1) I am running a pretty high end computer (but only one). Is it worth it to run two instances of Eve on the same computer?
2) My main is a combat pilot (Amarr) and most of my time is spent ratting in low-sec with the intent to move to more time spent in 0.0 & PVP once my skills mature. What would be the most advantageous type of character and race to have on the second account?
Any friendly advice would be appreciated.

1) Yes. You should be fine as long as you have at least 1 gigabyte of RAM and at least 128MB of graphics memory. If you have less than 256MB of graphics memory though, I would suggest you avoid maxing your antialiasing with two clients, as your computer may run out of graphics memory and have some graphics glitches with only 128MB.
2) Trade character, perhaps? Maybe a freighter pilot? That's if you want a "carebear" character though. If you want something useful in PvP, a covert ops alt is always useful.

Yes if your comp is high end then you should have no problem running 2 instances.

Ive always figured Hauler/Trade/Scout for second account. Perhaps some spare chars placed for market viewing etc.

A typical combination is a combat character and a support character.
The combat ones pretty obvious.
The roles a support character can take though vary. This can include being an uber miner, freighter pilot, covert ops/cyno alt/scout, research alt, logistics cruiser support for missions and complexes and so on.
It helps to have a specific aim in mind with the second character so you can focus it's training and get it to a point where it's doing it's role well nice and quick. Over time you'll find you can expand its training into other areas.
I have the body of a supermodel. I just can't remember where I left it.

Most of the game is playable when running 2 accts on a fairly low end computer. Until recently I was running with a celeron processor, 512 mb ram and a geforce 5200. Just dont expect to enter Jita or pvp anytime soon.

Well I run 3 accounts and I was in same boat as you when I first started. One of the best peices of advice though that I can give you is when creating the new character/account, make sure you spend the first month doing all the learning skills to 5 and then all the advanced learning to 4.....you WON'T regret it.
Also, I can run 3 accounts at same time on my 3400 amd 64 with 1.5 gig ram. Shouldn't be a problem for you. If just using one screen, just run them in windowed mode.
The next decision is what kind of a pilot do you want? Combat or industrial? If combat, go with gallente or minmatar. If industrial, well, thats easy, just get into a covetor as fast as possible.

Another stability tip: disable sound on both clients. Its a shame to loose the music, but the sound engine/creative drivers are really unstable when running multiple clients on the same PC. - - - PIs and Forensic Accountants: adding risk vs reward for scams and thievery |

And make sure you turn off the turret and general effects too (crtl-alt-shift-t/e) as they can muck up your fps in areas with lots of fighting going on.. Do that and run windowed mode at 1024x768 with a screen rez of 1600x1200 and you can get up to 5 clients running at once with very acceptable fps.. Thats on a slightly dated rig though with an amd 2600+ 1 gig of ram and an ati 9600xt 128mb card.. So no worries on the hardware front then.. For my second account I trained up two minimum skill pure hauler/miner/price checker alts at first then focused on a second eventual high skill combat/cov ops/scout.. So I'd say go for it.. Having two ships to control at once really makes eve alot more fun for me no matter what I'm doing and the first time your scout saves your exspensive mains ship at a camp you will probably start thinking of a *third* account..

Yep, some extra RAM and a good vidcard is a must, i bought a dual core proc with 1 gig of ram but the vidcard and the 1 gig were definitly a bottleneck (esp the vidcard was crappy) once i exchanged it for a decent card and added another stick of ram i have both my accounts running as smooth as silk on hi settings all the way (getting 70 to 80 fps with both chars undocked) Resized tag... again... hope this pleases the tag ninjas from ccp... again :p

I've found the most appealing way to train up a secondary account is to have a production/covert-ops/freighter/trade pilot, in that order. I'd also skill up to Battle cruisers to grind L3's for a short period of time to gain enough standing with a corporation of your picking to minimize tax. After all this is done...go R&D :D At least, that's my plan, eventually... ---

+++ One modification.. You only need the lvl 1 learning skills up to 4 to go to the advanced learning skills..
Multiple accouns can be VERY useful, a trader alt can pay for itself easily and possibly cover your main account (isk for GTC's)

Edited by: Jak Flash on 09/02/2007 19:30:51 God I love this community! Thanks for all the good advice. I'm going to roll it around in my head, but I think I'm going to create a Gallente - Miltary - Special Forces alt on the other account and aside from learning skills, skill up to to Covert Ops with supporting skills. Than I can either diversify to include R&D on my alt or work more production skills into my mains. I'd really like to get much more into PVP, as I miss the adrenalin surge from MMO's of my past. Since my main is in a respected Corp that is Anti-pirate, maybe I need to explore my dark side with the new alt.
Any continued advice is always appreciated, thanks for the help!

Go all out combat on the current then train everything else on the 2nd account, you'll run out of things to train for soon enough and should be able to cover all bases as EVE isn't very deep in other aspects of the game.

I run 2 clients just fine on an AMD 2.6ghz Dual core, with 1gb of ram and a X1800XL 512mb. I can run them both at 1600x1200 with advanced options enabled and i get about 70 FPS at the same time.
My roommate runs 3 clients on a AMD Opteron 170 with 2gb of ram on a 6800 Ultra. He general runs one client at 1920x1200 and two a 1200x1024. Im not sure what sort of AA/AF or advanced options he runs.

Ok, I went to the dark side and purchased the second account ... I feel so dirty. As everyone stated, I have no problem running both accounts on my comp. Heres my next delimma.
I took everyone's advice to heart, and since I'm gearing up my main for PVP, my intent is to build up this Alt as a support class for PVP as well. I rolled Gallente and my initial thought was to train straight to Stealth Bombers with this new alt. The issue I'm seeing quickly is how viable are Stealth Bombers as an assist platform? Should I steer more towards Covert Ops or something bigger? What ship class would be best?
My main is a few days away from Assault Frigates and is trained pretty well in Battle Cruisers & Medium Laser Turrets.
My alt is going to be where my dark side emerges and I won't worry so much about security rating, but will be able to provide support (in some way) to my main, the respectable one. I will probably at some time also delve into Industry/R&D with my alt since I am 100% combat based on my main.
What have the rest of you found to be the best initial direction to train?
Its expected to Snow & Ice here in the Washington DC area tomorrow so I'll be glued to Eve until the weather clears (as long as my wife gives me permission! I'm just prestaging my thought processes while the new alt is training learning skills!

if that helps
my main char (splag) is pure combat
my alt trained capital ship production and all production skills, empire control 5, freighter, marketing skills
all that stuff that's useful but annoying to train ------
