Im confused of the diffrence between a deep mining beam vs a strip mining beam as well as mining crystals. Could someone give me a quick walk threw?

3 different types of mining lasers:
first ones are the standard ones: Basic Miner (lowest yeild) Miner I Miner II (highest yield)
All these can be fitted to any ship, and the different types give differing yields. You can get named Miner Is which give a higher yield than the miner I, but less than the miner II. EG Dual Diode Mining Laser I
Second type: Deep Core miner These are used for mining Mercoxit, which is found in 0.0 regions and yields morphite, which is used for producing tech II items and ships
Third type
Strip miners These are used on mining barges, and have very high CPU usage, the mining barges have a massive reduction to CPU usage of them so they can fit them
Small barge can fit 1, medium can fit 2, and the large barge can fit 3
The tech Ii Strip miners can be fitted with specific ore crystals to further increase the yield
These can only be used mine normal asteroids (not mercoxit, or ice)
4th type: Ice Harvester
These can only be used to mine ice, which is found in all security space, Ice products are used to fuel POS, and capital ships
Thats them all i think

Actually mining lasers need turret slot. Strip miners need just hi slot, but due their enormous fitting reguirements they can be mounted on mining barges or exumers. There is also deep core strip miner and it is used only for meroxit mining as it turret version.

Small addition, the Modulated Deep Core Miner 2(MDCM) can also be used effectively as a turret based mining laser for ordinary asteroids. It's the only turret mounted mining laser that can be enhanced with mining crystals.
EDIT: To answer the question of mining crystals. These are a way to customize your laser to become super effective at mining one specific type of ore. Crystals gradually wear out, but while installed, they greatly enhance the yield for that ore type. They are installed the same way as charges/ammo. In order to use them, you need a form of modulated mining laser (MDCM, Modulated strip miner, modulated deep core strip miner - Do NOT use this one for ordinary ores, it is less efficient), and some industrial skills related to refiningthat particular ore. The skill requirements for ores only found in low security space ramp up significantly compared to high security ores (up to Omber and Kernite). |
