Do you actually believe that CCP will be dumb enough to not sell Dust as a boxed product, in stores, or on Steam, for at least 60 dollars per unit?
Do you actually believe they spent that long on developing it to basically give it away for 20 dollars? Are you stupid? Yes you are! Are you gullible as ****? Yes you are!
Also, I've been playing MMOS since Ultima, so you and your condescending attitude can suck a ****. Oh dear, so much anger. Tell you what dearie, when you have learned about the different models for games we can chat again. Until then, I'll just laugh in polite embarrassment at your ignorance. You just lost the **** out of an argument, and all you can come up with is calling me ignorant. Different models for games? How many possible models can a FPS game possibly have? Do you even know what the **** you are on about? It's either F2P + RMT (which on consoles is a bad idea and it will never work, because console gamers are known cheap asses that buy a console specifically to get away from spending thousands of dollars on gaming computers). Or it's Buy for 60 dollars and play forever (which it won't be, apparently). So most likely it will be Buy and then RMT, which is TOTALLY ******* brain dead and doomed to fail financially. Don't try to talk about **** you have no clue of... Trying to beat an expert in his area of expertise (which for me happens to be gaming) is the most ******** thing you can do. But please, do go on and give me the pleasure of dismantling every hopelessly misinformed argument you throw at me... No, profanity is the last resort of an intelligent person that sees that making valid, logical arguments against morons is not enough, and feels the need to lower himself to their level to get the point across. You don't see me swearing at Ranger 1, do you? No, because so far, he's the most well spoken and non full of **** poster in this thread, compared to some of you other dudes. So where did I post in this thread exactly where I am full of ****? Since you are lumping me in with others of that ilk, you should have no problem directing me to a relevant post. Or was it just me pointing out that any real message or defensible position you might have had is rendered completely impotent by your profanity-laden rage?
I though that putting the word *some* in that sentence would spare me replies like these.
I am obviously not talking about you.

This is what I understood as well. Technically, it is a pretty impressive concept and, while I'd personally prefer a PC version, I can see that branching out into a complementary vehicle is a reasonable business decision. They have a potential market of what - 50 odd million customers? And Sony has shown the strongest Q2 growth in sales since release.
Conceptually though, the cross over between EVE and Dust is a damn fine idea. I'd love it if they could branch it out and include a RTS element that would layer inbetween the two and thus raking in another gaming genre.
At the end of the day; they are building the EVE Universe and creating all aspects of it. A bold move and one that I would expect from a company like CCP. They took the chance many years ago with EVE and look at where we are now; with a fairly solid MMO that has weathered a lot of storms. And when you compare their longevity against other MMO titles (Tabula Rasa, Age of Conan, Warhammer Online, etc.) you have to be impressed.
All in all, I'm fairly excited.

That's just not true. Do you know how much Harmonix Music Systems made selling tracks for Guitar Hero / Rock Band? A lot. A lot. NetFlix is doing all right on consoles. I pay for map packs for Halo (and those are free if you are patient... but I am not). Console players will very easily pay a small fortune for content they see value in. So when you say: "compared to some of you other dudes." The word "you" is not directly referring to me in a post directly quoting and responding to me?
So that would mean when you say "I am obviously not talking about you." You aren't really referring to me either, but some other people.

That's not what I read from several different sources at all...
Why don't they just sell the game for 60 dollars, and include a fixed amount of AUR in the game from the start?
No, seriously now, how does CCP plan on making any money from this game?

I seriously don't get CCP's business plan...
I'm imagining CCP as a dude on the street randomly throwing his freshly withdrawn salary around, for people to take it for free.
No logic whatsoever, but then again, CCP has proven to not have any ******* logic in their corporate plan time and time again, the events following Incarna are proof enough.
My my, I wonder how they still stay in business...
You should do a bit more reading. Have a glance at this page from a company that provides advice for investors in the gaming industry (Amongst other things). Take note of their comments on Sony and the success of the Fifa microtransaction system on consoles. If you do a bit more research you will find many companies discussing the high price point for entry into a console market, and how a lower price + microtransactions could increase the volume of users that take up the product initially.
Cheap asses?
It certainly does not seem that way from an objective analysis. |

There will be a RTS element in a limited way. The guy in the main ship overhead on each side will have an RTS style overview and be able to direct troop and equipment drops and (to a degree) movements on the field. Somewhat like an EVE FC.
It's an interesting concept, I wonder if there will be a queue of people waiting to join matches in that capacity.
Freezehunter, seriously, if you find sources that talk about a different pricing structure (as at this point in the game they could still change their minds about the pricing model) let us know.

Yeah, but think about how many people know about and play Guitar Hero, Halo, and then think about how many people simply know about Dust, let alone play...
I mean, FFS, Guitar Hero is basically a household name, EVERYONE knows about it, I've seen people play it at family reunions, kids playing it with their parents, etc...
Of course more people are going to buy stuff for GH and Halo.
Dust ain't no Halo or GH, if you know what I mean. Unfortunately, I have serious doubts it will ever be... Is it better to be a nice guy or an *******? You do realise that when those released nobody knew about them, right? Just checking, because your comments seem to suggest those games spontaneously came into being with massive volumes of players heralded by the trumpeting of angels. |

They "did" have one thing that CCP usually doesn't get into, really cool TV ads.
Although with Sony's influence at work, perhaps we WILL see that with DUST. I rather hope so.
That being said, there seems to be a huge amount of word of mouth interest in DUST on the gaming web sites, and that has value as well.

Fair point. I am expecting that Sony will have a reasonable marketing push behind this as well, as it is a unique new concept and being a market leader on this would be valuable for them. |

It was a long time ago when I read that, it was all over The Escapist and some other high profile gaming sites...
Also, sorry to say, but the same can be said for your link... Just because some blogger from a consulting company said that RMT games might be more profitable, doesn't mean that they are.
That system would never work and be profitable for a niche game like Dust... For football games, Wii games, and other super casual **** that everyone and their mother plays, yeah, sure... It's all in the numbers.

Use your Google Fu and find the link you are talking about, please. It would help to see some substance to the discussion from you instead of just allegations.

Thats scary what someone said about halos development team because I was thinking almost the same thing. Now this is 'Big gaming news' well before the release whats to stop all the big name FPS's just bolting on a quick persistance feature to there games and reselling as 'game mk+1'. I reckon it would be a lot quicker to develop the persistance aspect of the game than develop ground up as CCP have had to. They also wouldn't have to deal with all the intergration problems of PC's consoles working together ( only been done once AFAIK 'shadowrun' for xbox, and that was dire ) and Dust hasn't even entered Beta yet, we will see how many delays that brings. If CCP make 'persistant fps' the new buzzword then it won't be long before everyone is jumping on the bandwagon and proberbaly doing it better as 1. they are already far progressed in the development of there IP 2. They already have a full working FPS game 3. They are specialised to the market and commited and focused while CCP's interests are split.

True. But, those existing players (Company level) will need to deal with changing their models on their existing subscribers. I'm sure they'll be able to sell it; but it may cause a bit of push-back. The gaming public tends to be fickle when you change subscription / payment model midstream in an established product. With Dust they'll avoid that as their model is set upfront. |

Dunno Ai . MT isn't the dirty 2 letters it used to be as someone said FPSers are not adverse to buying map packs and such already also why would they neccesrily need to change there model the high value box seems to work fine and if combined with MT would be ultimatly more profitable than CCP's model.

Heh. Back in the early 80s I started on a Sharp PC1211. (I hope I remember the model number correctly, it's going back on 30 years now) You could enter a whack-a-mole type game on it. Does that qualify as a console?
Migrated to a VIC 20 (Tape driven), C-64, an original IBM 8086, Apple II GE and eventually into the more main stream PC market with a 80286. Remember the days of the DX4-100? My console experience is limited to a PS2 / PS3 / PSP and a XBox 360. I was never in the market for the original SNES / etc.
So many years of gaming. The joys of a misspent youth

MT isn't the dirty 2 letters it used to be as someone said FPSers are not adverse to buying map packs and such already also why would they neccesrily need to change there model the high value box seems to work fine and if combined with MT would be ultimatly more profitable than CCP's model.
True, true. It will be interesting to see how it pans out in the future. |
