Too bad about DAOC going south... that was a very fun game to play. Not without its flaws, but I had a heck of a time with both the PVE and PVP sides of the game.

The only type of MMO that would ever come along and challenge EVE, other than the WoD MMO which doesn't count, would be a properly made Fallout MMO.
A properly made Fallout MMO would rock so hard that WoW would crumble before it, but to truly make it well, whoever makes it would have to get Black Isle together again to make i t. Nobody made PC RPGs like Black Isle.

I played DAoC for a year and a half or so. Towards the end the subscriber slide had already started, and the server I was playing on (Guinevere) got clustered with an existing cluster (Percimue). Even then, peak population was lower than Guin on its own had had.
I just ended up sitting in a keep with my bot waiting for the nightly mid PvE zerg and farming them a bit. Did that for a while since my guild was already dead and nobody groups relative unknowns. The fun went out of it so I gave it up.
The last DAoC entry on mmochart was from nearly a year ago now. No doubt EA/Mythic wouldn't want to release more current numbers, but I doubt they're at 100k now. Just looking at the current players info on the Camelot Herald shows that across all servers in both the US and EU servers it's down to 20k peak per day. Most of those playing still are just waiting for Warhammer or Conan anyway. Once that comes out DAoC is dead.
Pity, but hey, things change.

EVE and WoW cater to completely different people. I love it how in EVE I can take my newbie mate who's on a trial with me mining and provided I got a nice, big ship with big guns to nuke all the rats and look after them. :)
EVE has in fact, very little to do with "what level" you're at. And the open ended-ness of the game is great. I still play City of Heroes, but the only goal in that is to smash bad guys and collect salvage to strengthen your character and supergroup. In EVE I can do anything and everything I want. Which makes it very daunting for new players, but exactly what I want.
Also, EVE has perhaps the most active playerbase out of any game, in say, CoH or even WoW. You're going to be lucky to get 10% of subscribers online, EVE regularly beats that percentage.

Originally by: kieron As for subscriptions, we broke 160k accounts a few nights ago
To call this in to question, the 160k barrier was mentioned some months ago, was it not?
Originally by: kieron There was a slight dip resulting from the release of WoW's expansion, but the subscription numbers are back on the rise.
I find this implausible, eve's subscription rating (placed in hold) in relation to world of warcrafts released expansion, many comments and opinions iv'e seen posted on the former seem to suggest there established playerbase were more then happy to embrace the product, non to mention increased subscriber rates four fold over eve's entire subscriber base on the sheer back of that expansion.
Comments on the later statement of eve's increased subscriber rates. The opinion 'i' hold is in the most part to secure rmt trading via the new accounting options from isk selling through time codes purchased through third part transactions... it simply gives the hesitant before user incentive to start over new accounts (you would class as a new subsciber) given new secure option. I agree ofc that eve does indeed gain new subscribers (new paying customers), i think it not a fair reflection, given those inferences made.
Agreement ofc on the outdated mmogchart, but again in question of just how accurate those figures might be in a true reflection of given opinions and innuendos relating.
