Hey guys,
If I have two incoming routs of the same product, say...
Base Metals, Incoming, 1000 Base Metals, Incoming, 1000
And then I create routes to two processors to make reactive metals
Do I need to actually separately route those two incoming routes, when I click on them to create an outgoing route to the processor? I assumed that if I routed the top one to both places, it didn't really matter, since it would be routing X amount of Base Metals. Or is that doing it wrong?
I've been doing some PI chains and I have more of certain elements than I would expect in some places and trying to figure out how that is happening. |

Check the routes for your processors - if they all have incoming routes your method is working. I tend to route stuff individually, which I know works, but I don't know if that is necessary. |

What you want to do is the following: route everything to/from storage (launchpad, storage) hence:
Extractor1 -> storage Extractor2 -> storage ...
Storage -> Basic1 -> storage Storage -> Basic2 -> storage ...
Storage -> Advanced1 -> storage ...

Beware that you can lose material, or have reduced production because of idle processors, if you don't do what Tipa Riot indicated.
The reason being you can't guarantee the order that PI facilities cycle. Facilities are independent.
All routes should always either being at some sort of storage or end at storage.
Storage can be: command center, spaceport, or storage facility. I tend to use spaceports, as they are large enough for 3-4 day cycles. |

Oh I am indeed using storage exactly as mentioned.
I just wanted to make sure I didn't need to route the two separate incoming materials to my processors separately. Like, it doesn't actually matter which of the two of the same incoming from two processors I select when creating an outgoing to my advance processors, right? Once they go into the shared pool of storage, its all the same?
To clarify, I have 2 different basic processors doing the same material, say Proteins, so on my storage routes I have
Proteins, Incoming Proteins, Incoming
When I go to route proteins to my two advanced processors, I can click the top incoming route, then click create route, and route to the first advanced processor, and then click the top protein incoming route again, and click create route, and click the second processor, right? Like the incoming and outgoing routes are actually independant, since its all going to one shared storage? |

Correct. The interface suggests differently because each route's amount is listed separately, but this does not matter, the routes are just transporting stuff from A->B. ...and nice pick of product.

Well .... with my recent planet setup I encounter a problem ... there is the paradigm to route everything from/to a storage, but here is what happens (not on the other identical setup):
2x BIF -> storage -> 2x AIF
The BIF produce almost exactly the requested amount in 30min cycle (the other side has 4 BIFs, so there is no bottleneck), hence after 1h both AIFs should run smoothly ... but this did not happen. The first 40 output went to only on AIF, which started producing. OK. The second 40 went again as resource to the first AIF and the second is still starving. After the first 1h AIF cycle completed, the next 40 form the BIFs again went into the first AIF (as spare material for next run) ...
The routing is ok and my other identical setup planet runs perfectly in sync. So it seems there is a random element in the material distribution (or some order DOES matter?)??
Would there be a problem (of material loss) when routing BIF output directly to AIFs without storage in between?

There can be. If you route directly without storage in the middle.
For example, if you set up to route from BIF to AIF directly and the AIF is full with the BIF cycle finishes that product will be lost.
So if your AIF stalls when you run short of product A, product B will be full and each hour the new incoming will be lost.
As for the problem you describe, I have also seen it from time to time. PI however, is not something I try to squeeze maximum efficiency from. Last time I tried it drove me so crazy I needed a year long break to recover. |

As I started PI only a couple of weeks back I'm not bored yet optimizing . In the beginning I used a pure factory approach for special purpose but this is to effortful, now I'm looking for setups which require hauling not more than once a week.

each extractor AND processor to storage/Launchpad then back out to the next processor. bottlenecks don't matter as long as your routed to storage after each stage!
remember each stage takes less storage space, extractor (3000 units 120m3 per product) > BIF 15m3( 30m3 per p2) > AIF 7.5m3 (30m3 per p3) until p3 (18m3/152-238m3 for p4) & p4 (100m3). |
