Simple suggestion to enable people to stack more chats and charts without denying themselves their game space - here's how: 1) The area which we can define as field of view [FoV] (the place where things happen, spaceships fly and explode) is to have an option to be scaled down regardless of resolution. - This way we can for instance slim down the FoV to half the display and have plenty of space for chat windows while still being able to watch whatever is up, or when using two displays combined move all the windows to one display and enjoy the space not covered in them on the other.
2) Chat and other GUI windows can then be moved to a space that is out of FoV
- more space for all those intel thingies - more view of actual space and not just the gui windows + overview no matter how opaque. - more customization in the hands of the player for a more personal feel. - very community friendly - less punishing for keeping awareness over multiple channel ongoings. - if I am as an "average" alliance member to keep track of local, corp, alliance and whatever quantity of other channels without clicking between them every second, while also having local long enough to be able to see hostiles I can no longer see half of the screen, unless it's big, yes, and even then I am missing out.
Since you can already move the windows around a bit and you can regulate the size of the sidebar and thus the FoV, I suppose that at least tiny base for the job is already there, but I could be wrong.

Sounds like you're describing something similar to, e.g., Ultima Online's "Story" window, which could be independently resized to be smaller than the application window itself.
That's something I've thought would be quite nice in Eve for a while. Not sure if it's feasible.

You can double click your chat bar at the top and it 'rolls up' into a single line and let's you use all your playing area. If you're in a pvp situation you can just double click all your chats out of the way and then bring them back once the fight is over. If it's a slow fight over hours, then you can probably survive bringing chat windows back in play as necessary. If you're trying to do pvp or high end pve via chat instead of voice coms - (derogatory stuff for playing the game wrong) - just pony up the isk (you can get coms via isk) or real life money and get a 3rd party coms program OR use the in game voice function.
I really can't see any time where a big chat window needs to be open to play the game properly. With eve voice and 3rd party comms I'm just not seeing a need to totally redesign how eve is viewed.
I get your beef w/ chat being in the way, but there are current compensatory measures (good ones) that are available and a complete change to the way eve is presented to the player isn't warranted.

There is often a lot more than just chat clogging up the interface. DScan, People and places for bookmarks for warpouts, even the overview itself can take up a lot of screen real estate depending on how many columns you have in view.
This option would potentially address some of that. Personally, I wouldn't mind being able to drag UI elements onto another screen and have the main screen for the in space view and modules. |

Can we add bringing Tab back to your list? That was a so useful feature they removed because people supposedly kept freaking out that their UI was gone when they would accidentally hit Tab.
"Tomahawks?"
"----in' A, right?"
"Trouble is, those things cost like a million and a half each."
"----, you pay me half that and I'll hump in some c4 and blow the ---- out of it my own damn self."

When I was a newb, I would play for days without overview or any UI cause I alt tabbed myself out of the game and the effect did not cancel itself when I tabbed myself back in =D but well... at least I learned the hardcore way. Imagine looting 50 wrecks by just looking around in space. Feature is good, but could use another binding key, which it probably has now, I think it is still available you just need to bind it again?

I would disagree that using example of the "local metagame" when it can be extremely beneficial to know the number of players in local - which can be observed in a mini chat window, but also want to see all players in local whenever numbers allow it. (pretty tough to check for war targets in Jita) thus when put to extreme you want the local occupy space from top to bottom. Or you don't. maybe you just need to HTFU, but that's the thing, when I HTFU I miss out part of my gameplay, which is sad.
Comms are great, I wonder how many people use the in game comms, but even if you do not solo to talk to yourself, there has to be someone to spam that D-scan (again - can produce ridiculously long list of vital intel) and check local as mentioned above to voice it over to you.

Yes. another unpopular (omg go back to wow!) example is World of Warcraft which not only would supports this feature on a script level because of the ridiculous amount of extra UI you could get from 3rd party development, but also multitude of 3rd party beneficial UI replacements which could possibly be a way to go in the future. We already have plentiful of support pages and features available in the in game browser, which is another candidate for the placement outside of the FoV rather than on top of everything.

Bump. I want your feedback!
Others call me weak for not condescendingly speaking to plebs, but they are those speaking to plebs at all fortunately only those in "imperium" are plebs.

Someone reported this thread, but did not indicate why.
I like this Idea. I also have wanted to move intel and chat to my second screen and I have by stretching my game window across and moving Camera Focus to the left. This is not Ideal as there are still icons for things in space on the right side of the screen (showing what's behind you).
