In real life, ablative armor is physical armor that is designed to shed pieces or "ablate" to mitigate damage.
A low slot armor module that gives you bonus buffer HP that cannot be repaired in space.
It would give a much greater amount of HP than regular armor plates give, but any ablative HP can only be restored in a station.
In the UI, it could be an orange second armor layer over the normal layer, like the blue shield layer on drifter battleships.
Being a low slot module, you need to choose between normal plates and ablative plates.
In solo PVP, ablative armor would likely be popular because it would grant greater buffer for the same weight, allowing you to survive an encounter and make it back to a station to repair. It falters in longer engagements though because it is not repairable.
In group PvP, ships could choose between ablative armor and armor plates depending on their strategy and their enemy. Armor plates are better for receiving reps, but ablative armor gives you a much greater amount of buffer to fight without logi support. Whether you have the ability to fall back to a station to repair your ablative armor would factor into it, as well. |

It's an interesting idea. My only problem with it is that extra armor buffer with the same weight at the expense of having to get it fixed in-station sounds an awful lot like pay-to-win - something I feel CCP has gotten a little closer to with the release of skill injectors.
Most good solo PVP fights leave one ship destroyed and the other quite damaged. The overwhelming majority of solo pvp I've seen the pilots elect for active reps in place of buffer, to be lighter and quicker. Many of your frigate PVPers currently dip into null for a good fight, then run back to rep up and reload ammo before going back out anyway. So extra armor buff with no weight penalty for extra money seems like it would take the fight the wrong way - toward those that could afford it rather than those with the best tactics.
So it would be wildly popular in solo/gang pvp for those with isk to burn, and useless in fleets.
This is just my opinion. I like the idea in theory, but worry it would be detrimental to younger characters. |

(raises eyebrows, then slowly nods) Yep.
"Tomahawks?"
"----in' A, right?"
"Trouble is, those things cost like a million and a half each."
"----, you pay me half that and I'll hump in some c4 and blow the ---- out of it my own damn self."
