Hi,
In light of the recent loss of Ashurman, and the John Bellicose memorial, I started to think about what we could do inside EVE to permanently remember our lost friends. We're always generating a great vigil when someone passes away in real life, but after that we have nothing tangible that reminds us.
In order to change this, I want to propose a permanent memorial object to be placed in the New Eden system which houses the EVE Gate. Why specifically this location?
Lorewise, the New Eden system was the cradle of our EVE universe. It was the starting point for the great adventure which we have embarked upon and marks the first time that we occupy what we call New Eden. By placing a monument in this system, we can show that humanity is the cornerstone of our civilization and no matter how much we fight, we are all humans that want to make a difference.
I would ask CCP to see if it is possible to have a permanent, indestructible monument in this system which would allow us to hold both a pilgrimage to the system, and if we hold a vigil that we can light cyno's from the home of our fallen comrades to lead them to the EVE monument and be remembered in a fitting manner.
I am hoping people would be willing to support this, if you have any suggestions please post them.
( I've also posted this to Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/Eve/comments/4hmyca/idea_a_permanent_memorial_for_our_lost_friends/ )
All my posts are on my personal title and should not be confused as me speaking for anyone else.

CCP Falcon wrote:This is actually something that I've been discussing for a while with both our dev and art team, and most recently I chatted with CCP Jorg, our Art Director about it.
I'm fully aware of how important paying respects for lost pilots is, I've been through that myself with a corp member who passed away when I was a player running my own corporation. It's incredibly painful and on a personal note I'd like there to be a single focal point in New Eden where pilots can go to pay their respects.
The idea that I pitched to our art team at the start of this year was a memorial site that acts as "The Tomb Of The Unknown Capsuleer", basically a monument in space that would be player designed, would have a deadspace area with decoration around it, and that would have a permanent honor guard of:
2x Marshal
2x Apocalypse Imperial Issue
2x Raven State Issue
2x Megathron Federate Issue
2x Tempest Fleet Issue
Obviously it's something that still needs a little more discussion, and scoping of the bandwidth that's needed, but it's certainly something that we'd like to do.
How would you guys feel about something like this being in space?

I like the idea but a twist on other kinds of modern memorials comes to mind...
All the Empires set aside ONE centralish, HiSec, star system with no planets as a Capsuleer Memorial. Only unarmed ships allowed to pass the stargate to enter the system.
All the accounts operated by the deceased player have their capsules put in permanent orbit around the star in the system. All orbiting the same direction the orbit speeds proper for their orbit distance. A single station will orbit at the distant perimeter of the of the furthest out capsuleer so you can warp to the station. You would not be allowed to warp to the star.
The station would have a lookup you could engage and it would 'target' the appropriate capsule for you so you could see where it was orbiting.
I think just the sheer view of all those black capsules in planar orbit would be sobering. The memorial would grow over time and be a very strong reminder of how transient life really is.
Another contrast would be to have all their 'owned' ships with their names and kill marks visible on them orbiting the star even further out, decked out in stark white, all lights and windows dark.

Seriously, not to be cold-hearted about this, since dying is a part of living, this is something everyone who's ever played EVE is going to do - die. May be sooner. May be later. But, it is the only certainty in life (other than rent and taxes.) You may as well put up a memorial commemorating everyone who's ever played. 'Cause, that is where this is all headed, like it or not.
I know some people play with good friends. It's always hard to lose someone close to you. But, in the same vein, it happens all the time. It happens every day. It happened several times while I typed this response. That's the poignancy of living. However, I will never expect you to mourn, or even appreciate why those I'm close to mean so much to me. I would appreciate not being expected to make that leap for others.
TYVM Have a nice day!
PS Oh. And, keep your Reddit links to yourself. This is the EVE forum, not the "Find the Boston Marathon Bomber fiasco headquarters."

Like Funerals, Memorials are not for the dead, they are for the living in two ways. First, so you can believe that after you die, something will mark your time here. Second, for those that remember you, that want to remember you, have a place to gather and do so.
If neither of those things is appealing to you, perhaps there should be a mechanism to check a box to exclude you from being part of any memorial request. Lots of players will have passed on without CCP knowing a thing about it. Being added to the memorial would require someone alive to recommend your accounts to be added.

Quickly becoming, "How convoluted can we get?" After millennia of dealing with this consequence of life, I'd settle for the traditional response and respect. Some things the new generation with its teeming gray cells just aren't going to improve upon.
Try as you might.

Lets keep RL out of the game, I think it's a silly idea that just shouldn't happen. What's next, make a memorial for all the video cards we got rid of over the years? |

1.8 people die every second. Several people will die by the time I finish typing this post. There's nothing special about it and nobody who didn't know the person cares. If you want to make a memorial yourself I'm all for it, but it's not something development resources should be wasted on. My Shadowbane guild had our tree of life named "In memory of Rulien." as a memorial to a member who died. Name a citadel or something after your dead friend. It's a personal matter, not a public one. It does nothing for the 99.9% of the player base who didn't know any dead Eve players. Not to mention that real life doesn't belong in the game. |

I don't understand how this can even be suggested. Capsuleers are immortal demigods. If someone dies they were clearly a sham and just pretending to be a capsuleer. You kill millions of non capsuleers a day most likely, why memorialize any specific one?

Not that I wanna compare my friends to video cards but I do agree with the gist of this post: this is a game, leave RL out of it. And capsuleers can still die. Ask CCP Falcon.

I'm gonna have to say bad idea. I'm assuming most players don't play eve with loved ones so what's the point? I'll say a pray for them and their family but please keep depressive real life stuff out of my internet spaceship game.

In all honesty, I truly believe that having a memorial ingame is wonderful, even tho one in Molea can be used as a pattern set up a permanent one and it was suggested to set it up in the system where the Evegate is. I truly believe yes it does involve the pilot from RL, who may have friends here ingame that this would be a source of comfort and remembrance.
I can understand people wanting to keep real life out of game, BUT I think if we can look beyond that point and even realize that we are after all, a big family here and we draw ties with our corpmates and alliances in ways never understood.
Despite all of our differences, I support this 100%, R.I.P Our Fallen Comrades, fly in the stars of this great universe. 07. |
