Here is a megathread that will hopefully become a megathread with all of the things from the trailers that lured you here, only to greet you with disappointment. Seeing as I'm the OP (obviously, duh), I'll start first. Continue adding said disappointments to this list.
Null-security space - expectation
A scary, lawless place for the meanest, leanest players out there! Danger lurks in every corner here, and massive, thousand-man fleets clash in epic battles and skirmishes that resketch the borders of player-owned empires!
Reality - although thousand-man fleet battles do happen, null is a stagnant, boring part of space. Only key entry systems are ever camped by pirates, the rest being filled with small mining barge flocks that fuel the massive industrial machine of New Eden. Wars take place under the strategy of a cold war between a few power blocs and minor border skirmishes.

Back in days there was alliance called Foundati0n.
It kicked ass.
Oh those days and nights that we spent on defending the pipes and NDQ. Veritas Immortalis at nextdoor in MM. Constant small skirmish going on.
Eventually Foundati0n kicked even more ass and took over the region. The most poorest region of all - GW. By some reason that I do not remember, Red Alliance was pissed off and came into MM.
We kicked their ass in one of the largest capital fights at that era.
Yes. That was 0.0 at it's best.
Did I say kick ass?

Real Life Science Fiction - Expectation
I've always read about Eve Online, about it's economy, about the races, and the ships, and the technology that humans got from the Jovians, (are they aliens?) I am nerdy enough to actually buy a little journal to keep all my lore questions, notes, answers and thoughts. Asking myself if Jovians were aliens is pretty silly now when I look back but it was that wonder that got me here.
Then I finally decided to enter this cold universe and I spent a ton of time on the design of my character, and her name; I couldn't wait to immerse myself!

Exploration - Expectation: Venturing into a C2 wormhole filled with 20+ sigs whilst polishing your trusty Relic Analyser gleefully.
Reality: 30 minutes later chasing signatures around the map like a rabid Racoon; you request psychiatric remapping after finding 6 other wormholes, 9 gas sites, 2 sleeper data sites, 2 sleeper relic sites and a single pirate data site with barely enough loot to cover the cost of your sister's probes.

Wormholes are a thing, OP is an incompetent, directionless nerd. You want null to be a barracuda battlefield? Make it happen! Expectations are for shoppers and for that reason punk bands used to love undercutting them. Shoppers give up rights and responsibility in exchange for choice. I was brought here by the show info jpg of an incursus and a post on 4chan saying "Anti-pirate in Placid." Knowledge kills the flame of curiosity. I'm sorry i can't be more help in your complaint thread.

Sorry, I can't help this thread.
Expectations:
I came in with no expectations as I knew almost nothing about the game. A friend pointed me to it and so I signed up for two weeks.
Reality:
Crazy as heck game that has had it's mind blowing moments. Nowhere near perfect and it's flaws are sometimes awesome, sometimes hair losing... or maybe that's Ralph's nanite paste at work. By the way, that paste is expensive as all heck...
Be Positive GÇó Change yourself first, New Eden will come later GÇó EVE is Awesome GÇó CCP isn't the enemy GÇó Players are people too GÇó Where're the clothing blueprints GÇó Yeah, I'm still learning this game

Expectation: PVP is really hard
Reality: orbit FC, follow broadcasts, blame FC when you die and demand immediate SRP (tell them they are bad too) Also badpost on forums during fleet and tell them their mic is broken if you don't hear an order
Expectation: I will be safe in my solowtfpwnbbqshipofdoom, spend years grinding nerdtastically into a super
Reality: die in Aridia trying to log in after a break
Knowing they have more SP than I do isnGÇÖt going to stop me from taking the fight if I was going to take it.

Expectations from the trailer would probably not fail so hard if starter corps had no corp channel. That's where the poison seeps in. Rookie pilots only get rookie help and a recruitment channel. Over time you see less 5day old miners getting burnt out.
But really I expect new players think they're playing some kind of simulation where you need a joystick. EVE is pretty hands off tbh.

So true. Like every game it has it's ups, downs, flaws chin dribbling retards and even controversy but there's simply so much to do in Eve it would be hard to get bored of if you're an adventurous soul. Plus Eve is always changing and evolving with something new waiting not so far ahead; this is why Eve will continue to be popular.

Continue the list! adding on to what you said
Low sec - Expectation
A semi-lawless area of space for 1 v 1 and small group fights. bit like the wild west with a bit of danger day to day. but safer than null
Reality - where you find most PvPers and large groups. not to mention gate camps. not anything like the wild west. more like no mans land in a trench war. (its ironic, but Null sec is safer to live in than low sec. like ALOT safer)
High Sec - Expectation
Law enforced space with the occasional suicidal ganker, or the very rare war enemy chasing you.
Reality - God help you if your not in a NPC corp. going near Jita will land you 3-6 war decs for no reason other than making PvP legal in high sec. Major Trade Hubs are so majorly swarmed by these War spammers that you need to use a NPC corp alt to get in and out of the trade hub.
and these war decs are continually renewed (my 1 person corp alt is a ratter 6 jumps from jita. she went to jita once to drop off the rat loot. and got 4 war decs. 3 months later, 2 of those war decs are still being renewed. despite the fact she hasn't left her home system since the war decs were first declared. and wasn't even online for 2 of those months.
