I've been thinking this over quite seriously recently. And I think something this game is really in need of is achievements. All consoles have an achievement system of some kind allowing you to show off how much time and effort you've out into your games to anyone who cares to look. They can take a look at things you've accomplished and compare it to how far they've gotten in a game. Exceptionally high numbers displaying your commitment to gaming in general. I'm not sure what to call such a system in EVE, maybe new eden points or something? Also I couldn't help myself really, whilst mulling this over as I played MW3 on hard to get that all important 100 gamerscore for completing the campaign by myself I was thinking of appropriate achievements in EVE. I have a few ideas and I really hope you guys can come up with some too!
"The collector" - 5000 completed mining laser cycles. "The mass collector" - 12 hours contiguous mining in one day. "The transporter" - moved 5,000,000m3 worth of cargo at least 10 jumps in one day. "The bully" - war deccing a corp a tenth the population of your own or less. "David" - War deccing a corp ten times the population of your own or more. "Sanctuary" - 1000 completed cycles of bastion. "The undecided" - Take fire at a station and within 60 seconds undock in different ship. "The duet" - engage a lone target whilst receiving fleet boosts. "Low profile" - stay cloaked for a continuous period of 2 hours or more. "pvppp" - challenge someone to a duel whilst in a fleet. "bankrupt" - have a market buy order fail due to insufficient funds. "The saviour" - provide remote reps to someone engaged by only a single target. "Da Bomb" - detonate 8 smart bombs within 10 seconds. "Litter bug" - place and rename a cargo container or mobile depot within 8000km of a station or stargate. "overkill" - destroy a ship with 1/20th the amount of hp as your own or less. "strength in numbers" - appear on a killmail with at least another 49 pilots. "You can't silence me!" - biomass a character at least once every 2 days for 2 weeks. "It's legit I swear" - have a transaction in any form for 100bn or more. "Pushy salesman" - link 1 or more contracts every 20 minutes for at least 2 hours.
I'd really like to hear some from you guys!

Eve has always been about self satisfaction rather than every participant gets a medal.
You want to feel achievement, go achieve something that gives you that feeling.
Alternatively, go make a Corp and award yourself all the medals you want. |

Being able to create medals means you can literally make your own achievement system.
Now... you are probably going to say that the medal system doesn't have any value because it is not universal. People can just make stuff up. Oh wait... that is pretty much what achievements are. Arbitrary (see: made up) limts and numbers.
Thing is though... while I personally would not care if an achievement system (the way the OP is talkig about) is introduced into EVE, I think that is isn't a very good idea. Most people are soft in the head and will try to get every achievement simply because they think it will make the "great players." Additionally, some of them may come to expect rewards when they get a certain number of achievements (which is something a few other games cater to). And the kicker is that it can EASILY go down in that direction.
I know, I know... the "slippery slope" is not always the greatest of arguments. But in the history of gaming, when has it NOT been true?

It's pretty sad that modern games even have achievement markers - is playing the game for it's own sake no longer enough? Must we be constantly patted on the head or have our moustaches twiddled just for turning up? Can one ever ask too many rhetorical questions?

I'm disappointed my list of achievements has just been shunned and no one is even considering their own.

It does not pain me at all to point out to you that people in player corps give their members medals for achieving certain goals, like having killed 100, 1,000, 10,000 Ships in X scenario or even a medal to reward staying on a cancerous TS for hours and harvest salt. Your system is neither beneficial to the game nor is it needed or necessary and it does not serve any purpose whatsoever in the EVE environment.

My ridicule, heavy criticism and general pale outlook about your or CCP's ideas is nothing but an encouragement to prove me wrong. Give it a try.

I'd really like to hear some from you guys! Ugh the bane of modern gaming, developers that give you a "prize" for being able to wipe your own arse.
In short, no thanks.

Between the opportunities and medal systems EVE has this done.
EVE FAQ "7.2 CAN I AVOID PVP COMPLETELY? No; there are no systems or locations in New Eden where PvP may be completely avoided"

Read the list already, this isn't a serious request for achievements.
To answer this post seriously though, recently I was in a channel with a fairly new player to eve and he was busting his nuts to run around New Eden "acquiring" all the opportunities, at one point he asked permission to private convo someone. Not because he needed to but because it was on the list. I asked him what he planned to do once he'd collected them all, to which he said "I don't know." "Well start thinking about that now and save your time trying to fulfil the list."

You have basically just explained - on your very own, too! - why your idea is so patently terrible.
There actually should be an achievement for this: 'Hoisted By Your Own Petard'
