Hello all.
I have just started playing EvE this evening and am impressed with the game so far. To get started in this new universe I have decided to try my hand at running mission ( don't fancy mining much ).
Having had a quick scan of the forums it seems that a lot of mission runners use a Caldari Raven as thier ship. Whilst I know I can train any races ship skills should I roll a Caldari to be the best mission runner possible?
Having played about with character creation earlier on I made a Caldari character and flew about a bit, jumped in Jita system and my pc went ape****!.
Is it viable to run missions as a different race? Are there other ships that can handle the tougher missions other than the Raven?
Thanks for reading, please forgive my noobishness.

Welcome to Caldari Online EVE Online.
There is no other ship than Raven hull that can do level 4 missions faster. As you already figured out, you can train any race ships and items. So choose whatever race you want, your name and your face are pretty much stuck for the rest of your character life, so choose carefully.
Fighters should have at least 7 or 8 perception, willpower, and intelligence to start. Ok memory. Charisma is not too important.

Keep in mind Charisma is the Primary attribute for Social Skills, which are very important for mission runners. Now that being said, Charisma affects the least number of skills, so its usually a low priority, just shouldn't be ignored altogether.
Personally I like to keep all my attributes pretty even, so I may not learn a particular skill group as fast as someone else, but I'm never handicapped either.

For clarification, the Raven is the only ship that can do missions with the greatest efficiency when flying SOLO. The Raven is also an excellent tank due to it's comfy fitting req's, although the Apoc can serve as a better tank against certain server foes.
The other ships are very powerful when flying in pairs, especially the Amarr or Minmatar, but it depends on what type of enemy you are fighting to do significantly better than a pair of Ravens. The typhoon has always been very popular for npcing, as has the geddon for dps backup.
The only difference your starting character makes is the kind of learning attributes you will have for the life of your character. I suggest you make an initial character, review the skills in the game and the forums to get an idea of starter careers, and select a skillset you wish to concentrate on. Most focus on gunnery and ship piloting, and usually pick a tertiary focus. However, you really only need to worry about this if you wish to "advance" at the fastest rate possible. Stick around for a few months/years, and it starts to seem pretty moot. For some, just training the basics and finding something you like just make skill training an opportunity to experiment with random things apart from what you like. Or you may eventually wish to suspend training on that char to keep clone costs down. CCP have been adding new skills for all the traits, so any balanced character is going to be useful if you end up developing an all-rounder for the first year or so.
So, don't worry about it. Just pick the character that you like. Your real success in the game will depend on you more than your character's attributes.

FYI. Jita is most crowded system in Eve. A couple of jumps out in any direction and things are much better.
I run lv4s in a Typhoon which is good but the torp / cruise missile spamming Raven will be much better. As it shield tanks (mid slots) you can have a couple of BCUs (Ballistic control systems) the lows slots which up the Rate Of Fire and give a damage bonus.
This is harder in the Typhoon as its low slots are full of armour hardners and plate.

Man, I see a big fat NERF in the works for the Raven. It would be a silly thing do to considering how much of the player base % is Caldari but the whining minority on a forum are usually the ones that get listened to. Squeaky wheels and grease etc.
I'm close to the skills needed for a raven but no where near the amount of isk. I reckon about 2-3 months (yeah?) of intense mining, ratting/salvage and buy low/sell high should get me there. Then you got the expense of kitting it out, insurance...on and on. I'll let you know how it runs in a few months :)
I only have the Moa because our corp leader built it for me. I have to pay him back of course, hehe.
