While I support this change I also agree that tools need to be introduced to make finding and tracking targets worthwhile. The watchlist was semi-useful as a way of tracking however it was buggy (number of hours I wasted looking for someone watchlist said was online but who wasnt is crazy) and exploitable (you could appear offline when you were online deliberately).
Something Ive been begging for for years is a suite of skill based bounty hunting tools and or modules / ships (Astero would be great) that allows reliable but not 100% abilty to track down and hunt a specific target.

As a mercenary, this is terrible.
I get that watchlisting cap pilots was easymode intel that needs to be made more difficult, but killing the watchlist entirely (which opt-in does) completely wrecks certain lines of work.
I'd suggest allowing watchlisting of parties you have a "legitimate" interest in, such as killrights or declared warfare.

Allowing watchlisting for wardecs adds a reason for wormholers to bother wardecing each other. +1
The only issue I take with adding that as a wardec service is the meta nature of login status. If you're okay with that I am too.

Complaints like this make it fairly evident who the real predators are, and who are the guys just looking for fish in a barrel.
If you want to propose some kind of mechanic where certain Persons Of Interest can be tracked for a fee then so be it but it needs to be short lived and have the cost scale upwards in an appropriate manner. You should not be able to just watchlist people willynilly because you found some random space object they own somewhere.
It also comes back to a complaint I made a long long time ago about a similar thing. I don't put my name on the side of my car why would my depot have my name on it?

On the contrary shooting fish in a barrel is sitting on a stargate popping random newbs (because anyone whos not a newb can evade a gatecamp). Hunting specific targets takes an enormous amount of work, rather than popping 10 to 50 an hour gatecamping you would be lucky to find and kill 10 a day since 1) they have advance warning usually 2) they would have you in their own address book 3) You are the mobile one meaning youre entering system to catch them rather than theyre entering system on their way somewhere solo.
Plus its much cooler, like a lion roaming and hunting instead of like a crocodile hiding in a pool killing whatever dares to put its neck out.

"Fish in a barrel" doesn't at all describe what it takes to pursue a target.

Wardecs cost isk, scale in cost according to target population, and even notifiy your target that you have the ability to monitor them.

Actually, that's a really good reason to watchlist people. Wardec their corp to remove a POS or POCO or whatever,

Meh. This just hurts small players to protect the big players. The big players who hunt capitals will just adept. But the little guys who just want to see when their war targets are logged in, or when some large alliance has put a titan online indicating a potential blob hot drop on their 5 man gate camp are screwed out of content.

So basically what we're looking at here is taking an incredibly useful tool and changing it to something rendering it essentially useless to a lot of people who use it for a variety of purposes?
If I want to see my friends in the game they're mainly in the same chat room whenever we log on.
If I want to know if I might get blowed up by war targets or if it might be worth the drive to find war targets I won't be able to know who's online at a given time?
As it's been pointed out: Eve's a pretty spread out game. Watchlist can cut both ways with war targets and others. It's a useful tool that the players have learned to use in a manner not anticipated by CCP's original intent.
So: Why change this part of the game again?

You don't have to be a crazy stalker to enjoy EVE, but it helps. After this change, you're going to lose a lot of crazy stalkers. Do you really want an EVE without crazy stalkers?
...hmm, that sounds more sarcastic than intended. To be clear, I seriously think that being able to be a crazy stalker in EVE is a large part of what makes it great. EVE isn't real life, and it's not like other games. It's space submarines and spy games and "free intel" is a nonsensical term used to justify removal of intel that makes people uncomfortable. Being uncomfortable is exactly how you should feel in EVE, sitting in a tin can and not knowing who's out to get you or when and where they'll strike. |

do you REALLy need all those settings? just have good, bad and neutral standings, your alliance and corp are automatically added to good. I mean why would you want to take to someone whos is -5 over someone who is -10.
Ill still ask for the AFK light though, as it would be good to see if people are away, this is something they could set themselves or it comes on due to inactivity, plus its really good for corps alliances to understand who is actually playing especially when you need to fight.

Well, the other free-intel tool, Kill-mails, will give you away.
And I wouldn't say it would be a bad thing for the Super-Hunters out there if Super pilots started getting reckless when such free-intel tools are removed from the game.
Of course you can't keep them in constant fear of your immediate response time if any dare to log in nearly anywhere in the universe anymore, but that is a bit over-kill isn't it.
But with more Supers being more willing to fly around and do stuff without needing to be in a massive fleet of other supers, you might have more potential for the lower level Super-Hunters finding a fair amount of their own to liquidate from the game.
I say let them rat in compete anonymity and eventually they will make that mistake.

I don't care. Its most notorious use was to camp logged off supers. Such that if one were to log in, someone would see and log on a HIC with a cyno and a probe launcher in the system the locator agent said he was in. Supers are so slow and hard to hide that even unbonused ships with combat probes could detect their location and warp and bubble following a cyno with little to no effort. All before they left warp (although that has since changed). Seriously the only thing they needed was to know the name of the character and that was all the intel they needed to camp a guy into staying off-line with their alt also off-line. That is some really cheesy meta-game crap right there.
The problem with relying on a game mechanics to meta-game with is that you really have no platform to complain when or if it is ever changed. Its one thing to go "Oh XXX is online, lets go find them" and another to go "oh XXX is online, time to log on an alt to bubble him at this login point I found out via totally legit space magic means." |
