OK the title sounds really dumb but I'm a fairly new player here ;)
Anyway, could someone answer the following questions I have about stealth bombers?
1) When I'm cloaked, does this hide me from both sensors and visual line-of-sight. 2) Is there any way to detect a stealth bomber (some sort of enhanced sensors?) 3) How long can I stay cloaked? Indefinitely? A minute? A few seconds? 4) Can i warp and exit warp under cloak? 5) Are there any limits to activating cloak? 6) What are the tactical strengths and weaknesses of stealth bombers.
Sorry for all the questions... curious noob here.
Thanks!

1: Yes. 2: No. 3: From Server-Up to Server Down (indefinitely). 4: Only if the ship you're flying can fit a Covert Ops Cloak, bombers fit this category. 5: Yes. You can't be closer than 2,000m from any object. Ships have a 'reactivation delay' so when you decloak, you cannot cloak again for a period of time (usually not long) 6: Strengths: Stealth, solid damage from a frigate platform, ability to launch Bombs (in 0.0 or WH space only), can light a Covert Cyno. Cheap/ Weaknesses: Paper thin tank, Torpedos cannot hit small targets very well, Bombs cannot be used in empire space, limited ability to change damage types (you lose a lot of damage using Thermal torps in, for example, a Manticore)
A ~20 pilot fleet of bombers can dish out a ridiculous amount of damage pretty quickly and rather cheaply. Bombers have many uses.
Here is an example of Goons FC DBRB demolishing an entire Ishtar fleet with bombers.
I was on grid in a Celestis when that went off and it was pretty spectacular to watch.

Yes.

These can all be addressed together.
Cloaking works indefinitely. However, you decloak (and cannot activate cloak) if you are within 2000m of, well, anything. If it has the possibility of showing up on overview, it will decloak you if you're too close. Period.
In any ship fit with a covert ops cloaking device you can warp cloaked; this includes stealth bombers. Note that you have to train cloaking to 4 to fit a covert ops cloak; you should absolutely do so and fit one on any ship that can fit one. It's a pretty limited selection.
You cannot do anything else; all module activations fail. Modules active when you hit cloak will stay active until their cycle runs out but that's it.
Also, you cannot cloak if someone has targeted you. Once cloaked, you of course cannot be targeted unless cloak breaks.

They're made of tissue paper. If anything looks at you too sternly you might just pop. However, they can apply quite a bit of damage to larger targets.
They rely on two weapon systems: bombs and torpedoes. Neither does a whole lot to frigates. Bombs can only be used in null and wormholes; low sec won't cut it. Torpedoes are great and all, but seriously: very poor damage application to anything smaller than an industrial.
Usual tactic is to fly in packs and pick weak targets. You have the ability to choose your engagement (though you might not always be able to disengage).
If you're interested, check out wingspan or bombers bar. They're both all about bombers and would be happy to take you in and teach you the ropes. |
