Dust Base Put out this podcast interview a few weeks ago. It's a little old, but I keep coming back to it as it remains the only inspiring information I have heard this year. Just listening you can hear CCP Dropbear getting all excited over the game without being able to say anything: http://dust514base.blogspot.com/2011/12/vandv-podcast-episode-31-with-ccp.html
Personally I understand some of the reasons CCP chooses to keep things closed doors, but we're starting to see some of the problems that we saw with Incarna here. Yes, they're probably working to make sure that doesn't happen by releasing with full content and not giving false information, but we also got a problem of not being able to properly discuss anything with anybody asking about it. And they've already blown their deadline for the Beta trials this year. I'd love to see some more on the game, but more so, I want to hear about the mechanics and rollout plans. We got competition with other games out there; Don't want to see us get left behind in the dust...
As for the podcast, I'm curious as to what the community thinks about it. I enjoyed it immensly and wished more devs gave interviews in that table-talk fashion. |

Dust will be a one night stand for the PS 3, not a steady girlfriend. Is it better to be a nice guy or an *******? Tried being a nice guy, got shat on by all the assholes, became one. Tried being an *******, now everyone hates me. I am confused. How do you make people like you, when all they can see is text? |

I flicked through it, heard them pretend they didn't know that people wanting ship spinning, heard a joking insult at console owners, and stopped listening so that the slightly nauseous feeling caused by the thought that I give these people money wouldn't get any worse. I'm sure there was a thread at the top of the forum when the OP made this thread. Why does that matter? There's always a thread at the top of the forum :P |

As far as this goes, I'm not really going to give this much heat. As far as I'm concerned, if I lost 3 or 4 of my friends and co-workers from such whiny bitches as myself, I know I'd be bitter. I'm amazed that the 'dev remanent' has got as much energy and grace as they do. I'd give a few of their jabs some leeway...though there really wasn't much of anything in here.
As far as your two complaints: Ship Spinning was not a major feature, nor was it something that I imagine they thought would cause the outrage it did. With Console players being insulted...I mean I am more than impressed by your chivalrous nobility on the matter not to mention the natural disgust that seems to rise from your bowels when the righteous of the space land must wittness the oppressions of the poor console players. Let it never be seen that a console player makes jest of his fellow console brother.

And that's why it caused such an outrage, in a meta kind of way: people were highly annoyed that it was removed, but outraged at CCP's ignorance of the blindingly obvious fact that people would be highly annoyed by it.
It had only been one of the most repeated questions in the lead-up to the release and CCP's abject failure in picking up on this very clear message and not being able to imagine the self-evident just further underscored the complete breakdown in their ability to communicate and the vast distance they had created between themselves and the player base, which were among the primary causes of the summer rage. I don't like the fact that CCP had to sack people, but at the end of the day CCP provide a consumer service and they should expect people that are unhappy about the service to complain, and the whiners are actually doing CCP a favour. The whiners provide a valuable source of customer feed back by saying "we don't like this and if it doesn't change we will quit".
Because it is much, much worse for a service provider when people just think "bollox to this" and stop paying.

Ahh, very true. I agree with you that much of the emotion and the "whining" are both demanded by the CSM and CCP as a means of voicing the public opinion. It is important for feedback to be given those leading the community at large, lest they lose sight of who we are and where we are going. However, remaining true to the origin and definition of the Forum, there is also the well-known but soft spoken issue in the over-supply of community feedback. This is why we don't run a government or a business by a forum, it will **** the brain of even the most critical analyst and leave detail to the wind in favor of the larger favor or compromise.
This given, I ultimately prefer the Forum and accept the oversupply of wine, but it would be fantastic to get a little more cheese to go with it. It's depressing to have to wade through 10 pages of repeating complaints about ancillary agendas just to find that nugget of original topic you were looking for in the first place. Amen? |

This, this ... I debased myself pouring over cryptic C.S. Lewis tomes only to extrapolate in prose with his words the FOLLY of CCP during that time.

Unfortunately lots of developers seem to ignore well reasoned and politely written feedback, they only seem to pay attention when the dissatisfied customers have degenerated into a frenzied mob. Even then some ignore it until it either starts making stories in the gaming press or it begins to give the accountants cause to worry.
CCP ignoring the players over ship spinning was a classic case of a developer sticking their fingers in their ears and going "lalalalala". Once it was announced that we would be getting captains quarters and that they would be a mandatory replacement for the hanger players told CCP that they didn't like it. At first the players asked CCP not to do it, then as the roll-out date got closer people begged CCP not to do it, in the last few days before the release people demanded that CCP change their plans. CCP ignored everyone and the only compromise was a low res picture of a door and that was only because performance issues meant some people physically couldn't load the CQ.
Eventually the loss of the hanger was one of the issues behind the angry rampaging, rioting and shiptoasting mob. If CCP had made the CQ optional from the start players who raged might just have simply turned the CQ off and used the hanger and ignored it, it might just have saved a lot of anger. The CQ being shoved into peoples faces was a constant reminder to the issues that made them angry and acted like a wet trout round the chops and gave the impression that CCP where doing it on purpose to ram the NeX store down everyone's throat. |
