Hardwar (PC, 1998)
Wondering how many remember this game, fondly or otherwise. I discovered it a few years past its prime, and didn't play it much, but I was shocked by its ambitiousness and depth. Bonus points for nods at the film, Hackers.
I consider Hardwar to be something of an ancestor to Eve.

It kind of is with the building and trading aspects of the game but there is a clear lack of interstellar space flight in it which Eve has.
I believe the creators of Eve have mentioned that Elite was one of the inspirations for Eve, but of course there are a ton of space games from the 80's and 90's that they could of drawn inspiration from as well.
I'm happy that there is a huge resurgence in space games but sadly no one can make new ones as good as the old ones.

The original concept of EVE was "Elite with friends" after the neverending development and failure of "Elite IV", which among other features should have implemented multiplayer. Anyway EVE departed that concept durign development and made a dramatic change when the original CEO of CCP was forced to resign and Hilmar took the position. EVE will always show that, as a game, was eventually developed by graphic artists. It may not be as obvious as until Incarna, but even now decissions are made with form over function (just look at the new camera and the struggle to make it just work on top of all the bells and whistles).
CCP Seagull: "EVE should be a universe where the infrastructure you build and fight over is as player driven and dynamic as the EVE market is now".
62% of players: "We're not interested. May we have Plan B, please?"
CCP Seagull: "What Plan B?"

I think the setting of a city called Misplaced Optimism in a crater on Titan is brilliant. I wish Eve was a bit more cyberpunk in style sometimes-- the story seems rather dry. I missed out on the Elite lineage, so I must profess ignorance of its influence. I wish I had the time to play the old games on a legacy PC. Hell, I wish I had time to play Eve.

By the way, Hardwar is from 1998... CCP was established in 1997 and preliminary work on EVE started in 1999. It's easy to forget how old is EVE, but the fact is that it belongs to FOUR generations ago of videogames. |
