First of all let me preface this suggestion by saying that it's for new players and those who are not already living out in low/null sec space, I appreciate that what I am about to suggest may seem a waste of time to people like you but I assure you that from a new player's perspective it would help a lot, so this is for us not you, thats not to say you cant join in if you like the idea tho.
Second thing I would like to add is that while I have game time under my belt I still consider myself a new player, I have near zero experience in PvP,PI,Wormholes,Faction Warfare and have a little bit of time spent in mining and missions so yeah I'm defiantly still in that new player group.
Ok onto the idea.
When a new player start's they used to flow through a tutorial which was fine but admittedly people lost interest really quickly, personally I believe that part of the problem is the wall of text players needed to smash through, something the new system helps with, the other issue I think is that players come to EvE because they hear all the cool stories about war and yet when they start to play they quickly realize just how far off it is before they can even think about getting into PvP, and for a lot of PvP player that is an instant turn off.
So my idea will try and address that lack of combat for new players by giving them a place and a new ship to use to get into PvP against other players in a meaningful way that will help them get used to combat as well as making them feel like they are helping their faction and making a difference.
Novus System - Wormhole space (perm hole found in each factions hub system) [ Only Shuttles Allowed to Enter ]
- Planet - Novus Prime
- Asteroid Belt I,II,III,IIII
- Faction Battle Stations (1 per faction at the exit point for the faction hole)
These would be located near the entry point to the system, so for example an Amar pilot coming into the system would see the station in front of them to dock into, A cal pilot would be on the other side of the system and see their station. These stations would be a refit & Supply / spawn point for pilots who need to tweak their ships or respawn.
These stations would give the players a Free Combat Ship, small like a shuttle but with 2 guns or 2 missiles, more on these ships later.
The Basic's of the Scenario.
The Ships So as a new pilot with no money no ships and still wanting to blow something up they would be directed toward the Novus system, on entering and docking with the main space station for their faction(Citidel?) they would open the market and see that they can buy 1 of 3 ships for free, or something stupid like 1 isk, These ships would be shuttle sized and only usable in system, one ship would be a Fighter, Another a Bomber or Missile , and another would be a miner / hauler.
The Objective In the middle of the system at a central point between all faction, each faction has a Control Structure in the process of being built, the vital materials needed are found exclusively in the Asteroid fields of which there are 4, Players need to mine the asteroids, haul the ore to the faction station process it into minerals and then haul these minerals to the capture point, on delivery of these minerals to the capture point their station build process advances.
Once a single faction has built their station, all faction pilots within range of the wormhole( read in the region its found ) gain a passive bonus to something useful, could be a little extra skill training time for new players, could be a little extra damage or shields something that will help the new players out without being stupidly op, but still worth doing.
With a system like this in place new players who have only an hour or less under their belt would be able to very quickly get into proper combat with other players, allowing them to experience just a little of what the game is like for those out in null sec or low sec space, since it touches on combat, mining and hauling it will help give new players a good grounding on how to do each of these activities, and everything they learn in here would translate out into the wider systems.
The Bigger Picture The mechanics and system set out above would essentially be for new players only, however the idea behind it could easily slot into the wider faction warfare that already happens , with a few changes, for example a similar wormhole to a similar system but from Low Sec would allow players to go into the system in their own ships as long as their small enough, which would allow the system to rull out the capitals or other super larger ships.
The Station in system would still be used to re-fit and re-supply but only ships the player brings in would be on offer, other than that all other systems mechanics would remain the same, players would mine and process the ore, haul it out to the capture point and fill up the needed materials to build their thing and on doing so gain the Region the wormhole is in a bonus, since the ships being lost this time are real the bonus should be better.
And then again same system but out in null sec and this time allowing everything into the system and again the bonus should be better and effect all faction players in null sec?
Overview I think the most important aspect of this system is the Novus system the area designed for new players to benefit them and teach them basic pvp and combat mining and hauling without much risk to their wallets or ships, once they are comfortable in battle it will be a lot easier for them to come to grips with the loss of a ship on the outside.
So that's the idea basically 3 different wormhole system's that players can enter and fight over that are faction v faction and that on winning yield small passive bonuses to the players of the winning faction.
