Hello EvE community,
Before you comment "don't put painters on carriers scrub" hear me out. If you are a fellow carrier pve pilot who uses fighters in anoms like me, I have recently analyzed some data using a very helpful website to see target painters effectiveness on my carrier in terms of helping fighters apply their damage.
http://imgur.com/a/jlpqO
Those images are graphs showing the shots missed by my firbolgs when I used 1 or 2 target painters and other things like damage, etc. As you can see when I actively used 2 target painters my firbolgs hit 86% of all shots (on battleship sized targets). You can assume these number to be lower for smaller targets. I use a tengu alt to clear all targets below the battleship level so I never end up firing on those targets anyway, hence why I use fighters. When I dropped down to 1 target painter, my firbolgs only landed 77% of their shots on average. I gathered this data by running two sanctums for the 2 target painter graph and 1 sanctum for the single target painter. I could have gathered more data to better interpret the results, but didn't think I would see big changes, only a more accurate %. I also didn't run any sanctums with 0 painters, but I assume their hit % would drop even more. I will try to get a better graph later on that analyzes more than 1-2 anoms, for 2 painters, 1 painter, and 0 painters. But for now thought I'd share my results!
I wanted to see if anyone else has experienced a benefit from using painters with fighters and to try this themselves. The website I used to analyze my combat logs was http://evelog.mikk36.eu/ (Thumbs up for the creator of this website ).
Let me know what you guys think and fly safe

P.S. I use two omnidirectional tracking units with 2 tracking speed scripts along with the 2 painters, just to clarify! |

target painters are a good idea, and anyone that that thinks it isn't just cant be bothered to try and improve anything beyond the cookie cutter setup they were given 2 years ago. Last time i was carrier ratting sanctums a year or so ago with a toon, i was making 60-70 mill tics with a thanny an extra omni is easier but if you are actively paying attention a target painter or two can deff help. I generally try to run 3 tracking scripted omnis then one or two target painters.
can you run a sebo, sure but after initial warp in you have more than enough time to lock new targets as you kill current ones
drone nav, can be helpful but again you can actively pick your targets to mitigate travel times
ecm burst can make drone aggro basically non existent, but again can be mitigated
how you fit your carrier is based on how you want to play the site. also you have plently of cargo and fleet bay for refits, carry a mobile depot and react to your situation.

generally speaking frigs will die to the fighters before they ever get to you, but if they swap close or you dont lock them up fast enough run a smart bomb and maybe refit a second one to make it quick. carry a remote rep in fleet bay to rep fighters when needed. always carry extra tanking mods, cap mods, mwd ect ect ect. Try stuff out and figure out what works for your style
also, split your fighters into 2 groups and engage separate targets |

Or just kill all battleships then recall fighters and deploy heavies/mediums to mop up the cruisers?
Target painters have the added side effect of making targeting problem children like elite cruisers faster too. The faster the lock the faster the target dies.

with 3 omni's fighters track frigs well let alone cruisers, let alone with added tp's also targeting time only matters on first lock, other than that you have full queue of targets |

In my personal experience the diminishing returns on 3 tracking computers isn't worth the slot.
If you're going balls to the wall active fighter ratting thanny its definitely 2x TP 2x TC and either sebo or shield booster depending on what phase of the wave you're in.
The lows are super easy, 4x DDA, co-processor (if required) or 2x cap relay. Swap out as needed. You will:
a) never go below jump cap b) do max dps at all phases c) not die
Rigs are slightly less flexible but I use Drone hp rig and 2x CCC. The hp rig helps with keeping fighters in shield while locking the next wave.
Whether you want to go 15 fighter or 14 fighter and EWAR is up to you but I've found it functional in any configuration. Doctrine suggests using a cyno but really.... depending on your group and their policy on carrier ratting a cyno can be many things but only rarely a get-out-of-jail card.
