topic that can be discussed that has a point in doing so. If you have a business idea, revealing it to the public is almost always a bad idea. If you attempt to discuss market movers you are viewed as a market manipulator. About the only thing worthwhile chatting about on this particular forum is IPO investments and with no way to enforce a contract it's always hit or miss. More often than not, a miss. |

Pathfinders discover the truisms by challenging what is known with seeking what is unknown. Pathtrodders only go where others have already gone and swear only by what is "known". The latter group is much more numerous, and present here, than the other.
Do not confuse the "old guard" as being pathtrodders. Those who are not accepting of new ideas were not part of any group I subscribed to in any way. However ignoring "truisms" is quite honestly one of the stupidest ideas to come along and only benefits those who prefer to prey upon others.
So I dare you: Go ahead, ignore the truisms. Lets see how long you keep your isk. If you've got any worth losing.

I think there's plenty worth chatting about. It's just that everybody has been taught to feel all self-important about every little move they're making in the game. I have to say, about 95% of what others are doing in the markets or otherwise is probably of very little use to individuals here, except maybe for trolling purposes ("Oh look, I'll ruin your market, tra-la-la!" ... "Uh, okay, I'll just find another one in two minutes"). |

No there are plenty if legit trade secrets. The game is loaded with profitable niches. If you were to mention them on the forum they would quickly cease to be profitable - thus they are a secret.
Its not that they are extremely complex or hard o find - its just that no one tends to fins them given the modest at best intensity with which we play the game for the most part. Wherever You Went - Here You Are |

Nobody denies the existence of valid "trade secrets." I think the idea is that this "trade secret" mentality is called on far too often as an excuse to keep mum on MD, largely in service of ego. A lot people want to craft the image that they're involved in a lot of hush-hush, top secret stuff, when really, if you could see what they were up to, it would likely be all too mundane. |

You are partially right. Ego is a main driver however there is validity to being mum on your own projects. People here will immediately go out with the full intent of stealing your opportunity. Nothing egotistical about it, it is historical.

Same.
I am about to achieve the last bit in another MMO before I am maxed and have got all the best stuff available and have nothing left to do.
Now after the huge fiascos and customer spit-in-face of this summer (beginning with the STEAL of 2 months worth of my subscriptions) and the drop in playerbase I predicted many months ago (including graph on Akita's thread), I wanted to check EvE out for a bit and see if they changed their ways.
@Shar Many galactic hugs!
I think I am one of the path-finders, I tried to introduce many new things in EvE, some succesfully, some not.
The obtuse hostility and unchecked trolling certainly don't encourage people sharing their ideas.
Though inventing things is the number 1 motivator for me to play this game. Seeing multiple insurance contracts WORK was awesome, seeing the first charity WORK was incredible. Gaining 30% of my whole NAV by not playing till yesterday was easily predicted by basic market analysis but still nice.
