So I can lock more than one rat or roid at the same time, but how do I shoot or mine 2 or more different targets at the same time. It must be possible or why have the ability to lock more than one at once. How do I tell miner module A to mine roid A, miner module b to mine roid B, and turret 1,2&3 to shoot at that pesky rat without interupting my mining.
Another time it would come in handy is running missions with weak rats that really only take about 1/2 a volly to pop in my destroyer. It seems I spend more time reactivating the turrets than anything else. Any way to just leave them on or do I need to reactivate with each new target? Currently I lock more than one but they just queue up and everything shuts down when the targeted rat pops (all guns shooting at him). And I have to reactive them all for rat number two.
I have a feeling I'm missing something really simple to make this work...

this is actually a fairly common question....
Ok, so you have locked multiple targets and they all appear as graphical icons at the top of your screen. There is always ONE selected target, and it is indicated by the arrows circling around it. The others are targeted, but not selected.
All you have to do, is click on one of the other icons, and the arrows will move to the new target. You have "selected" or put focus on the new icon.
Activate whatever modules you have, and they will activate on that new target.

Thanks! I knew it was going to be something simple like that.

Yeah, it's really handy when you can fire your rail at target A to draw aggro, send drones to target B, activate salvagers on targets C and D, and tractor in target E. Lots of micromanaging through @_@

Are you all stating that you don't need the skill, "multi-tasking" to target and shoot multiple targets *simultaneously*??

Targetting and shooting multiple targets at the same time is fine for low level NPC, but remember it is best to destroy a target in 30 seconds with 4 guns and have 1 less shooting at you, than to take 60 seconds to kill 2 at the same time and be sustaining full damage for the full 60 seconds
A half dead NPC still does full damage
Also take into account the tanking on the NPC, all NPC repair shields or armour, the longer it takes to kill the moire cycles of repair it gets in, so the longer it takes to die...
That make sense?

Read the description of the skill: Skill at targeting multiple targets. +1 extra target per skill level, up to the ship's maximum allowed number of targets locked.
All multi-tasking does is allow you to lock more targets. Someone with no skill in targeting at all is allowed to lock 2 targets. As long as he has 2 guns, with no additional skills he is able to shoot target A with 1 gun and tartget B with the other. -=^=-

This is critical for destroyer and drone pilots to do.
And it is my understanding it helps with the larger mining ships as well. Because their lasers pull in so much, they waste cycles activating them all on the same rock just to have it pop after one or two full cycles and then a partial. To fix, they activate one laser a roid to prevent any of the lasers from pulling less than their yield and wasting time. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Your signature exceeds the maximum allowed filesize of 24000 bytes - Devil ([email protected]) |

Er, just to point it out: "Multi-Tasking" is the advanced form of the skill "Targeting", both of which are under the Electronics category. Targeting is a Rank 1 skill, and is required to be level V for Multi-Tasking.
In other words, you'll already be able to target 7 targets (2 plus 1 per level of Targeting) before you can even train Multi-Tasking. Most ships in the game have a maximum locked target limit of 7 or less, the Logistics Cruisers were the only ones that I spotted with more (they can have 10 locked targets)

A bit off-topic maybe but using Auto-Targetter modules gives you +1 target per module. In those cases you will need multi-tasking (whatever you would need to lock that many ships/stuff for I don't know).
Help me help you. |

On a topic related to the OP, what happens when you lock more targets than will fit across your screen? My skill allow me to lock 5 targets, and because of the screen res I'm using, these stretch 80% of the way across the screen, leaving room for maybe one more target. If, and when, I can target more than 6, how will the UI handle it:
1) smaller icons? 2) another line of icons? 3) some kind of scrolling list of icons? 4) truncated list of icons - i.e. some will be off the edge of the display and not visible? 5) something else?
One option is to up my screen res, but this causes my laptop to struggle.

Wow, I totally misconstrued that. Well, the upside is that this thread just saved me 11 1/2 days of training time!!
Thank you all.
