Good evening (at least in the EST), I'm starting PI and attempting to make sense of the extractor heads. The amount per hour seems to have no bearing on whether I'm at a 'hot spot' or not. For instance, I am starting out making coolant. I have the planet (gas) filtered for Aqueous Solutions and am moving my heads around. I am often getting better PO/Hour from areas not even listed as hot spots or orange/red bands. What am I missing?

Maybe your scanning skills related to Pi are not very high yet, they can really make the difference to show where the good spots really are.

The Planetology and Advanced Planetology skills control the accuracy of your scan. Planetology level 3 will do if you're just starting but if you're serious about PI, get them both to level 4. |

Thanks to you both. I have maxed PI skills on this character, which is part of the reason I'm super confused. Also, why can adding an extra extractor head make my per-hour units go down? Is there a good optimization guide on this anywhere?

Are you moving the scanner sliding bar to refine your scan?
If so, I don't know why you are experiencing so much of a problem. I may see a slight variation as I move head around, but not enough to worry about.
Perhaps you are depleting your hot spots too fast.

Well, an example: I was setting up a new (closer and more link efficient) complex. I was at 70k units/hour and then placed the last head. It then moved to 62k units per hour (With the additional head) and then I moved it slightly. It jumped to 126k units/hour. This was all in a WH planet with the slider adjusted to highlight hotspots. All heads were in the same 'white' area. I'm learning about hotspot depletion, but the head placement is just...weird. |

Were the heads overlapping?
Was perhaps the extra head putting enough stress on the hotstop that it was going to deplete quickly and leave you with worse yield over the course of the cycle?
I dunno. I'm terrible at PI and just set up the lowest maintenance stuff I can. |
